View Full Version : Time Outs on DF servers: My Idea

Right now there are no "consequences" for getting killed or shot down in DF. This encourages reckless behaviour and results in players acting in an unrealistically reckless manner.

I'd like to suggest a server-configurable setting that imposes a delay before you can fly again on a dog fight server.

*You get shot down or crash and get and killed: 6 minute delay
*You get shot down and bail into enemy territory: 6 minute delay
*You get shot down and bail into friendly territory: 5 min delay
*Crash land in friendly territory (other than base you flew from), 4 minute delay
*Crash land on base you flew from, 3 min delay
*Land safely on neutral base in friendly territory, 2 minute delay
*Safely land on base you flew from, 1 min delay
*Get vulched (shot or bombed on the apron before take off) 0 min delay

This delay would be imposed after clicking refly, right after respawning. The player would see a timer counting down and would not be able to start engine until the timer reaches zero, such as is experienced some times when a cooperative mission is starting.

Great idea. I am not sure that people would stand for a 5-minute down-time just looking at a blank screen with a timer; you could make it entertaining, however. Perhaps, allow them to external <Shift><F2> view various Friendlies (or even <Ctrl><F2> for Enemies) while waiting for the server configurable "penalty box" counter to count the seconds left. If someone exited the server and tried to rejoin before their time penalty expired, then the server would impose a ban on that player.

Being "configurable", each server could determine its own time penalty values for each play-ending event.

I would also suggest that Team Killers would be subject to a large default penalty box time on the first offense, and would be banned after the second or third offense.

For vulchees, I would not want to penalize them, but I would force them to choose a different starting airfield (if available) in order to encourage the vulcher to go away.

Why do you guys need this punishment? I mean it`s a great Idea for squad matches and such...but rather irritating for regular DF servers. And how fair would that be for newcomers? They are frustrated enough trying to get off the ground and now this?

I am sure it would bring something new and fresh into online competitions... but other then that don`t be surprise if you server will be empty after couple of days with those types of setting.

Not flaming you by all means, just expressing my opinion. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Good counterpoints. I think such an idea would only work on large capacity servers that are already very popular (i.e., had a waiting line of people clicking to get on). Otherwise, you are right. Unless there is a compelling reason to stick around, people will just fly elsewhere rather than putting up with the additional bother.

I can also imagine the other extreme where there is someone hosting two or three other players over a dialup (that was possible during IL2:Original, at least), and then a player shoots someone down. Well, if the host accepts the default time penalties as proposed, then both the shooter and victim(s) are penalized 5-minutes [EDIT: or 6 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ]because the pilot left flying has to wait for the dead/bailed player(s) to respawn so he can shoot him/them down again. It might also give vulchers time to fly to, and hover at the spawnee's preferred field.

Anyway, I admit there is a downside to such a scheme.

Same reason you need the "punishment" of Limited Ammo and Cockpit Always On /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif It would be just another option available to enhance the experience, and to reduce the "air quake" aspect of DF scripted servers. If you RTB without dying, there's no "punishment". BTW, Next time I'm on the same server as you, I'll just keep repeatedly crashing into you like a kamikaze, and then you can tell me whether or not I deserve to be punished /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Kamikaze's definitely need a penalty! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif They are so annoying, and there is no noble sacrifice involved in their bringing another plane down in IL-2.

Rather than make it a individual pilot delay, make it a team delay. Like if one player crashes and dies, the timer he sets will count down, and anyone else who crashes/dies/etc in that span of time will have the same count down.

That way people might take off together and act more as a team.
