View Full Version : Hidden Blades Question

I always wanted to know how he extracts and retracts his hidden blades because it sort of looks like they just pop out at will

It's activated by a ring around the pinky finger.

Here's a diagram

Does anyone have a good vid on how to make one wit a good gaunlet. Im looking for a vid of how to make on like ezio and desmond's where the blade is attached to the bracer. Anyone have a good vid that is realistic and cheap and easy?

There are some good videos on youtube to take a look at. Even if none of them are the "best" or what you are looking for, you can get some ideas on the mechanism and inner workings. Watch a few, pick up some tips here and there and combine them to make your own version.

Maybe draw or sketch up a few blueprints, doesn't have to be detailed or stuff. Just so long as you can get the feel for how it works.

Right now, the problem with most hidden blades is getting them to retract like in the game. Most of the ones I've seen use gravity by tipping the blade back. This means it doesn't have a decent locking mechanism, so when you stab someone (which I don't recommend you do for obvious reasons), it will go back into the sheath.

So you have to find a way to lock and unlock it with a flick of the finger. Hmmm.... Any Da Vincis out there? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes we know that, but how does Ezio activate his blade seeing as he keeps his ring finger?

What was the modification that Leonardo did to the hidden blade that allowed Ezio to do this?

Leo didn't make the modification, Altair did. He recorded it down on the Codex, which Leo followed to fix the blade.

We're unsure what the modification is exactly but some say that the base has been raised.

Without having checked the youtube stuf out, I can give you basics for what you need

Blade (the one in the diagram has 3 elements. A bit complex. A simple stiletto blade from a renaissance weapons shop on EBAY will do)

Spring(s) or other decent coil to po the blade out)

chamber for the blade (again, a cheap dagger sheath can be used to great effect)

piano wire of similar steel cable, and some mechanical know-how

You want dual action on the wire pull. One, to pull the stopper (the pivoting piece of metal holding the blade in place when sheathed) out, and allow the springs to push the blade out (to where the notch in the blade catches on the second stopper), and the second wire pull, to release the second stopper, allowing you to puch the blade back in.

Making it is easy. Making it look good will be hard.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I'm starting work on an Enzio (black version) costume in the New year. I work with leather, and have made some Italian renaissance scabbards for friends' rapiers, so the leather stuff will be easy. And I used to make props for a prop shop, so the dual blades shouldn't be too hard. The real trick for me will be finding a costume designer/seamstress that I haven't ****ed off to kake the rest.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In one of the codex pages, Altair describes exactly what changes he made to the blade's structure. I'll write it all down here as I get the chance (I have Cerebral Palsy and can only play games while laying, thus I need someone to assist me whenever I feel like playing - I can't walk to bed by myself, I use a walker).

You want to build the blade? Sure i got quite abit of the schematics for it. But beware! The blade does not do all that it does in the game.

Anyho here it is:

um, its a game. you can't make one in real life that will work like it does in the game.

based on the concept art is fairly simple to make, it's really anything special other than the method of triggering the blade due to it being on your wrist.

but even then its still possible to make a trigger system based on hand gestures.

the only problem with making something like this due to the way a trigger was setup you would need to get right or you could be severely injured, if it could trigger with you hand in the wrong position.

I don't really think, its that simple... For Altair, it looks like there is a mechanism not only to release the blade, but also to pull it back. Because he can release and retract it while just standing, and not moving his arm.

@Atkamon: if you made a dual position trigger it would be very easy to make a reset mech, you would only need something similar to the release system but acting the opposite direction.

But I don't see a ring on ezio's finger??

in the book it says that its triggered by tensing your muscle or something like that

12-03-2009, 08:50 AM
I'm not sure about the trigger being attached to the pinkie because when Ezio releases the blades he moves his fingers in a waving type motion.
As for Altair not being able to release the blades standing still, he can do it because i have done it many times while waiting to kill someone.

Huh? But that doesn't make any sense. If that was the case, not Ezio nor Altair would be able to even move without popping the blade out - not to mention climbing or free-running.

there is a video that shows that the hidden blade has a locking mechanism

12-03-2009, 09:28 AM
@Grandmaster_Z : It is possible.

Anyways to any other people who do want to try to build this, go to http://sinza.forumotion.com/

I am not held responsible for anything you do in this forum.

The retracting part + locking mechanism is achieveable. Think of lazy tongs and springs.

I got almost one.

it jumps out. But I can;t let it go back inside
