Some recents thoughts on missions I have been having .

There are some kinds of missions that are boring me recently. I am interested in playing/making missions that emphasis different skills that most other missions tend to under emphasis.

Some of these esoteric skills could include.

1. Scramble speed.

Getting your plane off the ground in as little time as possible. For example; starting from a hardstand away from the airstrip you have to start the engine and taxi to the airstrip as fast as you can in order to sucessfuly affect an interception.

2. Navigation.

Print a map...read it, don't use the built in map - waypoints etc. In effect, do it for real, or at least more realisticaly.

3. Night/adverse weather.

While the weather we have in the game is far from ideal I am sure that always flying at high noon in a clear sky can get dull.

4. Mission planning.

Most typical missions will have the player follow a series of waypoints to a target or interception. I am starting to prefer a looser format where the player is assigned a task and given some resources (a plane some bombs/ammo) and left to his own to determine the weapons (if any), fuel load - that are to be carried and the route to and from the area that the player will determine.

I guess in short I am interested in some different types of challenges.

Any other ideas?

For a couple of short campaigns that are "different", try Dubbo's "Castaways" campaign and my "Straight Shot" campaign. Not the usual shoot 'em up campaigns. Both are at airwarfare.com under our names in the popular author's section.

If your mission-building, here's a couple of ideas. It makes for an interesting coop scenario, where it's useful to have some kind of map available. The mission map uses perhaps one or two waypoints connected by a course-line but this ends in a recon icon. From there the pilot needs to have remembered the brief! Various recon points are used as guides (and the plane's icon is visible) but it's confused by the icons used for the enemy's guides. Basically the mission targets must be accomplished, and will result in a win only if players pull together.

It's harder than a fully-guided mission but a little more relaxed than full-switch or no map. I can enjoy the latter offline, but my idea works well for coops. I haven't got past the language barrier that is surmounted by the full map. English brief only http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

In terms of weather and lighting...I always like to mix that up. Thats part of the challenge of building and flying a mission. Not every WWII combat sortie was, as you say, flown at 12:00 noon under clear unlimited ceilings. Sometimes there was snow, rain, heavy squalls, and thunderstorms reaching up to 25,000ft or 30,000ft. We don't quite have the flexibility in terms of altitude of effect but we do have some abilities and I like to use them.

The thing I am trying to improve on is more diversity in missions. This is a good dialogue to have in the community.
