It was common practice with Italian pilots flying the C.202 to not use the wing guns. They felt that the extra weight hindered their performance. Italian pilots liked to "Turn and burn".
If anyone brings up the supposed "cannon arm batch". That was a single prototype, a Series XII aircraft I believe, that was tested with the German 20mm wing pods like the Bf 109. The tests showed that there was significant performance reduction and no other aircraft were so modified.
The Series III, C.205 had wing mounted 20mm's. but that was a re-design.

Performance wise there isn't much difference in the various series of the Macchi C.202. Basically, the ability to have the wing armament was there from the start, but the guns were not added in the production line till at least Series VII. Other additions were a sand filter (series II or so), improvements in pilot armor and hard points under the wings (series IX or later) for munitions.
I would be happy with a Series IX. Right now I am at work without my references so I might be off on some of these series. Let our Italian friends correct my information. Some series were just batches made by other companies, i.e. Breda. Its interesting that you can tell the manufacturer by the camoflage pattern applied. Each company took a different characteristic pattern within the limits of the regulations. Aermacchi was famous for smoke ring pattern, Breda had a blotch pattern with a typical heart shaped blotch seen on the fue****e.
This has always been one of my favorite aircraft.
