Zupp 7: The hunt for Heinrich

“Herr Kaleun, Sir?”

Zupp is awake in an instant. “Yes, Rottweiler. What is it?”

“It’s 1300 hours, Sir. You’ve been asleep for some time. You must have been very tired. Some of the men jailed for the fight with U-48 have reported back aboard.”

“How many, Rottweiler?”

“Six, Sir. Two petty officers and four crewmen. I had them take their boots off before they came down the gangplank to avoid waking you, Sir.””

“Thank you, Rottweiler, that was very considerate of you. “So, the crew is now up to one officer, two warrant officers, eight seamen, the cook and a parrot?

“Yes Sir.”

“Has the navigator reported back aboard?”

“No Sir. That is why I woke you. There are two…ah…gentlemen from the Gestapo here who want to speak to you about Herr Schultz.”

Zupp clambered out of the hatch and crossed the gangplank. Two sinister looking figures in ankle-length black leather coats were waiting, unsmiling. Zupp felt slightly anxious as he approached the menacing pair.

The shorter one of the two stepped forward and gave the Nazi salute.

Heil Hitler! Kapitan Zupp I trust?

Yes, it is. And your name would be…?

It is of no importance what my name is. Ve are looking for a Cherman officer, Heinrich Schultz. Do you know vere he is?

“No, I don’t. I’ve only recently taken command of this boat and most of my crew haven’t reported back yet, including the officer you are seeking. What has he done to upset the Gestapo?”

The shorter man broke into a grin which made him look even more unpleasant. “He is vanted for questioning about seditious remarks made against the turd reich, and our gworious weeders.

Zupp bit his lip. The man had an obvious speech impediment and sounded mildly comical.

The Gestapo officer continued “You vill inform us when he reports, or zere vill be twubble for you.”

He held out a card which Zupp took. “Telephone Lorient 27 when you haf zee information. Good day, Herr Kapitan!”

The pair turned and walked stiffly away as Zupp just looked on in bewilderment. Then a voice from behind made him start.

“I think I know where to find him Sir, but those clowns don’t need to know.”

Zupp turned to face a heavy-set, ruddy-cheeked bruiser of a man, cap tilted to one side and sporting an impressive broken nose. He snapped an immaculate military salute, which Zupp returned.

“Bosun Helmut Rabauke. I’m responsible for discipline aboard this boat. Just reporting back aboard, Sir.”

“Glad to meet you, bosun. Where do you think the navigator is? I don’t want the Gestapo to get their hands on him before I hear his side of the story."

“Come with me, Sir.”

Rabauke had a Zundapp motorcycle combination and the two of them drove into Lorient. Rabauke stopped by an estaminet and Zupp spoke to the owner.

“Heinrich Schultz? Yes I know him. He was in here last night until I had to throw him out for fighting.”

“What happened?” Zupp asked.

“He got into an argument with two SS men who were proposing toasts to the Fuhrer. Heini was drunk, as usual, and started on them. Laid them both out, he did.”

“Any idea where he is now?”

“He could be anywhere.”

The rest of the afternoon they roared around Lorient looking for the errant navigator. Then the Zundapp stalled at an intersection and as Rabauke was furiously trying to kick-start it, Zupp heard something.

“Bo‘sun, stop.”

“What is it Sir?.”

“I can hear snoring. It’s coming from that armoured sentry box over there.”

Zupp dismounted from the sidecar with an extravagant move..http://i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk295/kielhauler/tn_07_Garson_Blitzkrieg_WWII_SidecarHandstand21.jp g ]

He walked over to the odd steel cannister, which looked like an upright bomb with a door. The door was slightly ajar and Zupp cautiously peeked inside. On the floor, curled up in the foetal position, was the unmistakable form of a recumbent German naval officer, smelling strongly of drink and dead to the world.

“Bo‘sun, come here. Is this Shultz?”

“That’s our man, Sir.”

The sound of a commotion further up the street made them both look up. About a dozen armed men, some with dogs, were running pell-mell towards them, blowing whistles and shouting “Halt”.

“Quickly Sir, the Gestapo have got wind of this, we’ve got to get him out of here.”

Heinrich, still out cold, was pitched head-first into the combo. It fired up at the first kick and Rabauke twisted the throttle wide open. The Zundapp took off down the street in a cloud of blue smoke and tilted out of sight around a bend. They were safe, for the moment.

“Where are we going, Sir?”

“We can’t take him back to the boat, that’s the first place they’ll look.”

“I think I know a place where he’ll be safe. We’ll take him to Geraldine’s.”

Zupp was familiar with that name and was becoming curious about this mysterious lady. Ten minutes later the Zundapp screeched to a halt outside an unassuming town house in the backstreets of Lorient.

Rabauke jumped off and knocked on the door. It was opened by a stunning beauty in a long nightgown but with a wary expression. She smiled at him, looked quizzically at Zupp and frowned when she saw Heinrichs’ prostrate backside form sticking out of the sidecar.

“What can I do for you, gentlemen? We are closed.”

Rabauke spoke softly, “We need to hide Heini here for a few hours, madame. The Gestapo are looking for him and we haven’t got anywhere else to put him at the moment. Can you help us? We’ll pay the going rate.” He looked at his captain for approval. Zupp nodded, wondering how much this was going to cost him.

The beauty paused for thought and then replied “Oui, but only until tonight. The Feldpolizie have booked the upstairs room for a party at nine o’clock and I want him gone before then. Heini is a good customer but he causes too much trouble after a few drinks. Bring him inside now before anyone notices.”

Between them they bundled the unconscious form of Heinrich through the building and into the cellar. After checking he was still breathing they made to leave.

“This is going to cost more than the usual rate” the beauty said.

Zupp‘s curiosity got the better of him. “What is your name, sweetheart?”

“My name is Geraldine. I am the owner of this establishment.”

“How much do you want?” Zupp asked.

“Three bunches of bananas and some salami.”

“My boat hasn’t been provisioned yet but I’ll get you the bananas. We’ll be back at seven for him.”

“Bon chance messeurs.”

Zupp and Rabauke clambered back onto the combo and returned discreetly to the bunker, passing numerous sentry points on the way but they were not stopped.

“Is Heinrich actually worth all this trouble Bo‘sun?”

“Yes Sir, he’s one of the best navigators I’ve served with. When he’s sober of course.”

Episode 8 in preparation...

@ Celeon: Point taken http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

@ MartiniMik: hope it didn't cause you to spill your coffee...

@ Foe: It's been over two years since Zupp last surfaced. I expect most of the people who have joined this forum since October 2008 haven't got a clue what I'm writing about.

The 'bomb with a door' came from a random search on Wiki Images. It was untitled and undated so I've no info on it. I have no real idea what it is but an armoured sentry or air-raid box is the most likely. Anybody else have a better idea?

But even if only the 'regulars' still enjoy him, that's good enough for me. I'll keep posting. Thanks for the support guys. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

When I saw the new post regarding Zupp I did indeed spill my freshly-brewed java all over my lap. However my wife wanted me to let you know that there's nothing of value down there to burn! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

The sentry box reminds me of a fallout shelter from Fallout 3

Would a moderator be kind enough to move this post to its proper place in the sticky: 'Useful links & Information'?

Just trying to 'bump' interest in the forum, especially for the 'old guard' who know me from two years ago. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Not blowing my own trumpet.

If poss, put under Kielhauler1961, I am the same person. Check the IP address.

Thank you.
