View Full Version : Sick To Death Of "Fanboy" Label

Hi, all.

First off, nobody has ever directly called me this personally, but yet I feel it in the tone of posts that reply to mine once in awhile. I don't like it. I wouldn't have cared at one time, but now I do. The guys that invented it use it negatively, and as such, it is nothing but childish name-calling. I will be 45yo next month, and if my own children start calling names, they are disciplined for it.

I have enjoyed many hobbies over the years. Bowling, swimming, weight-lifting, flying a real plane, etc. But, at the moment, the only hobby that I have the time/money for is IL2/blabla/PF. If I or someone else wants to say something nice about something we enjoy, well, we shouldn't get called names for it. These discussion boards are provided to us as a way to help us to enjoy the game. Sometimes that may mean that a complaint or two is forthcoming, and I have no problem with that. But it seems to me that there are peeps here that never have a good thing to say, at all . . . ever.

I DO understand that a few "fanatical" fans are capable of saying things/doing things, that are couterproductive. Ok, straighten them out about it without calling them names, ok? Good intentions never sent anyone to Hell (in spite of the old adage).

I love this game. Its as close as I can come to flying one of these birds. I have purchased a system, then upgraded, then upgraded, then upgraded again. I have tweaked as many hours as I have flown, and I enjoy the tweaking sometimes as much as the flying, believe it or not. I love the developers that created this simulation. Oleg and 1C have proven over the last couple of years that they DO care about us, and about their creation. Oleg has chatted with us, flown with us, and answered personal emails fom everyone who has bothered to send them. That is UNHEARD OF in the world of game development.

Yes, I am a fan, and I am proud to have been a small part of something that has caused so much good, both as entertainment, and as an educational tool for myself and my children. I have met young people online who live in war-torn countries, and between the dogfights, have chatted with them about their plights. Result: a greater appreciation for my own country and a desire to do whatever I can to help others not fortunate enough to live in a peaceful world.

Yes I am a fan. But I don't appreciate the coined word: "Fanboy".

Sorry for the rant. I've just had enough.

I really don't get the whole thing but i think is the boy of fan"boy" who make this name negative?

Fan"MAN" would be more like it.

We are all "Fan men"
We are a minority in teh whole gaming market so lets stick together.

You get 'em Tsisqua! I guess I'm a fanboy, if were reduced to name-calling.

I didn't used to be. I recognized there were flaws in the game, but I enjoyed this one over the others I've tried. But I was completely unwilling to join in w/ what I thought were fanboys. I didn't ever 'thank' Mr. Maddox for the game or the support. I always thought that the price of the game was all I owed the developers. I always thought it was weird the way many members referred to Oleg as though he were a personal friend.

But then I started getting friendly w/ certain ppl who are closer to the development process than I was. I started to see for myself just how hard 1C works to support this game, and how much Oleg personally puts into it. I'm impressed over and over again w/ the quality of this game and the dedication of the ppl who develop it. I'm amazed that Oleg takes the time to post and respond to the members of the community. Now, I have a real and personal attachment to this game. In short... I'm a fanboy.

Thanks for putting that so eloquently Tsisqua!

After a few years of playing flightsims with absolutely zero support from the makers (@ something around $10 a month for arena entry) it was and still is really refreshing to discover & be part of a sim that is so well supported by its creators.

At 55 I can tell you I'm no boy (except maybe at the controls of a Spitfire http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) but I am, unashamedly, a fan of the guy and his team whose dedication has brought us the finest prop-sim ever to grace our monitors. I don't say that there haven't been snafu's - and there's no pleasing the rivet-counters - but Oleg Maddox & Co have always come up with the goods eventually. Hat's off to 'em!

Are there levels to fanboydom?

Like Fanboy First Class?....Fanboy Extrordinaire...Generalisimo Fanboy....Fanboy in Training?

The thing that bothers me about the conotation is that, when used, it's usually in the context of BLINDLY following Oleg....(or any other pertinant interest or subject)....that errors and mistakes are forgiven or blindly excused.

I've even seen the term coupled with the word psychophant...(SP)..... I'm not the most intelligent guy in the world but I can (as most here) distinguish the good from the bad about the sim...and I'm not led mindlessly into a lulled sence of complacensy.

We appreciate what we have.... and we respect the devlopement team for CONTINUING to support this small comunity of people.

I've heard many folks on here express there dislike for certain aspects of the game....Does that make them HATERS? No. Just people with opinions.

If I'm called a fanboy I consider the source, and just smile because I can get so much enjoyment from this game. To bad the person who uses the term derrogatively can't see past his problems and get the same excitememnt and enjoyment that MANY of us do. His loss.

Robert

Havent been called a 'fanboy' ever. Was called a brownnose a few times on a thread I started, basically stated that I was feed up with the patch whining(patch 2.02) and called the head of 1C. "Mr. Maddoxx" out of 'respect', and got called a brownnose by what Im sure was some stupid kid(s). Nonetheless... *looks around cautiously and whispers* Im a fanboy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

Once again, Tsisqua, your aim in spot-on. It's the spirit in which the user employs the term "fanboy" that lets you know it's meant to be derogatory. You can almost see the sneer. I feel the same way about the term "whiner" that's been used ad nauseum. If someone voices an opinion contrary to another's, they're termed a whiner. This puts you on par with some sniveling, tired child that doesn't know what he wants other than to complain in a whiney tone. While no doubt some posters are unreasonable or proffer the unsubtantiable, an honest difference of opinion is met with a "take no prisoners" attitude in which the counterstrike is to demean the merits of the opinion and denegrate the person offering it. I guess it's signs of the times when people have no tolerance for differing views and the small minded can only comeback with a put-down. Good post, my friend. With all its imperfections, I'm still a huge fan of this sim.

Even though I ignore the term, it is mildly irritating. I`m quite used to being called a fanboi (?). I even know most of the fanboy callers by name.

It usually appears when they post negatively about an IL2 topic, I pop in to correct them, then i`ll be instantly branded : FANBOY!

It1s also often their last resort (without getting banned) when they can`t think of anything else to say and just hate the fact that you like what they don`t and dare to say to say so publicly...

Dear Tsisqua,

your posts belong to the rare kind on this board (and even less common on the internet in general): they are well thought over and well written. They are also well weighted usually. Thus I just cannot understand why someone should call you a "fanboy" as in "following the Mighty Oleg blindly".

Being rather an opposite of a "fanboy", I can very well understand the arguments of those who support Oleg more than I do. I am less experienced and haven't seen many flight simulating games before, thus my expectations for the product are probably higher. But even a very young age and lack of experience does not allow for dissmissing the arguments from other community members - and calling names is just childish.

But so is getting offended by words http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

301 - 400 posts - fanboy first class

Hans, you are the kind of person that is typical . . . of the good thinkers who have argued sensibly, and won, for certain changes in the game over at ORR. Alot of times people misinterpret suggestions made as complaints. I did that at first. Admitedly, that wonderful group whom we have all identfied as "Luftwhiners" are largely responsible for the game being what it is now. Not everyone speaking negatively is whining, and I don't like "whiner" any more than I do "fanboy". However, when I first came here, I saw what seemed ridiculous complaints to me. I simply didn't understand that Oleg set up ORR just for that . . . to help with development of the game. When that finally sunk in, I understood a little better why I was able to enjoy such a beautiful thing on my home PC. Its not just Oleg, or even the entire 1C team . . . it has been all of us too.

And, yep, You are right . . . words shouldn't upset a person so. This has been a rough week. My aunt died, and that leaves myself and my brother as the last Cherokees of our clan from our immediate family. My dog died. My wife needed surgery. I've been pampering her for the last three days, and chasing the kids around so that they don't disturb Mom while she's resting. Yep, bad week. And seeing "fanboy" for the umpteenth million time finally set me off.

I meant all of it, though http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The third definition of 'Fanboy' says:
3. fanboy

1. A person who is completely loyal to a game or company reguardless of if they suck or not.
2. A pathetic insult often used by fanboys themselves to try and put down people who don't like whatever it is they like.
3. See fool or SEGA.

Can't let my buddy Tsisqua make a post like that and not compliment it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well said!

And add another 40 something (44) 'boy' to the fanboy cart, going to need some more horses!

I consider Fanboy to now be a compliment on this board http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Well, I've been here for a while, no where near as long as others... but longer than some and I've yet to meet someone here who I'd come even close to being a "fanboy".

If you want to see real fanboys go to a console forum or say something less than loving about HalfLife 2, then stand back you'll see some real ugly stuff then. This is nothing compared to those places...

Basically I like the folks here and have always been treated well here, well most of the time I do get flamed for asking noob questions. But I've yet to see any of the behavior hear that I've witnessed in other places.

hi all...

if a bunch of sim lovers aged over 40 can be called fanboys then call me a fanchild/baby whatever cuz at 19years i feel like one of the youngest on these forums...still think i wouldn't mind ppl saying i'm a fan, yet i'm also known to have 'whined' for a malta map in the past, yet its only cuz i know this game can deliver the very best to its community.

yes, i admire what was done by 1C and Maddox, and I'm sure more is to come in the future by this great development house. Luckily, I'll enter my 40s with a history of flying the best sims around http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hey Pete EXCELLENT post!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Does having an online meltdown/Chicken Little attack at the prospect of having the flow of "Forgotten Battles spice" interrupted qualify you as a fanboy?

I guess Im in...... LOL..... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

The other one that gets me even more is...... "Oleg worshipper" . That one really gets my goat.

Well, in the spirit of the season I'd even give RedDeath the benefit of the doubt on this. As we approach our "Golden Years" (or maybe are there already) it is true that most of our "friends" have "passed on to the other side". If what he was trying to say was just that "there sure are a lot of Old F*rts in here" he's got a point, though most of you still seem like "young whippersnappers" to me. Course, most everyone in here is at least a "good acquaintance" with all the time that's spent here if not a "new friend". And, on this thread at least, we all share an admiration for the dedication that Oleg and all the folks at 1:C have for their dream.
Time to chore.

In all honesty, I don't find that Red's post was all that bad. I expected much worse. Red, if you are out there, I forgive you, mate. Us old farts are just too far gone now to be all that offended by you.

Nice thing about being a teacher: I get a long Christmas break. My wife doesn't. I have to be here with my kids until they go back to school, so in a way I won't have much of a life for awhile, so I will be chatting here quite a bit. . . . in between: "Put That Down!", and "Don't do that!", and "Oh, shoot . . . ok, what do you want Dad to cook for ya?". So Red, if you are out there, I want you to know that if I were a mod, I wouldn't have used my banstick . . . at least at the moment there is a smattering of truth to what you said http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Of course, attacking a long thread probably isn't the best way to make friends. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

i have a dry sense of humor. it ties into the original post and another one relating to friends online vs real friends in the same thread.

evidently targ for whatever reason is trying to figure out fantasy reasons to ban me. although i truly have no idea why.

i guess supporting my military and being christian isnt enough now. now you have to be sickly sweet kissy kissy online? i dont know ive re read the rules over and over and still havent found an inkling of anything bannable in my post.

tsisquia you have a point like georgeo76, Crazy Ivan, GOZR, T.O.A.D. Bearcat and the "UBI Regulars" I hold a lot of respect for you folks that make the time to keep this community great. A long time ago time my eyes were open with optimism but tempered with pessimism. this being a public forum needs to look spit-shined and polished so it can attract business. My disapointment and frustration with UBI should not be confused any of you in which I hope you understand
I choose to keep quiet because things are best left unsaid, With this in mind I focus on flying and enjoying what I have.
Honestly, the game has a lot of flaws and someday they might be repaired. I distinguish the two and decide it's UBI's problem, not mine.
I paid less than $100 bucks for the whole series so It would be foolish to create noise-besides Oleg should know by now.
In the "real world" My neighbors, friends and co-workers know of IL2 and hopefully they might pick up a copy and give it a try? Who knows.

Happy Hollidays and enjoy.

Remember! -two weeks.

~S~ Dacripler!

Oh, how I wish that more folks were like you. I know that there are things that you are dissatisfied with, Mate. We all have our gripes, but you seem to be aware that nothing is perfect, and you are receiving enjoyment from IL2, in spite of its imperfections. You would be the perfect beta tester, and your input in Oleg's Ready Room forum would be a great help to the 1C team, really!

Not many folks live in a place called reality when they get near a computer sim . . . they seem to expect everything perfect to the point of being able to fly over Aunt Louise's house as it was in 1942, and see the old dog in the yard that she used to talk about having when she was a little girl http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

The guys need you in ORR, Mate. Your constructive criticism would help to make this an even better game/sim than it is.

Thanks for posting, Sir, and Merry Christmas!

I got no reply to my PM about this to Targ, so excuse me for bringing it up in-thread, but is RedDeth unbanned yet? red here. this callsign will be banned very soon. im just checking in to let you all know that i am still banned.without reason . and no email has been sent to me. targ banned me. and the other mods have no idea why i was banned. targ refuses to unban me and he refuses to contact me.

i believe the reason why he has not emailed me about banning me is that he knows he just did it on a whim. i hear from many sources that they are now banning everyone that is not being totally nice or sweet.

you guys know me. i always joke around and everything i say is said with a grain of salt. i have never had any ill will towards anyone and try to be funny every day. targ really stepped over the line with this banning. i hope someone takes this up with him as you can check this thread and see i violated no rules.

The initial post in this thread has caught my eye, Tsisqua, and the point you make that the "fanboys" here seem to be the mature lot in the community. I don't post here much but I follow the threads on a daily basis, and have been doing so for years. It is easy to notice that the bad language, the "calling names" behaviour, the bad manners come mostly from the teenagers in spirit amongst us. As somebody said, it's not that you stop playing when you get older: you get older when you stop playing. The difference between a man and a boy is that a man may feel like a boy when playing, but the boy can't behave like a man when it comes to it. He will insult people when contradicted, whine and rant instead of reasoning. If I where to take seriously any of those inmature reactions when they show up in my job (I'm a high school teacher) I would go crazy. Just take it easy, mate: when a kid yells, he's asking for a lesson, no matter its age. Let its parents and professionals give it to it and enjoy your own.

I AM A BOY when I play this sim.I revert back to that 10 year old with a model airplane in his hand pretending to dog fight as i ran around the room shouting blam blam blam.
It isn't till i look in the mirror to shave that I notice my age dogone mirror

when someone says "fan boy" the negative conotation is simple: in my mind that means "someone has become so bias'd to the game that they fail to open their eyes to problems that exist and will defend against even when wrong".

So, I think it's important to be mature and realize not all is perfect, but something doesn't have to be "perfect" to be enjoyable.

imo - I do not want to be such a "fan boy" that I actually do not see truth behind my bias http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But, being a fan of IL2 is different - I mean, this is the best game ever made - LOL
