Hi all of experten of Fw190a I have read some Post about how to fly Fw190.Many of you refered to using Manual PP on fw190a .I wonder how much difference on the performance that plane can get between by using MPP and Auto PP ? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I dont flew the 190 often, so with the Bf109E I found it easier to fly just by "ear" and adjust accordingly ... can have a nice boost, but thats hard to measure. In dogfight it helps to stay above enemy, getting some extra rotations in climbs .. just watch the temperature, cool engine down before the next climb.

the 190d model was for hi-alt performance and did not have a radial engine (had an inline ME Daimler Benz), thats why you will fry it like in the 109. The 190s with the radials are difficult fry.

I always fry my engine when I use manual prop pitch in any German fighters.

Not in this game.
Tank wanted that but he never got the DB. Well he got the 603 but too late. Only few D series had DB 603 engine. Most had Jumo engine.

a DB engine 190 would be amazing .. in every case i have read of a DB/merlin swap (109,hurri,spitfire)the DB engine gave a substantial improvement


as for manual pitch .. the only advantage I have seen is you can over rev the engine for short periods in a long tail chase or when climbing to get a few extra kph but as stated above you are more likely to cook the engine .. you would also need to be a numbers man and do quite a bit of testing to get it right

FW-190D models will over-rev somewhat, but have you ever tried a 109?

The danger in the Dora is over-reving while diving. Whatever you do, don't try to dive in the Dora at high prop-pitch. In fact, I know some of the better Dora pilots on-line, don't ever come out of Auto.

In the Anton, if you are not using manual prop-pitch for everything other than diving, then you are seriously losing speed, acceleration and only getting a portion of the performance. The BMW 801 radials in the Antons are very robust, and can take quite a bit of abuse.

I have prop-pitch mapped to a rotary pot (dial) on my Cougar Throttle. If you have a Saitek, X-45 you probably ought to have it mapped to rotary on the throttle. Your auto/manual switch setting should be somewhere around that rotary for ease of access.

I assume you've seen those posts, as you referred to manual prop pitch dicussed in previous posts. Just in case, (and for others who might run across this) I posted the link, here.

If you'll go back over my posts you'll see that I refer to an FW-190 Operating Guide written by Knighton "ManyScalps" Warbeck, which is available over at the Jagdverband 44 (JV 44) Squad's Website. The actual link is:

This, I believe is the finest thing out there for the FW-190A9, and is applicable to the A8 also. You can apply all the CEM settings that you find in this manual to all Anton's. I have. Some of the comments, particularly on high speed turning do not apply to A6 and below because they do not have the same wing as the later Antons. I would highly recommend that you use the techniques described in this manual. They helped me enormously.

The improvement from using manual vs auto propeller pitch, is complex and relative to which area of performance your thinking about and which alititude regime you're operating in.

Sometimes, the gain may seem very minor, for example in some versions of the Anton, 100% propeller pitch only yields about 7 to 8 kmh improvement in top speed over Auto.

However, in terms of climb and acceleration, my perception of the improvement is on the order of 5-10%, as evidenced by my experience when using manual PP to regain altitude after a dive, and by shortened time-to-climb to my operating altitudes. Depending on how you fly, where you fly (online-offline), what types of missions your conducting (Air-to-Air/Air-to-Ground) this may not be significant enough for you to go to the trouble.

I fly almost exclusively online, sometimes in competitions against some of the very best pilots in the sim. I need every tiny bit of performance I can get, even if it's only a few percent for a short while. You'll find in tight situations, a little bit of improvement goes a long way.

I'd say that the greatest improvment is in terms of regaining altitude after a Boom attack. On the way back up to the altitude you started your attack at, you can regain most of it (providing you started with a cool engine) by closing the radiator, and using 90-100% prop pitch until you can't climb anymore.

Altitude is life against an adversary that pushes their plane to the limit. If you are running around at 1.5 Km to 3 Km of altitude most of the time, you are'nt pushing the plane like I do. And that's ok, if you're coming back home in one piece.

I use man prop pitch to help keep myself airborne, at competitive speed when higher than 8.5 Km. Sometimes I fly as high as 10,500 when facing well flown P-47's and P-51's. This is'nt the optimum performance envelope for the FW-190A, but it will hang in up there, if you use a high degree of elevator trim, and have a steady hand (and feet). I don't know how I'd stay up that high for protracted periods without the use of 90-100% prop pitch occasionally to help "pull my nose up" when manuvering, or to regain my speed.

I hope I've answered your questions. I don't have exact metrics on all facets of Complex Engine Management, but I don't need them. I know I'm getting gain for my trouble and I need all the performance I can get, no matter how small.
