The damage these aircraft took and made it home is unbeleivable. Maybe SOWBOB could model this kind of damagage. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Yes, it is interesting to see how much punishment a/c could (and still can) take and still make it back.

But keep in mind that for every a/c that returned with this type of battle damage, an X-number didn't with far less or even minor battle damage. The weakest part of the chain is the human factor.

A famous example I like to use is Robert S. Johnson, who made it back with his Thunderbolt after absorbing an incredible amount of damage, HOWEVER if you rely on his book he would have bailed after receiving his first dose of damage, not doing so ONLY because his canopy was stuck.

Many a/c were abandoned or ditched because the crew didn't have enough trust in their ship to get them back in one piece (flying being a hazardous business in the first place without air combat).

Also many perfectly flyable aircraft were lost because of damaged pilots. The aircraft being okay, but the pilot or aircrew being incapacitated.

You won't see pictures of a flyable B-17 having crashed because of dead pilots...

Think of that when looking at, in fact a limited number of very famous, damaged heavy bombers.

On the other hand, you can also say wheres the pictures of all the Betty's, Heinkel's, 88's, ect. that made it back with the same levels of battle damage. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Probably the most famous "Made it back" picture is this one of a B-17 from the 97th Bomb Group called the "All American". It suffered a collision with a German fighter and still made the 90 minute flight back home.
