I'm still flying the 4.4 version of the game. I have no interest in planes that might have been , so the question is, is it worth buying il46? What's in there for me? I've not seen much about ground objects mentioned. What's new in that area? Opinions most welcome.

There is a new handling/control-interface that is a vast improvement for all planes.
That alone is worth the price.
And maps and ground objects.

and beside the jets/props of the 46 part - historical important flyable planes like the Pe Bombers, A-20C, some japanese fighters and some more japanese AI Bombers.

If you like the game it's worth it. If you're content with nobody flying online with you, solely offline play, jerky .50's in the Corsair and whatnot, then don't upgrade. If you do upgrade though, it's like an entirely new game for you. Definitely worth it.

Russian Rocket Group website (http://www.rrgstudios.com/), home of the development team that made the Pe-2 Peshka, '46 and Sturmoviks Over Manchuria expansions -- basically almost all of the new stuff on the 1946 DVD. The development screens will give you an idea of some of the new ground objects and maps.

In addition, Ian Boys' Burman map and Norway map, and an Italy map are added as bonuses. Ian provided a free DGen campaign for Burma. You can get that along with many other campaigns very easily with Enjoyr's patch series ... they are at Mission 4 Today. (Or go here for a thread with a link that will get you to Enjoyr's patches (http://www.simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2163129&page=1#Post2163129).)

There is still a Slovakia map in the works (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/63110913/m/8931042683), and its going to be a dandy. Possibly at least one more flyable, if you skip to the end of the thread. The new ground objects made for that map are impressive; look for the link to WIP shots within the thread.

I don't know what's in it for you. However, I have IL2'46 since December and not once I have flown the what-if birds.

On the other hand, I immensely enjoyed flying against Ki-27s on the new Manchuria map, flying the IL-10, and P-80 and the Mig-9FS in a Korean War scenario, flying the existing US Navy aircraft without the horrible gun recoil yaw.

And I haven't even got to fly the Arado jet bomber yet... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

There's a big misconception that Il2:1946 has nothing but fantasy

I think I've just been talked into it! Thanks for all the links and replies.

Just the benefit of having a one shot install in the event of that inevitable HD crash is worth it... and at $30.... plus the online bit... yeah..
