View Full Version : Can someone tell me why my game is running so poorly now?

I was getting good framerates at 1152x864 with water=2 and effects=2 under 4.03, but since 4.04, my game has been running very poorly. I get terrible frame rates over water with any .dll version I try and I get a complete slideshow with the FoamHQ .dlls when I'm strafing and can see the strikes.

Another poster was kind enough to put up links to the ati.dll betas that were on offer with 4.03 and I do get a bit better frame rate with ATifix3, but then I get the text bug and clipping over water. I never got that with 4.03.

I've reduced resolution from 1152x864 to 1024x768 and I've changed IL2setup from the default X800 settings to custom settings using S3TC compression with trilinear texture filters, but it still runs like garbage. I cut sound way mack to minimums but that actually lowered FPS even more.

I don't understand why I'm getting such huge drops in FPS and I don't want to revert to water=1.

Can someone take a look at my settings and let me know what I should try to tweak?

no idea, but if you post this in the technical help forum, someone there might be able to help you.

Well you shouldnt be running Effects=2(Nobody should)
you might also want to consider updating your VIA chipset drivers as the latest AGP driver is 2004(were alot of problems with the older one after SP2)if you choose to do that be sure to reinstall your GFX drivers again
But I wouldnt expect huge fps running Water=2 with an X800pro at such high res
I have an X800XT and wouldnt play with Water=2 as it would be nearly unplayable IMO. I fly with Water=0 and would only use Water=2 for Screen shots(I fly at 1280x1024, 4xAA, 8xAF S3CT on AF extensions off in IL2setup,Water=0,Effects=0 and normally avg 50 fps)
But the main thing I can say is Effects=2 is not a good idea.

Yes, but the thing is, I was able to play with water=2 settings under 4.03m patch and get frame rates that were perfectly acceptable to me (age 30-35) but now, it's terrible (17-18 over water, 13-15 when zoomed). I just don't understand how it could have changed so much. I ran the 4.03 patch into a dummy folder and pulled the dlls out of there, but I'm still suffering from a big drop.

I have an X850 video card. I run water=2 and effects=2 and I get a constant 50+ frame rate. The only time it gets choppt is behind a bunch of B-17s and they start to bail out. Then I might drop into the teens for a few seconds.

I run at 1024X768 and 75hZ and perfect settings. I use the default setting for my vid card in the IL2 setup.exe.

What are the settings on your video card itself?

Have you searched for "ghost" drivers on your machine?

Sometimes your sound settings can effect your frame rates too. Have you looked there?

When things were running well, I had AA at 6x and AS at 16x. Since 4.04 when things turned sour, I dropped AA to 4x and AS to "let the application decide". Getting a lot more jaggies and blurring in IL2 but also a drop in frame rate. This sucks. I'm lerning to hate these new "optimized" dlls.

I took this quote from Hunter 82's post on tweaking IL-2

Look for this line:

Effects=1

Setting effects to 0 removes shadows under flak bursts etc to improve performance slightly.

DO NOT USE EFFECTS 2 this is not designed for current hardware but for future use.

I trust Hunter82's knowledge on the subject I would assume it is no different then before with using Water=2 pre these new .dlls there is no proper programming or optimizations for it

I have an X800, use Water=2 and Effects=2 (which, BTW, does make a difference especially in water splashes) and can maintain 50+ frames with dips to the 30s in a heavy AAA storm (like from a handful of ships).

Hmmm have you scanned for:

A: spyware
B: virusses

and some defrag??????

Just a thought

Maybe something got corrupted recently, you could try a complete reinstall. If this downt help then...

Use effects=1 not 2. (You should not be using effects 2 anyway, its not supported yet or designed for current graphics cards.

A few people have had a performce drop with the latest patch, maybe it added new stuff or added something which uses more resources.

It doew sound like something has got screwed up tho as you have tried knocking the graphics down and nothing has happened. Maybe its your cpu which is the bottleneck and not your graphics card. Try leaving your graphics setings as they were and turning down a setting which will use less cpu power. Not sure what this would be right now, I'll have a think and get back to you.

Anyone any ideas for a setting which would use more cpu power than graphics card power? I thouhgt maybe view distance but this would use gfx card too, anything better?

Yup, defragged the HD, ran ad-aware, spy-botSD and a registry cleaner. Also tried booting up IL2 via FSAutostart but it's still a slideshow since 4.04. Guess I'll try a reinstall. Ugh.

Sukebeboy,
I would troubleshoot a bit before a complete re-install. Cause if you re-install and still have the same issues you gonna be upset.

Try to see if anything is conflicting. IE: disable sound, disable joystick, Add that zero after your Z axis line in the config file, back up and delete config file, disable TIR, anything you can think of to try and isolate the cause.

Good luck to you bro.

Thanks. I fiddled with all that stuff. Swapped out rts.dll with the one requiring the CD, changed up core.dlls, fiddled with all the settings in config.ini and Catalyst control panel and nothing worked.

Even a low resolution with low AA and AS, I would get a weird cycling effect where, if I looked out over one wing, the terrain underneath would not flow by smoothly, it would rythmically speed up and then slow down, all within the space of a second or so. It felt more like I was riding a train.

I did a complete uninstall of my ATI stuff and a fresh driver install but that made no difference (except that I got some sort of weird error message while setting that up. Wasn't pleased when I saw that but it seems to be working fine and other games like FEAR and Silent Hunter III run fine).

I'm doing the reinstall now, but something odd happened when I tried to uninstall PF merged. It started the procedure by asking me if I wanted to remove the game, I clicked "yes" and it dropped back to desktop without doing anything.

I tried again but got a message saying the uninstaller could only remove games actually installed on my system.

I tried through control panel but got the same message. I was able to delete ILFB and AEP via control panel, but not PF merged. I manually deleted it and ran a registry cleaner, rebooted and ran it again.

When I went to reinstall ILFB, I put the disk in and got the autorun screen, but the install button was greyed out. I had to click uninstall and it proceeded to open up 3 installer windows, one right after another. Then it started installing normally, I hope.

Still about halfway through the reinstall process.

Well it's definitely something to do with either the coding in 4.04m or the dll files. I reinstalled the game and patched it up to 4.03m and tried it out and it ran very smoothly at 1152x864 with water and effects both set to 2.

I installed 4.04m and ran the game. Just like before, as soon as there are explosions or I strafe something, it turns into a slideshow.

Even with effects=1, it's still a slideshow.

Wish I could be more helpful. Did you try force hardware shaders = 1?

On the install thingy, if the option to install was greyed out then there may have been something still in the registry regardless of what your registry cleaner reported.

As a last resort it is sometimes best to step back, take a deep breath, and start from scratch again. I really feel for ya. Next time run dxdiag after each patch and copy it and the config files to a common directory to compare after each patch install to see what, if anything, changes.

I personally would also copy each successive install into a directory of it's own so at least I would have a playable version on hand.

Again, good luck.

WV.

try the omega catalyst drivers? I had a huge performance boost when I changed to those..

sukebeboy

Haven't tried them yet as I'm not having any performance issues with other games, just IL2. Win XP has been acting a little wonky lately though. Adobe refusing to open 2 docs at once, net connection getting slower through the day and the like. Think I might try a system restore to prior to the last WinXP updates.

Try switching from Opengl to Direct3d, see if that makes any difference.
