The Halifax Herald Limited

"MELANSON, JerryMELANSON, Jerry - 47, Grosses Coques, died August 25, 2005. Born in Digby, he was a son of Dorothy (Dugas) Melanson, Grosses Coques, and the late Albert Melanson. He worked for the sea and he lived for the sea. He is survived by his wife, Dale Melanson, Grosses Coques; sons, Paul, Michael; brothers, Jimmy, Meteghan River; Michael, Portland, Me.; Freddy, Grosses Coques; twin brother, Gary, Grosses Coques; sisters, Mrs. June Belliveau, St. Bernard; Mrs. Joan Boudreau, Prince Edward Island; Jane Melanson, Grosses Coques. He will also be sadly missed by Lexi, MaCenzie and Minoux."

I just felt like posting this because Jerry was a good friend. I worked with Gary and Jerry on their boat years ago. We worked hard and were a good team. We stayed many days at sea together and survived many unforgiving storms on the Atlantic in our 45' wooden sanctuary of life.

The three of us spent a lot of time together on land also, beer, jokes, billiards, jokes, r/c airplanes, jokes, computers, jokes, and always a good time.

I'm am quite sad now for the loss of a good friend and mate but more sad for Jerry's twin brother Gary. They were not indentical twins but were identical in nature. They were always together and always worked together. This will be very hard for Gary. They were always well respected in our villages.

For 5 years we've been living on opposite sides of the world. I've visited them a few times and had good times as always. Those few times are precious but IMHO too few, now more than ever.

Just wanted to say that if you have a buddy you haven't spoken to in a while, give him a call. You might not have the chance tomorrow. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Jerry is and will be missed by many.

Fritz

Thanx all, your posts really make a difference. It's the first time I've ever lost a close friend and I know it won't be the last. I'm pushing 40 now and recently had realized that these sort of losses will start happening. This is life.

Monsoon, you pointed out that you have never lost any close friends before and a few days ago I could have said the same about myself. Now I envy you. Really, you don't know what you got till it's gone.

Gary and Jerry have always been extremely competitive with each other but in a sportsmanship way. They did everything together and were good at everything they did. I always attributed this to their competitiveness.

One night we were at a local tavern after coming back from a successful 10 day fishing trip. I had just told Jerry of a practical joke I had seen. Immediately Jerry called Gary from the pool table to sit and take the bet. Jerry stood Gary's full package of cigarettes upright. He bet Gary 20 cents that he could pound his fist down onto the upright cigarette package and not break any, not even one cigarette.

For about 45 minutes they argued over the bet. Finally they agreed on 25 cents. Jerry stood up and pounded the cigarete package until it was totally demolished. Gary, with a stunned face took the wrecked package and started to pull it apart. Gary looked a Jerry and said "You fn ***hole, you broke all my smokes. Jerry smiled, gave him the 25 cents and apologized. "I guess you win the bet".(Cigarettes were $7.25 a pack at this time). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Both Jerry and I were laughing so hard we had tears. The look on Gary's face was priceless. The rest of the night, out of spite, Gary refused to buy more cigarettes and smoked only the broken butts. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Looking on the bright side, I got good memories.

I couldn't find an appropriate sailors goodbye so may he have red skies at night and full sails in the morning.

I forgot to mention one very important thing. Jerry died doing what he loved the most in the environment he loved the most. It was a diving accident.

S! Jerry, rest in peace.

and wish you feel well again soon, Fritz. Jerry would probably like to see a smile come out whenever he's remembered (or a grin http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

Very sad to hear that. Plus that I probably have relations with them even though I've never met his family... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
