S!,
It is good news that Gibbage is now in charge of producing the spitfire V. We all know of Gibbage's dedication to IL2/FB community. A big salute Gibbage for getting permission to do the Spit V.

Anyhow, now on to something that may cause a lot of debate here. It's been documented, IIRC, that Cpt. Brown found the forward view of the Spitfire inferior to that of the fw190. I wonder how this will be reproduced since the FW190, in its current form, has perhaps the worst forward view of all the planes in FB?

I don't have the documents in front of me, but can anyone verify the Spitfire was reported to have a inferior frontal view compared to the fw190?

Did you see Fievel's update on his Spit? I think the Fw190 and Spitfire can shake hands in regards to forward visibility in this sim. Although both are geometricaly perfect, visibility from both of them is not realistic.

Taken from a report given after full trials were carried out on a captured Fw 190 A-3 at the Air Fighting Development Unit at Duxford, 1942.

"The view for search from the Fw 190 is the best that has yet been seen by this Unit. The cockpit hood is of moulded Plexiglass and offers an unrestricted view all round."

Views while Flying Low:
"The good all-round view from the aircraft, particularly over the nose, makes the Fw 190 very suitable for low flying and ground strafing."

And on the Gun sight View:
"The sighting view is approximately half a ring better than that from the Spitfire. The all-round search view is the best that has been seen from any aircraft flown by this Unit."

All the docs here, the 190A would eat the Mark V (if correctly modeled) for breakfast /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

"Fw-190A could beat the Spit V in every aspect of combat, except for turn ratio". Spitfire - The combat history, by Robert Jackson

One of my pet peeves!

Absolutely, positively agree with you on this score. IMO the problem exists with every aircraft cockpit modelled, due to the limitations of reproducing human binocular vision on a PC screen. The true obstruction of cockpit pillars and frames should probably be about one half of what is presently being calculated from a single geometric point of vision reference.

Search view relates to the all round visibility from the cockpit. Over the nose view in a Spitfire was restricted, absolutely. But was reported as better than a 109!!!! Oh dear, now there's a problem!

Re fighting a Spit V and a 190...it depends on the fight..If the 190 avoids a turnfight, it should win...if it tries to turn with the Spit in a low speed DF, it's toast.

All depends on tactics and pilot skill....as usual.

I can only imagine the coming Spitwhining, if they are going to model Spitfire gunsight more worse than FW-190 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
