Wow this one is a gem...a blast from the past as it were but improved with some of the new objects and effects. Just finished a mission outside Smolensk...got a Stuka but was shot down by a Me-109, bailed. Very well done groundbattle...makes for a potentially dangerous distraction. A previous mission was one fo those epic IL2 moments when my squadron mates were shot donw and I tried heading home but two 109s were dogging me... I guess tey were greedy, I'd turn back then try to go back on course. Got fed up and finally turned back to face them again but this time took the one in a thousand shot and got one of my persuers in a head one, hit his engine and he crashed. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Then managed to down the other one in a hail of green tracers til he lost control and crashed. Wow a real nail biter that one.

Looking forward to the rest and also part 2. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Thank you comrade. My goal was to have all you capitolists digesting your fingernails as i drank myself into a vodka based stupor.....

Ok, ill get out of character for a moment...Glad youre having fun. Its best to record a track of the misn and go back using manual view control to see whats going on in the ground battles. I was constantly surprised myself. The new patch also had a few slight changes. I just got track IR3 and am having a blast going back thru it with that thing, especially in smolensk misn7. Im hoping to make pt2 as epic, but its taking me a bit of time...only on misn 5 now of the new one.

Hey Enforcer, after you finish it can you 'merge' those two campaigns and make one campaign thru whole war eventually? Now that would be really awesome. Thanks for your work mate.

that is exactly what i intend to do, but i will have to finish pt3 before then. I guess i can call it VVS fighters gold. God knows when that will be, but it will probably be when chicks up north are wearing short skirts again. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I wholeheartedly agree with the above expressed opinion. Currently at mission 16 and really enjoying it.

I loved some of the ground battles I followed as advised in the briefings of the first missions. This is something I've never done before and I found it really entertaining to see the progress of the skirmishes and the impact my zveno was having on them. This was completely different aspect of the game I experienced for the first time.

Thank you Major.

Relax, Joe. Help is at hand. I shall lend you some of my hard-won expertise. Feel free to send money - it is no less than I deserve. This offer is available to all of you, so don't be shy. PM me for bank details.

Having played through this excellent campaign and tested the beta of Gaston's Spanish Civil War campaign I have put together the following comprehensive 14-step guide for combat in the I-16.(Also works for the Hurricane and CR-42)

1.Jink.
2.Jink a bit more.
3.Restart engine.
4*.See (3).
5*.Explosively detach outer section of wing(either is fine).
6*.Bail.
7*.Float serenely, enchanted by scenery, birds singing, etc.
8.Tuck and roll.
9.Release chute.
10.Run a bit.
11.Run a bit further.
12.Bend knees quickly then extend legs fully to propel self forwards horizontally into air.
13.Position arms in front of self to absorb impact.
14.Lay still, very still. 109s can detect movement.

Ref: V.V.S. S.O.P in W.W.II.

Note: Some optional steps have been omitted for the sake of brevity.

*Options for step 4.
Find happy place.

*Additions for step 5:
Opt.1. For best results apply Mk 108. MG 151 will suffice however.

*Additions to be inserted after step 5:
Opt.1. Roll violently in direction opposite to severed wing.
Opt.2. Plummet earthwards, bereft of life.
Opt.3. Plummet earthwards scoring fiery trail across the firmament to mark your passing.

*Optional steps for step 7.
7a)Hurtle earthwards in uncontrolled plunge.
7b)Upon reaching final destination spread self thinly over surrounding area.

I gotta find my keyster; it fell off while i was LMAO.

While the above advice is certainly accurate, I did the following...

1. Avoid fighters, except for the 110s. But be careful as they have alot of firepower and attack them from underneath, avoiding the gunners. Sometimes you cant aviod the 109s, but try to take a few squirts, and break away when the closest one is headed opposite your course. They cant turn around as quickly as you can, and you can use this to get away. IF still chased, bait them to your base, as there is always some AA down there....I used this many times to avoid destruction. Keep making passes over the field until they get enough damage to break off.

2. Avoid all negative G manuvers. When your engine does quit (it will), glide and try to restart. YOu may have to try several times, hitting the I key, but it will resume...eventually.

3. Use your wingman and flight. You must face the fact that sacrificing your flight is the only way to distract the luftwaffe buzzards long enough for you to gain the advantage or escape. Save your wingman for emergencies, but it is usually necessary to tell him to attack something since there are so many of them. He is the only guy i really tried to save alot, as he has ace status (usually).

4. When in a fight wiht 109s, NEVER get into lengthy chases....you wont catch em. If your not close enough to shoot effectively within 30 seconds of manuvering, break it off and choose another target or bug out!

5. You will do better against the emils right on the deck. I flew several into the ground.

6.Use your planes assets...manuverability is the primary one. You can turn inside anything. Also firepower;gunnery is very important. take short bursts from pretty close. Shorter ones from distance, though you 20mm does have some range. Dont waste ammo hosing at long range; if you havent hit'em with the first short burst,
you won't-see #4.

7. You will hve better luck wiht bombers, and can increase your survivability by ording your flight to attack fighters, though your mission objectives may suffer (The main objective is to survive, as was the case in the actual early war VVS). While making passes on bombers, dive away from the fighters and engage another bomber until you have to run for it.

8.like the song says..."sometimes you gotta fight when youre a man". As in misn #7, you may hve to hassle with the fihgters. See all the above, and keep in mind that fighters that are distracted by straffing target rich environments are easier to sneak up on , and they always return for more passes, so dont bother chasing em.

9.About all i can think of. Keep your head on a swivel or use F6 alot. Situational awareness is the main key. Easier said than done, like in the misn where you have to escort those TB-3s.

Rotsa Ruck....as they say in Shanghai. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Keep in mind that survivability was rare in the early days of the actual VVS. It may be better to bail sometimes if you are really shot up.

btw I just finished my VVS fighter campaign... by far the longest I ever played 318 missions!
On the very last mission (late april 1945) I was assigned to bomb some targets in Berlin suburbs, just when we (me and the rest of my ai LA-7 flight) saw Berlin in the distance I saw jet engine trails above us. Two ME-262s!
They promptly shot down all three of my squadmates and I barely escaped (they would probably get me too if flight of Yak-9s didn't arrived on the scene).

I looked at that mission properties and saw that was Walter Schuck in one of that ME-262s...!

Anyway I'm just happy I finally finished my VVS fighter campaign.

Will keep those in mind, and I do love these kind of missions, being Bruce Willis is boring.

Im a bit confused Kuna...which cmpn is that? mine only had 21 misns, and the original in Il2 is 70 misns. Which cmpn is it that has that many? is it a generated one? I didnt know those things were that varied...i never had much luck or fun with those. 318 misns sounds like an actual VVS career!

Oh, and payment isnt needed, as we are all good communists comrade, and such would be capitalist decadence.

Stock FB campaign VVS fighter (not Leningrad). From year 1941 'till the late april 1945 -- 318 missions.

By far the worst situations were when I was in I-16 early in the war. You can't do anything to defend yourself completely hopeless situation. Once I get LaGGs ... well those are dream compared to I-16.

I wish we could modify the stock generated misns in the FMB....id play the thing to give me something to work wiht and flesh it out a bit. Dunno when id have the time though. Today is the first chance ive had all week to work on VVS pt2....am just on misn 5. Sheeesh...the real war progressed faster than this.
