View Full Version : Early Warning! Flying Tigers campaign nearing completion

Of the 68 or 70 missions total for my updated AVG campaign, only about a half dozen remain to be made

For those who have been waiting, it will be released in 7 or 10 days, I hope. It depends on my job, really

For those who have no idea, well this is fair warning that you need some stuff now, to be prepared for the campaign if you want to have the whole thing

Just about two years ago, I made an AVG (American Volunteer Group, or "Flying Tigers") campaign that folks enjoyed. I was missing several key elements, notably some Japanense planes, and it was my first campaign. So it wasn't quite all I wanted it to be. It was called "When Tigers Could Fly" and was 34 missions, following the basic actions and movements of 3rd Pursuit Squadron AVG, from Burma to China, and all around the area, to Thailand and IndoChina (VietNam).

Almost since I released that campaign, I have been trying to improve it. The improved and updated version, called "white sun, blue sky", is the campaign I'm giving you warning about the release of.

You need a little early warning because the campaign needs about 70 skins, many of which were made by me, to work properly. if I had planned to include the skins in the download for the completed campaign, you'd be looking at about 170MB of downlaod. That's no typo, the campaign is BIG, it is over 90MB right now, missing 6 or 7 missions, 4 cutscene movies, and the correct splashscreen, while each skin is 1MB, making the total size quite unmanageable. It's a monster without the skins, and frankly I apologize to dail-up users but this is the campaign I wanted to make

Anyway- download the skins first! Please pelase please beleive me here- if you don;t have the skins and run the campaign, the sim will revert missing skins to Defaults, and installing the custom ones later will not make them work in the campaign. You'd have to delete the entire campaign and reload it. So please, check at Mission4Today and get the skins ASAP if this new campaign of mine is something you're interested in. Here is a link:

skins needed are all in packs, with "WSBS skin pack" in the name. NO individual skins from this link are used (http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=search&sa=306)

One further skin pack will be needed. It's an "oops" pack, made up of things I forgot to add, and I will submit that for download in the next few days, once I'm sure I haven't missed anything else

About the campaign:

This campaign follows, as closely as I can manage, historical events that really happened to 3rd Squadron AVG in '41 and '42. I have had to compromise, and I have had to alter some things. but you're flying on the days they flew (plus extra missions), doing what they did, to the best of my ability to manipulate the sim

The storyline is not 100% perfect. I have simplified some events, and altered some thigns so that on one hand, it will still make sense to players who are not Scholars in CBI history, and on teh other, is still playable within the limits of the sim

The campaign features:

*many skins
*historical timeline
*multiple, detailed custom locations, including:
~ the 'Rangoon' area
~ 'Central Burma'
~ 'Salween River Gorge'
~ 'Yunnan Province China'
~ 'Kwangsi Province China'
~ several areas in 'IndoChina'
~ "several areas in 'Thailand'

Of course, these maps are customised by me from existing maps

*All new never released medals and awards
*custom splash screen
*custom menu music
*custom rank (that works; when you are promoted to Flight Leader, you lead a damned flight)

and most importantly:
* <span class="ev_code_YELLOW">a new, "Chinese" campaign branch</span>

that last one is a biggie. I will not hack your sim files or anything like that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif It is a feature of the sim that is not used by almost everyone. I'll explain

There is a country, coded "nn" that the sim recognises. The "nn" country is "None". It is already coded. You don't have a campaign structure for it is all. "White sun, blue sky" will take advantage of this and give you that structure, complete with menu music, custom campaign branch icon, and splash.

if this confuses you, look at this pic, and check out the name of the country on the screen:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/Chuck_Older/None.jpg

that was a test I made over a year ago to see if this worked http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif . It does, and it still is working right now on my PC

One last warning: I have over 40,000 objects on some of my maps. That's not a typo. This campaign will test your PC's horsepower. I urge you, if you play this campaign at high video settings and you have the slightest worry that your PC is not a Superhero, then prepare yourself for dropped frames. Here's a small taste of what's on some maps, and this one is not the one with 40,000 objects, either:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/Chuck_Older/k2.jpg

You're thinking "big deal". That's a *fair* example of an object-intensive area. Don't say I didn't warn you about graphics http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

This campaign is made using Il2:Sturmovik 1946. You MUST have 4.07 or above to play it.

So to sum up:

Campaign will be done soon

You'll need skins, and downloading them takes time. You now have ample of that to work out downloads for skins needed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Also prepare yourself for a 100MB campaign download, and remember that the country you'll choose the campaign under will be called "None"

Looking forward to this especially with the new (old) range of Japanese a/c. I played WTCF twice with a long break between the two and enjoyed it immensly both times.
Many thanks for your dedication.
I get impatient making missions in the FMB and cannot imagine creating such a large campaign, but I can imagine the time it must have taken you. You must have the patience of a saint.

What dedication to do all of this. IF and when I buy 1946, your Flying Tigers campaign will be one of the main reasons!

Thanks for the support, everyone, but thank me when it's done and working correctly http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I am officially done mission making, editting and playtesting for this weekend! I spent about 20 hours on this the last two days.

But that also means that out of 70 missions total, I only have 5 left to do http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sounds great, how do I aquire the campaign once it is done? I would definitely emerse myself in it if I can get it to work.
BTW, coincidently while in the Army I was assigned to the 229th for about 3 years, it has since been deactivated, in June 04 I think it was.
The unit was made-up of AH-64 Apaches.

Chris--I'd like to ask a couple of things.

Are we meant to download the six skinpacks at the bottom of your link there, or is there one in particular we should get?

Also- what kind of framerates are you getting on the 40k object map, and what hardware do you have?

XyZspineZyX
03-12-2007, 06:19 AM
You are over-complicating http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If a skinpack has the words "wsbs skinpack" in it's name, then it is a skinpack required for wsbs. If I were to make one skinpack for wsbs, that would be about 70 skins, which means 70MB. Actually off the top of my head, I think there's actually 86 skins needed altogether, so it's more like 86MB.

If you see the words "wsbs skinpack" in a download name, then that skinpack is needed for the campaign ˜white sun, blue sky'. Also, in each download description, you will find I mention that the wsbs skinpacks are needed for the campaign

My PC is a 2.08Ghz Athlon, with 2MB RAM, GeForce6800 (plain), lots of HD space, onboard sound, and I defrag, run bot checks, and purge old useless files every week. I have 13 things running in the background, which is bare minimum for my PC, so the rig works pretty smoothly even though it's yesterday's news

I run Perfect settings, no AA, at 1024x768 on the sim

As for frames on the 40K map, it depends on where you are. The objects are fairly dispersed across the entire map, but some areas are denser than others. I haven't checked framerate in a while, my test is generally autopilot with 8x time compression. Usually, it is as smooth as normal time compression, but there are areas in which I drop a frame now and again, usually it is over "Rangoon", when bombs hit their targets. That's because say 40 bombers are pounding the city. There is one mission, which is also in WTCF, in which the player and 16 friendlies engage over 50 bombers, and that one has always been a PC workout from day one. I made sure to keep that mission area well away from densely populated places

Of more concern is the map shown on the screenshot I provided. That city is my ˜Kunming', and even has the Kunming zoo in it, and a wall around the entire city with gates, industrial areas, commercial, residential, slums, the works. Kunming is directly next to the airbase, which itself is densely populated. So although that map has about 11,000 objects on the entire map, if you look right on takeoff from Kunming, things get choppy on my PC at anything over normal time compression. Overflying is no problem, even in combat. It's weather-dependant to a degree, I always make sure to pan around the cockpit and let the clouds get drawn when the mission starts, and then things are much better

My PC should be pretty middle of the road, or actually a bit worse, with the onboard sound. Every screen shot you'll see me post for the campaign is at the resolution I play in, by the way, so no super-sexy shots as 1600x1200 with 4x AA and forest and water=3 on anything you'll see me post from the campaign. What I post for screenies is what I see

chris, M4T now has all those sub catagories to sort skins. One major branch is "themed skin packs." It might be a good idea to see if they can put the WSBS skins in there (or cross reference them) since they cross different types of aircraft overall.

Looking forward to this campaign!

<EDIT> One other suggestion: right now there are 6 packs of skins, you mentioned a 7th. It would be good for the titles in M4T to say WSBS and 1of7, 2of7, 3of7, and so forth for people who might find it without reading as much about it on the forums. <S>

Funny you should mention the title. I couldn't decide on one, and I was just looking for nationalist Chinese information one day. I liked 'When Tigers could Fly' a lot as a title and I was kind of unhappy I was going to need to change it, but I decided I needed to. I found a great pic of the Chinese national insignia, and I thought to myself, 'well, what did the Chinese call that flag?'. It was just idle curiousity as the flag name didn't seem to matter much. So I read up on it, and they called the flag the "White Sun and Blue Sky", and suddenly I knew I had my new campaign title http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I have downloded all WSBS files and placed them on a directory called WSBS
When i extract the rar files ( it says 16 files extractedto) extract here, they maks a new directory but when i open this it is empty

And another thing when i look into the rar files there is a lot of files but they are not related to anny plane names ?

Questions : Where did the files go?
I cant find them
And what are in the files, are they skinns?? If to what plane.
I feel im loosing controll here. Need an explanation.

I found the files.
Strange problem

I have a main directory called : "Alle våre dokumenter"
Her i jused the norwegian letter å
The extractprogram then makes a new main directory called "Alle v(a strange letter)re dokumenter" and stores the files here.

That was the explanation for where the files goes.

Looks like I can still make things complicated for myself. I opened the, for example, 3rd AVG folder for skins. No directions so I downloaded in the P-40E folder....ooops, wrong plane...got a funky paint job...lol

I guess the 1st, 2nd and 3rd AVG folders are P-40C skinsor the Tomahawk II? I am trying to remember...gotta go find out!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

LOL, I give up...I will await further instructions on which folders to put these in.

Were they P-40Bs or P-40Cs?
They were Royal Air Force Tomahawk IIBs, perhaps with some elements of the older IIA model thrown in. Here's how the Curtiss fighter developed:

In 1938, Curtiss sold 200 radial-engined P-36 fighters to the U.S. Army. The company model number was H-75, and many were sold abroad as Hawk 75s. The plane was obsolescent from the first day, compared to liquid-cooled fighters then coming on line in Europe, so Curtiss redesigned it for the liquid-cooled Allison engine. The result was its model H-81, arguably the most handsome American fighter of all time. The U.S. Army bought 200 and put them in service as the plain-vanilla P-40. France ordered 140, which Curtiss built under the company built under a slightly different designation: H-81A. After the fall of France, Britain took over this order and put the planes into service as Tomahawks, Mark I. Because it lacked pilot armor and self-sealing fuel tanks, the British used it only as a trainer.

The RAF asked for armor plate, "armourglass" in the windshield, and self-sealing fuel tanks. Curtiss obliged, but the self-sealing consisted of a rubber coating around the outside of the tank--what the British called "Superflexit." This improved model was known to Curtiss as the H-81A2 and to the British as Tomahawk Mark II or IIA. Still not considered good enough to fight alongside the Spitfire in home defense, these planes were sent to Commonwealth squadrons in North Africa. Only 110 were built, of which 23 went to Russia and one to Canada. The U.S. Army bought 131 with American equipment and put them into service as the P-40B, known to Curtiss as H-81B.

The British next asked Curtiss to improve the gas-tank protection system, and in the winter of 1940-1941 the last and most numerous of the small-mouthed fighters began to move down the assembly line in Buffalo. Curtiss didn't regard the change as significant enough to warrant a new designation, which remained H-81A2 for the British Purchasing Commission and H-81B for the War Department. The RAF took the plane into service as the Tomahawk IIB, while the U.S. Army called it P-40C. (The "C" model had other improvements, notably shackles on the underside of the fuselage for a droppable fuel tank.)

The British bought 930 Tomahawk IIBs, and the U.S. Army bought 193 of the more-or-less equivalent P-40Cs. Most Tomahawk IIBs went to North Africa, but some were sent to Russia after the Germans invaded in July 1941, and 100 were diverted to China to equip the American Volunteer Group.

China Defense Supplies paid Curtiss directly for its planes, and the company gave them the designation H-81A3. Up to last year, I believed that the AVG Tomahawks were identical to the British IIB model, but it now seems possible that the new Curtiss model number was more than just a bookkeeping convenience, and that the company used up some of its stock of IIA (that is, P-40B) parts in these aircraft. Among other things, this would explain why Flying Tiger veterans recall that the AVG Tommis had exterior fuel-tank membranes instead of the interior membranes fitted to the IIB model. (For more, see "100 Hawks for China", Joe Baugher's files, and Erik Shilling's commentary on the Tomahawk manual.)

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Hawk:

I know you're not complaining. I don't know how much more clear I can be though. I'm just confused as to where the trouble could be. It's OK though, this is good stuff in case anyone else feels a little lost

every single download you see that has the words "wsbs skin pack" in it's name is a...skin pack for wsbs

That means (if further clarification is needed) that currently you would get the following downloads:

WSBS P-40E skin pack part 1

wsbs AVG P-40E skin pack part 2

WSBS Skin Pack: 1st Squadron UPDATED 2/3/07

WSBS Skin Pack:2nd Squadron

WSBS Skin Pack:3rdSquadron

WSBS Skin pack: Hackpack

I say "currently", becasue there will be one more additional wsbs skin pack you need in addition to those. It is a group of skins I forgot to add, and I want to double check that I have all the skins I forgot

The WSBS skin packs do NOT all go into the H81A-2 folder http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The skins go into the aircraft specified. For example:

H81A-2 skins go to the H81A-2 folder, P-40E skins go to the P-40E folder. The name of the download tells you the location:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/Chuck_Older/skinloc.jpg

In the 'hack pack' there are explicit instructions on where to put the skins. Trust me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I'm the guy that made the download http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Take a look here a minute:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v441/Chuck_Older/skinpath.jpg

Firstly, the file named readmeNOW...well read it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Secondly, the name of each folder tells you exactly and precisely the name of the skin folder the contents MUST go http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I did not simply type the names, I copied and pasted every aircraft name. There are no errors

Just take the contents of each file, and palce those contents into the skin file named. Pie is harder http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Man thats great...I can't wait!!!

I found my problem

I downloaded the first 5 which did not have a read-me. I was so much concentrating on the WSBS that I failed to read anything other the than WSBS in the titles...and quickly hit download!

I missed the last download, Hackpack, which had the instructions in it. I panicked! The funny thing is that I actually got the hackpach files transfered into the correct files first! I then guessed that the other three squadron packs went into the TomahawkIIB folder, after I screwed up with the P-40E folder, since thats what you hear all the time! I am just an American, please forgive my ignorance http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Chris--- are you being merciful and setting the Japanese bomber skill level to rookie? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Yes, all bombers have been set to Rookie. When WTCF was released, you had some sort of chance against some mixed skill units but they track you too well and can see through their own planes, so now all bomber skill should be set to Rookie. This is one of the things I need to double-check on

I should be submitting for upload the final skin pack tonight. I forgot:

3 Ki-43 skins
1 Fi-156 skin (hack for IJA recon plane)
2 Sb2M100A skins (1 CAF bomber, 1 IJA hack for Ki-48)

I also will be finishing the final mission for 'white sun, blue sky' tonight, which brings the total to 71 missions I think

I have artwork to do still, final check of mission sequence, I need to make some cutscenes, and to check on breifing info, but the actual mission making will be done tonight. I am on track for release next Friday

I think this could be a work of art http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
A grand masterpiece maybe? I'm very impressed, again. I've been following the forum about this at M4T. This is your labor of love. To wait so patiently for the Japanese planes and put so much effort into the objects, maps, skins, and make this as realistic as possible is really amazing.
You must be a proud papa! Thanks for the great stuff.

This campaign will be very interesting. From my personal observations flying offline vs Nates, it should be very hard because of the combination of no g-limit on AI, no dive limit, and their magical jink when they enter your gunsight ability.

I've also noticed they don't catch fire, they leak a little, then blow up altogether. Watch out for hitting the debris, lol.

Should be fun.

Am really looking forward to this, after reading of the development of Curtiss aircraft, through to the (unofficial/volunteer) Chinese Campaign, the exploits of Claire Chennault and the three? flying tiger aquadrons.

Looks Great http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

the final mission for wsbs is now complete.

I have much to so with artwork, etc, still, plus testing to check on proper fnction of the campaign. But all missions are done

Also, the final Skin pack for wsbs is now up at Mission4today. All skin packs for wsbs are now numbered for easy identification

Very excited by this, BBB462cid. Thanks for your effort. It deserves praise regardless of the outcome... which I'm confident will be great.
