View Full Version : Keeping your underpants in a biscuit tin.

A couple of years ago I was given a brief tour of a 1950s British diesel-electric sub that was moored in a local harbour. As I passed through the crew's sleeping quarters I noticed that the bedsheets were made of rubber, not some kind of comforting sleepy rubber but standard Dunlop type rubber.

When I asked why (I'm really not very well read on the subject of subs, just like the games) the tour guy said that the condensation was so bad when submerged that anything porous became absolutely sodden after a couple of hours. He said the more prepared members of the crew used to bring a biscuit tin to keep their underpants and socks in, so at least they were dry in the areas that mattered.

Anyway, I was wondering whether anyone knew if this was a problem for the Kriegsmarine? It's close to my idea of hell being on a submerged sub let alone having wet underpants at the same time.

Nick...are you absolutely sure this happened ? Sounds more like the memory of a cheese-induced nightmare to me. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Paul K, I can guarantee this was the case on 1950s British diesel-electrics. Well, I saw the rubber bedsheets for myself.
Guess that's why I posted this, just wanted to know if there were any other examples of this kind of situation in the history of submarining, that's all. It does make sense to me though, that (sweat) respiration's* gotta go somewhere.

Anyway I'm perfectly prepared to be challenged on this, so fire away.

Not sweat: respiration. The same thing happens in a car, tent etc...They needed de-humidifiers.

Hee hee, now that does make sense. Guess you'd HAVE to make up a cover story for that one. A flotilla made up of incontinant sailors, that would put fear into the hearts of the enemy.

I usually have to wash my underpants in a biscuit tin after a good DC attack! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

They get a bit soiled, you see! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Biscuits are best avoided on Subs full stop, juging by the evidence, only accept snacks in foil wrappers!.
