Hey guys, I'm trying to make the game look nice and I just figured out that I needed to run in opengl for the best water. I found a guide over at airwarfare.com airwarfare guide (http://www.airwarfare.com/tech/graphicsil2.htm#001)

So far, I've:
1. switched to OpenGl
2. in setup.exe I selected "use stencil buffer" and also S3TC...I deselected Texture Anisotropic Extension.
3. In game, I made sure that Excellent landscapes and Perfect Water were selected and also verified OpenGl as renderer.
4. Then I went into the config.ini and set water to 4 and trees to 3.

In Nvidia settings (version 91.31), I did the following:
-AA 2x
-Anisotropy to 2x
-Set Image settings to Quality
-Turn ON Vsync
-Trilinear Optimisation to ON
-Conformant texture clamp to ON

So far, the water looks nice, but above all the ships are a bunch of black lines and there seems to be an arc in front of my plane in the water...a black arcing line.

In the nVidia Control Panel under 3D Settings then under Manage 3D Settings, set the "Texture filtering-Quality" to High Quality. It will probably be a hit on the fr's, but should still be playable. To me, this setting is what makes this game look the best using an nVidia setup. Although I am running SLI with two 7900GT KO SC's right now, this setting worked fine when I ran a single card.

Also, so far the only drivers I have found to get rid of the black arc is the 96.89's from www.guru3d.com (http://www.guru3d.com)<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I can't seem to find that setting "Texture filtering-quality"...I'll keep looking. Thanks for the tip on the 96.89 drivers...will try those if I can't fix the arc another way. Do you have water set to 3 or 4?

Set image quality to "High":

Turn on triple buffering if you're running V-Sync on:

Here's my "IL2 Setup" settings:

I have pretty much the same rig as you, but with CPU clocked to 2.85 Gigs and GFX clocked to 525/725. Running at 1280x960, get about 45 fps avg. in "Black Death."<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The black arc on the water is an Nvidia driver issue introduced after the 84.xx series of drivers. The most recent drivers reportedly fix the black arc problem.

I keep my set up simple, no compression, just use the IL2 setup utility to set for Open GL, use Nvidia GeForce 4, 5, 6 series cards. Stencil buffer needs to be on and landscape set to perfect.

My computer and settings:
AMD A64 4000+ San Diego 1.35 volt, 2.4GHz overclocked to 2.616GHz at 1.45 volts
2GB Corsair Value 400MHz PC3200 RAM (4 x 512MB) clocked to 402 MHz
WD-120 Ultra ATA 100 HD with 8MB cache
SB Audigy 2ZS sound card
eVGA NV6800 Ultra PCIe video card, 256MB RAM
TrackIR 3Pro with Vector Expansion
CH Products USB Fighterstick
CH Products USB Pro Pedals
Windows XP SP2

Video Card:
84.21 driver
4x FSAA
0x AF
Image setting High Quality
Vsync ON
Force mipmaps None
Conformant texture clamp ON
Extension limit OFF
Trilinear optimization Off
Anisotropic mip filter optimization Off
Anisotripic sample optimization Off
Triple buffering Off
Negative LOD bias CLAMP

I found that the 96.XX drivers result a significant hit in average FPS (about 10 FPS reduction) for the black death track versus the 93.71 drivers. But if you can live with lower frames then the 96.xxx seem to be good. I'm looking forward to the day when I can see water = 3, no black arc, and average FPS of ~ 50 at AA=4, AS=2, Image=high quality with my 7900GT (512MB).

Ok, so far, I've done the following:

Under Nvidia:
Set Image Quality to "High Quality"
Triple Buffering "ON"

Under IL2config.exe
Texture Mipmap Filter to "trilinear"
What settings for the following and what do they do?
Texture Compression...none or S3TC?
Use Dither?
Use Vertex Arrays?
Polygon Stipple?
Texture Anisotropic Extension?

Finally, should I have water set to 3 or 4 and I don't seem to have a 3dgunners setting in conf.ini?

I think you used to have to add the lines for 3d gunners and clouds, not sure. Anyway, here's how mine looks:

Texture compression will give you a performance boost at the expense of nasty (to me) artifacting on skins. The other extensions I don't really mess with, I usually set it to the most recent Nvidia card listed in the drop down menu and then switch it to custom to tweak the filtering (bilinear-trilinear-anisotropic).

As for water, 3 & 4 are both pretty smart looking, with four being the best. Try both with different types of weather and see what you like. I usually run water=1 because I can't keep the performance up with 4xAA 8xAF and water=3 at my resolution.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Not much IQ difference between water=3 or 4. So I would choose water=3.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

If you switch the nvidea control panel to NEW nvidea panel you will see some other options as well.

Once you have switched go to 3Dsettings,adjust image settings with preview, use advanced, take me there. There you will have two tabs,Global and Program settings,go to program settings..what you set here will overide the Global tab.Scroll down to IL2FB+aep.

After a ****e load of testing i have

Anistropic filtering 8
Anistropic mip filter Opt Use Global
Anistropic sample Opt Use Global
AA 8s
Conform texture clamp Use Hardware
Error report Off
Extension limit Off
Force midmaps none
Gamma correct Off
Hardware acceleration Multiple display perf
Negative LOD bias Use Global (Clamp)
SLI perf mode Force split frame rendering
Texture filtering Quality
Threadied Opt Auto
Transparency AA Off
Trilinear Opt On
Triple Buffering Off
Vertical sync Force on

Perfect mode 1280X1024 @75Hz,water 3,forest 3,effects 1,3d gunners.IL2 setup video=nvidea Geforce6800/6600/f/4/3.Sound= EAX1,stencil buffer,s3tc.

core2duo ,asusp5n32-sli premium,two 7900gs,2 gig ram. 93.71 drivers.
No overclock,i like em stock http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Frames, Min, Max, Avg
35,78,58.693

.. locked at 75 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif (vysinc on)

Still seeing the black ring in water 4
Frames, Min, Max, Avg
24,62,43.279

Used the 96.89 drivers no black ring but FPS are down across the board so i can live without it,went back to the 93.71s.

If i turn Vysinc off i get this

Frames, Min, Max, Avg
60,141,75.993

But the tearing is annoying,of course dropping AA or AF down is going to give more frames but jaggies drive me nuts,if i want that sort of look i will go back to EAW http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
