When driving past the local flying club to day I spotted this among the Cessnas

It may be of interest to some.

Whereabouts in Australia is this?

Surprising to find one here

Something like that almost looks out of place at a small field like that, but it would be a very welcome sight.

I am pretty sure I have seen that wandering around the Cessnock Winery region in the company of a couple of Yaks last year.

I can imagine myself trying down my Piper or Cessna and then this drives up! That must be like the Ferrari pulling up to the red light beside me in my Honda.

What's up with the diamond shapes on the paint? I've seen them in skins for USN planes like Corsairs and they're pretty distinctive.

G symbol

It just means the plane in question belongs to the USS Essex (CV 9) .

I rang the owner but it wasn't the chap with the same name that I used to work for unfortunately. ( I might have wrangled a ride )
He said that they had three of these aircraft and it came from New Zealand but seemed a bit hazy on it's past life.
If things go as planned it would be flying at the Williamtown RAAF base Air Show in mid September.

I'm going back next weekend as he said that they may give it run if he gets time ( said it needs to be run regularly to keep the oil ok ) ?
and that I would be welcome to take some close up pics. When I asked if it would fly then he said "maybe"
So more later.
cheers, Ibis.
