I've had 3.04 since it was released nearly a month ago, but in the last week PF has been crashing horribly. Not only does it crash the game but also windows XP! It sounds weird that a problem like this would suddenly crop up after no hardware or software changes have taken place. When I first installed IL2FB nearly two years ago I suffrered major crashes like this all the time and at the time I traced the problem to an overheating processor....and with added cooling this problem dissapeared and has not been a problem since. I have checked the processor temperature after these crashes and its well within safe parameters, so I know that's not the problem this time. What I have noticed is that my system temperature is rather high..almost as high as the processor! Now I don't know if this could crash the game or not. It seems weird to me that this would just start happening fo rno apparent reason. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful. Below is my current Dxdiag incase you need it:

BTW, CPU temp at idle is 45deg and about 52deg during game, but system temp is over 40deg!

I would ideally like to keep both my souncards as I use one for teamspeak and the other for sound FX...is there a way of sorting them so they dont conflict?

Have you tried opening the side of the case - 40c is hot & there are probably things in there that are even hotter when the system temps are that high.

And... the reason for this?

The reason for this is that you have three choices where Teamspeak and one soundcard is present:

1)Sound FX and Teamspeak go through headphones

2)Sound FX and Teamspeak go through speakers

3)Buy an expensive pair of USB headphones

I like my setup because it seperates the two - TS goes to headset, sound FX to speakers. But if the soundcards are fighting with eachother I don't mind buying a USB headset as my old set are on their last legs.

In answer to your question Monson, yes I have tried opening the side but it makes no difference, besides I have a whopping great fan in the side of my case, which injects cool air anyway. I also have two exhaust fans at the back, one exhaust fan in the top and a massive induction fan at the front. To be honest my system temp has always been around 40deg and has never caused me any problems before, and I'm more inclined to believe that the mobo/bios is giving out dodgy readings.

I had almost exactly the same system 3.2 64 AMD, 1Gig RAM, 5600FX. And all I have to say that is one unfortunate cohabitation of PC components. PF crashing like crazy, sometimes on desktop sometimes reboot my machine..

And not only that, I cannot install some games (most of them) at all. Including FB+AEP+PF. When installing FB system simply tells me that dat1.cab is corrupted or something (CD's are original and unscratched like new -- I have installed game from them several times on my old PC). I dunno. Fortunately I have backed up my FB folder, but the situation is very serious, so I will return my PC (I have purchased it few days ago) in store for further inspection.

BTW my CPU temp never goes above 40Ô?C (I have LED on my PC box with displying options for temp. of CPU and VGA). When playing FB CPU temp. is usually around 39Ô?C (at max. 39,7Ô?C).

I have visited store today and the merchant tells me it is most likely memory that is wrong (dust in slot or something). But we are talking about brand new PC.. I'm keeping it in my room, not stable, so it can't possibly pick up that amount of dust in few days. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Interesting part is that when game runs it runs perfectly (average rates are high even over cities on large maps).

I'm really worried.http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

For the best part my system runs really sweetly...hardly ever crashes and I've never had any install problems. I built it myself so I can't blame anyone else for its problems! It's just PF has started crashing for no good reason! I have removed my old SBlive as advised by Luckboy and also my old 56k modem, which I haven't actually used in 18 months! While I was at it I removed all the dust from the system - with 5 case fans, 1 chipset fan, 1 CPU fan and 1 AGP fan it certainly picks up dust! I'm getting slighly reduced temperatures now: CPU between 44 and 50 deg and system about 36deg. I haven't given the system an extensive test yet but I will later on and if its okay I will report back and if not I will also report back!

BTW I have also reverted to the Nvidia 66.81 video driver as I have heard it's more stable. I hope this was a sensible thing to do.

Run the Black death track and tell me if you think having sound for the game coming out your speakers and sound for the coms through your headset are "worth it"! You can adjust in game sound settings and the coms program to balance all that out and the bonus will be solid performance and greater system stablility while sucking up less power from your power supply and the heat it creats.

However, in the end, the chioce is up to you. Also, with the USB headsets, you end up with another sound device listed and in my opinion, they are not worth the hassle. For those of you with them, run the Black Death track with and without them installed to see the difference.

Okay, I palyed online last night for quite some time and I can report that game stability seems to have improved. The game still crashed twice - once while I left it for about an hour and another time when I tried to swith-to (alt Tab) another application. The game did not crash whilst I was using it though, so lets hope it's sorted. Gonna give it one more trial tonight and if I get similar results I think I can be sure that the problem is solved.

I don't know where or when this sort of thing all started... maybe back in the original version of Windows days... but some folks think it is ok for the computer to crash once a day, a week, a month... sorry, none of it is any good!

Did the game crash or did the computer crash?

Did you get any errors when this happened?

I strongly suspect mismatched RAM that doesn't work and play well together. How many sticks of RAM do you have and what are their size, brand and model name as well as speed? As I've read threads in this forum over time, I've found that there is something about three sticks of RAM going that almost always leads to instability. I'm sure there are many who run 3 sticks of RAM no problem. Still, this forum has a history of people going through all kinds of hoops... even testing the RAM and finding it good, only to discover that if they added a stick (adding less likely to cure) or removed a stick, they were good to go, especially if they removed the stick most unlike the others in size, then speed capability, then brand name, then model in that order of priority.

It could also be a heating or power issue here even thouh you report good temps. Running the game minimized will not heat things up as much as if you were running full screen. Download and run motherboard monitor while playing the game. It will keep a log of high, low, average and current temps and voltages. It would be good to have that information even if it is just the game that is crashing.

Okay...on the good side no crashes today as yet.

When the computer crashed yesterday it was the whole computer not just the game.

I have three sticks of RAM in my machine, all of which are PC3200 and 512mb. Two of them are made (or supplied at any rate) by a UK company called PC World. The third is made bya company called Nanya Technology.

I already have Motherboard Monitor and I have been keeping an eye on the system temps with the log file, here are the results: At idle my CPU temperature sits at about 43deg while the system is about 37deg. During aa two hour online dogfight the CPU temperature sat quite consistantly at 51deg and only once in that two hours did it hit a maximum of 52deg. The system temperature sat quite consistantly at 40deg and went to a maximum of 41deg. According to Mobo Monitor my average CPU temp was 49deg.

Here is a quick sample of system voltages from the log:

+3.3 - between 3.25 and 3.26

+5.00 - between 5.05 and 5.11

vagp - between 1.46 and 1.47

vmem - between 2.59 and 2.61

On a side note, my system is the most stable system I've ever had. Apart from during PF it never crashes, and before the last week or so even PF did'nt crash very often.

PC World.I would definately suspect the ram.on my shop built comp (Advent 3311)when i upped the ram from 512 to ,first 768,then 1024,the ram that was recommended by PC world when fitted the pc would'nt boot. After a row in the store the tech guy went out the back and got a couple of sticks of 512 unbranded ram (which was cheaper)and that works perfectly (still does a year later).Next time i will go to crucial, because A)it is guarenteed to work, and B)it is cheaper and better than PC world http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Okay, I think its sorted. Have had no crashing for two days. I think those little mods I've done did trick...its just weird how the problem suddenly arrose when the system hasn't change in 3 or 4 months?! If I have any more problems I will post again, but lets hope not!

I'd like ti thank all you guys who took the time to help me get things on track, especially Luckboy who knows his stuff!

Cheers Guys!
