I am often impressed by the level of historical, technical, computer and IL2 game knowledge I see on this forum and hope that somebody can answer a few questions I have. I've scoured the boards but can't find anything and I never get a result with the search.

If anyone can shed some light on any of these problems, I'd be greatly appreciative!

1) In FB, why can't I see the white icon for my plane on the map in QMB?

2) I assigned a key (tried several actually) in the controls section for "toggle speed bar" but can't get the darn thing to come up. Since I stink at reading the instruments, particularly the compass, I'm always getting lost in FB.

3) Does anyone else observe no power from engine for the first few seconds after plane spawns in the air in QMB? I usually fly a P-39 and it drops like a rock.

4) Is there a comprehensive list of sound tweaks posted anywhere for the GeForce4 MX? I can't even fly some of my favorite planes because they always sound bad.

5) Finally, I use a MS SW FFB2 stick, which I'm happy with, but wish I could have more buttons since I'm not very good with the keyboard. Is there a product out there that I could plug into another USB port and use alongside of my FFB2? I routinely use over 3 dozens controls.

Sorry if these questions sound stupid but I didn't enter the age of computers until I was well into my 30's. Since this game is ruining my life, I'd like to get the most out of it.

your difficulty settings probably have it disabled

same answer as i)

yep, set throttle to desired power before spawning

its a bug

try going into sound menu where extensions are mentioned and hitting apply (no changes) then exiting, it often fixes it temporarily

Not stupid questions if you are new to this. Some questions that you have asked can be answered by changing the difficulty settings in QMB.

1.There is a "Show map icons" setting.

2.You can't toggle the speed bar on or off if it isn't there. Turn it on in difficulty settings

3. Yes, this happens, but if you are well in the air, and a good distance from your enemy, it shouldn't be a problem to quickly gain energy.

4. If I understand correctly, ther entire sound engine will be redone in the patch that is due to be released in a matter of days

5. Check out the X45 that everyone here is raving about from Saitek(?) to use alongside your MSFF.

Good to have you. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Welcome to the forums! I'm gonna give short answers b/c I have to get ready for work, but others will be along to elaborate:

- If anyone can shed some light on any of these
- problems, I'd be greatly appreciative!
-
- 1) In FB, why can't I see the white icon for my
- plane on the map in QMB?

Turning off one of the map difficulty settings (No Minimap Path) will fix this.

- 2) I assigned a key (tried several actually) in the
- controls section for "toggle speed bar" but can't
- get the darn thing to come up. Since I stink at
- reading the instruments, particularly the compass,
- I'm always getting lost in FB.

Again, there's a difficulty setting that forces the speedbar to stay off at all times. Turn this setting off to get the speedbar back.

- 3) Does anyone else observe no power from engine
- for the first few seconds after plane spawns in the
- air in QMB? I usually fly a P-39 and it drops like
- a rock.

Yep. I think the game assumes the plane is at zero throttle when it spawns, then sees your throttle setting and instantly goes there. It takes a while for some of these engines to spool up. 109s are a good example.

- 4) Is there a comprehensive list of sound tweaks
- posted anywhere for the GeForce4 MX? I can't even
- fly some of my favorite planes because they always
- sound bad.

Find Hunter82's technical tips on www.mudmovers.com (http://www.mudmovers.com)

- 5) Finally, I use a MS SW FFB2 stick, which I'm
- happy with, but wish I could have more buttons since
- I'm not very good with the keyboard. Is there a
- product out there that I could plug into another USB
- port and use alongside of my FFB2? I routinely use

CH Pro Throttle USB. See the following threads:

No problem. That's what the forum is for, just ignore the messes that are going on right now.

[Edit - I didn't read this last bit closely enough. These aren't dumb questions at all. My inital response above sorta implies they are, sorry!]

To #5, there is a guy online (forget the web address) who makes USB controllers.

So you could buy a little peice of circuitry that you can plug 50+ buttons into, set up in one of his nifty programs, and use in FB. No experice needed, you just need to know what a wire, how to use a wire stripper, and some basic knowledge of attaching wires to objects (no soldering needed).

build a wood box, buy about 50000000 buttons at your local electronics place (switches are fine too) and plug it in, set it up, and FLY!

Thanks to everyone for your help! Somehow, when I made the switch to FB, the "next" button on the difficulty page escaped my attention (duh). I did think it was strange that there were fewer options available in the new version.

Also, WTE Galway's tip for the temporary sound fix worked great; I've been truly enjoying the 109 for the first time for the last couple of hours so I didn't see the other replies until just now.

If anyone knows where to buy a USB device like Aflak mentioned, pls let me know. I'm already dreaming up a console I could wrap around my FFB2 with a proper control layout. My current comp was bought solely for this game (2.53G, 512K, etc.) and they were gracious enough to provide extra USB's.

Again, thanks to all who replied!

Also, salutations and welcome to the forum.

With the FF2 you should pick up a dedicated throttle quadrant (best bet is the CH throttle for $150).

The other brains have answered your questions /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

good luck

1) Select "Show MiniMap Path" in difficulty settings.

5) The Belkin Nostromo N50 is what you are looking for. Many people use it for IL-2/FB...
