I have the ultra and I like it, but if my Ti4200 hadn't died I would still be using that because I don't care about water effects. Thats just my preference though.

I'm using the FX 5700 Ultra with a P4 3.2 ghz, 800 mhz buss, 1 gb dual path ddr ram and can run the game with water=1 in perfect mode. Everything else is excellent or high. Make sure forceshaders1x=0. The water looks great as does everything else. I can fly over close to the water against ships with all kind of AAA and AA coming at me along with other planes and have no stutters. The only time I get a little is when in full cockpit and I switch the mirror on in my corsair to look behind me. Otherwise my rig works great.

I have the FX 5700 ultra as well. With an AMD 2400 (2.0 ghz) and only 512 ram, I run water=2 on perfect and everything else as high as it goes. Also I run with 4X Antialiasing and 4X anisotropic filtering on 1024X768. I find it runs very well. Again the only time I notice even a slite studder is with alot of aircraft flying and alot of AA, and the studders are very slight. I'm pleased with the card overall, for price anyway.

What frame rates are you getting, taiter? I am a bit underwhelmed with the frame rates I am getting on my 9800 Pro with 1GB RAM, AMD 2000 on excellent/perfect. On high settings I get 50-60 fps, but going with perfect water I get 15 fps!

i dont think going from a 4600 to a 5700 will be that big of a jump. If it were me, i'd hold off, save a few extra dollars, and go for one of the newer cards. a 6800 would be great, but the 6600 looks like a bargin, although i'm not sure if you can get it in an agp version.

BTW aaron, perfect can be tough on my 9800 pro also. I have a gig of hi quality ram, my barton is clocked at ~2380mhz, and I have a 9800 pro AIW. I followed some advise here(see this line http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=49310655&m=4501076732) and cut out the AF. It helped, but the one thing that really seems to bring me to my knees, is the shallow water. I see fps in the low 20's when over that, even with the af off. But for the most part, perfect is completely playable and the fps average in the hi 30's. I dont know if i could ever go back to excellant now.

The games manual on page-8 says, "Try to use ForceShaders1x=1. It's helpfull for ... 5700 cards." Is that correct? The suggestion above is for ForceShaders1x=0. I've Also seen several recommendations for HardwareShaders=1 and Water=0. What might really be the best mix for these 3-settings?

I have a P4, 3Ghz, 5700 with 268 video, and 2 Gig Ram.

When I had Forceshaders1x=1 as the text recommended, I had this awful pixelated mess when looking at the sun reflections off of the water while the sun was low on the horizon. In general the water looked like hell and the waves did not look right at all. Only after I put Forceshaders1x=0 did the water look great. I have water=1, effects=1, hardwareshaders=1, other things like forest= all at 2. I read somewhere in the forums that water=2 does not work.

I like my 5700 Ultra as well. Not the best card, but affordable and relatively good performance wise, which is exactly what my budget allowed. I think it has good bang for the buck

I also will be upgrading to an FX5700. Wondering what the difference between an FX5700 and a 5700 ultra are.

Also, is there much chance these days that various hardware won't interact with each other? Must one stick to the hardware recommended by their motherboard maker?

GF6600GT AGP is being introduced to market as we speak...

I'm recommending a FX 5700 to a friend of mine.

My friend has my Geforce3 Ti500 (I gave him this card, becuase at that time he couldn't afford a good 3D card).

He was thinking about upgrading that card and I recommended the FX 5700. It's faily cheap and has loads of power. I can find a FX 5700 (non ultra I think) for around 130 euros.

Arron GT: sorry it took me so long to answer, got slammed at work. Anyway, I used to get only 10-15 fps on perfect water too until I realized one thing. For some reason when I installed PF the setup defaulted to the 6800 in my video card selection. I went back and selected the FX series (thats what I have, 5700 ultra). The game ran like a champ after that. Now with perfect water on water=2 I always get over 50 fps.

I'd like to see that. I find it hard to believe. Thats way more than i get. maybe I should trade my 9800 pro in for a 5700. How about posting a screen shot showing the fps when your looking at something besides sky
