View Full Version : proliferation of "arcade" servers?

I am getting back to playing online again and have noticed that most of the servers at HL are cockpit off, externals, padlock, map icons ect.. What happened to the full real servers? Alot of the FL servers only have one person in them. Other than VEF, its tough to find a good server anymore.I guess the majority like the arcades?

Full real isn't absolutely everything. I prefer a mix somewhere around 90% real and 10% arcade if you will http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is true that there are more...generally meaning there are lots of people who, probably being casual simmers, are playing the game. Thats good for everyone. I always see greatergreen with players and thats pretty much full real.

I agree with Ice...but im more of an 80/20% guy myself. Besides...full real (to me) is full boring. It shouldn't even be called full real...it's more like full difficulty. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif because it sure aint real. lol

I haven't been on HL recently, been busy writing an article and I've just discovered X-Plane /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif . However the last time I checked there were a couple of good servers going, look for crazyIvan (IDCserver) or Hunter82(I forget the name of the squad), Those guys run servers the way I like (PL and limited icons), best of all the guys flying are courteous and skillful. If I don't see a server I know, I always look for call-sighns of ppl that have been fun in the past.

I'm w/ you Mike, I can't stand those arcade servers. No offense to those who play less-real servers, It's just that I make up for my lack of skill w/ strategy and externals and no-cockpit totally remove that element of the game.

yeah theres only about 2-3 if lucky with full real server

greatergreen
virtual pilots 1
virtual pilots 2

Im usually in one of them im sick of padlock sky scanners and flyby view dependant pilots.

I just find full real so much more fun and makes you use tactics more, great people on comms too in them servers.

Hopefully mudmovers new dedicated server will take off padlock so we have one more choice of a good tough settings server.

But it does seem like 90% of HL and ubi users play on ez settings.

where does jimmy giro fly mostly in virtual pilots http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

and you dont need trackir to do well in full real

Well for 2 weeks i put up a server that had the following settings.

No padlock
No external views
Locked Cockpit
No map icons
Minimap on
limited ammo and fuel
and all the other stuff on.

But no one would fly on it. Everyone wanted no cockpit views, no externals, and padlock on. So i went halfway, and turn on the padlock for those who say they need it without having trackir. Still no one played. Then i turned on external, same thing. So i dunno what to say bout this settings thing. So now i just set the servers up to how i will play. And now they are not on HL. I have moved both of them to UBI because they get used there.

And as for these people saying its not full real but full difficult/boring and so forth. Who ever said that flying an aircraft in a combat situation was easy? I am not saying you cannot have your opinions, but to say that enabling those settings is unrealistic is kind of a stretch. Those settings mimic what a pilot would see when he is in cockpit, with the obvious limitations of a computer screen and our view control. You say you find it boring? Why? Because you are not dropping 4/5 planes out of the sky everytime you take off? Well, in real life, many pilots went out and returned to have not downed any Aircraft. To me its a challenge. Some people want to accept that challenge, others don't. But don't criticize someone for wanting to fly in what they may consider full real.

IF you are looking for some realistic flying, then jump into UBI and hop on either one of the |FAST| servers. I think you will have a good time.

i havent been in mastiffs in over 5 months, and you can ask him I use to fly in there alot with afj and 353. Im always greater green or virtual pilots with all the ll34s jimmygiro wuafs and others who play as a team. I was flying against you 2-3 days ago konig i remember shooting down your g2 a couple times. There was more red so I went blue and was winging with the 3 wte's in there

Hi Leadspitter. Since I spend quite some time in the greater green, I,m curious which name you fly under, or maybe we just hasnt crashed into each other yet. I agree that its a great server, and personally I like the settings even though I don,t have Track IR. However, this is a personal thing , some people like pad and external and some dont, how lucky we are then that there is a choice!

When you think about it guys, this thread is not worthy of any discussion.
What sort of point is anybody trying to make here if any?and what makes you think anything will change by complaining here about it.

After all you get the choice of which server you can take part in and be able to check the host settings before you enter the game.

What possible cause for complaint could you have ? lol!

Its simple, Host to your liking and this way you will attract like minded players. I think we hashed this out back in the IL2 days. As time passes more will go for the advanced settings. (As skills improve)

Hello http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Arcade servers are fun when you just want a "short flight" with a "long fight", Harder settings are good for when you want a "long flight" with a "small fight"!.

I fly both Ubi and HL under any settings which take my fancy, in both difficult and medium settings. It is a matter of choices for me and thier is plenty of variety available at varied times. If there is not something thier which exactly suits your needs you may be able to host yourself ?.

It's just a matter of personal choices, and you even say yourself that a lot of the FL servers only have one person !..you could join one of those.

I feel sorry for the hosts who make the efforts to game with others, who's work and help for the community may go un-noticed because they cant please every individual.

I would say there is a healthy choice available for all and its only a matter of looking at different times in as many places as you know http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

It's back and forth..just like the new trend of limited friendly icons. Its all just fun but I agree with Recon in that the sound can be a show stopper more so than any setting.

I thought I noticed that being right opposite of your observation. I clicked on about 6 to 8 servers a couple of days ago trying to find some familiar names to fly with and took notice that all but one of them were in the cockpit on setting. Seems most everything was checked except the speed bar and mini map. Strange. It's probably me. Cept I was sober. lol S!

I genuinely don't think its about skill but about challenge though, of course, if you do play full real it is very unlikely you've just started! You just progressively need more challenge as you improve and this game certainly attracts the more dedicated player so natch people will migrate toward the tougher settings. At the top end this means actually having to read the terrain below in order to navigate before even getting to the fight and outside of an organised fight between people with voice comms etc I just find it a bit tedious.

I might only have an hour to play and so I want to maximise that time on the smaller maps with a few 'luxuries' turned on /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

For me, I just LOVE my 3 second F3/F1 fly-by and being able to check damage with F2 and so tend to fly on servers that allow those views. Other than that though the only other luxury I look for is friendly tags and airfields and am happy to play the rest of the game 'for real' /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

If you must insist on "full real" go down to your local airport an take some lessons in a FULL REAL AIRPLANE. Then you will be flying full real. The day I can walk into a full 3 axis flight sim w/ partial cockpit. Is the day I will be flying YOUR "full real". Till then "full hard" is "full work" and not for me . Oh yeah if we go only in locked cockpit might as well throw away all those un-needed skins. Who needs them when u can't look at them. Probabbly improve the frame rates and ban track ir as cheating.

Rant over, tripped into gear by the accusation of arcade and Elitest attitude.

When FB was first released and for the first 3 or 4 months after I guess it was, I played constantly on the AFJ server that ran that mountain/valley (racing?) map. That was the high point for me in FB online. Great connection to the server, lots of players to fly with/against, and a map that allowed for lots of options depending on where you flew from, with some great high and low alt fighting. On quite a few nights I scored over 1000pts with ease. Yes, the server allowed for externals, padlock, icons, no cockpit. But what did that matter? FB is so flexible, it can suit any flyer's taste. I flew with cockpit on, external and padlock off, limited icons to range, and was happy as a lark. I couldn't have cared LESS what settings the other guys were using.

Last I checked, that map and setup was gone from the AFJ server. I've tried quite a few of the servers that are up on a given night, some with scripts, some with harder settings. These are nice, but often I'm one of only 3 or 4 players flying. Is it the settings? The maps? I don't know. But the fun factor for me drops off fast, especially when there's only one or two enemies, and most of the time, these guys are circling at 7,000 meters waiting for me to climb within BnZ range after takeoff.

The fact that I can fly with the settings I want, regardless of the server settings is the main reason I'll fly on arcade servers. There's just more fun for me where I can actually find a few targets, enjoy a few nice rounds, and just avoid frustration in general. I enjoy the concept of "full real" alot, and have since I got IL2 nearly two years ago. I live longer in a FR dogfight, I am (or was when I flew more often) quite a bit more competitive on a FR server, "man vs. man" as I often thought of it. And no, TrackIR doesn't bother me a bit. I'm good enough with my hatswitch that I feel no real disadvantage.

But not one bit of that matters if I'm alone in the server. There's a large number of servers at HL, some with harder settings (settings that I like!), and better pings for me, just sitting down at the bottom, with no players inside. If this game is going to survive online for me, I've got to play where the players are, no matter the settings.

Like anything else, after a while it becomes second nature. I don't find it "full hard" at all. And as others have pointed out it forces you to think and utilize tactics more. There are those of us who want as full a measure of immersion as the game can provide. We don't mind the "difficulty" of not being able to see through your a/c, not being able to fly outside your a/c, not having tracking radar or GPS. Some people want a quick arcade experiance. Fortunately for them there is a multitude of them these days online. And I agree with Mike. It's a drag for those of us who like to see FR servers that there are so few, but that's the reality of the situation.

I suggest for those who are FR fans to join in the online war scenarios. Usually everything is checked with the exception of speedbar for the sake those whose cockpit instruments are difficult to read. I'd be happy even with speedbar off since I fly LW most of the time.

Drop by our server sometime. It's not "full real" as we have friendly icons on, but most everything else is ON. We flew for a couple weeks with speedbar off and I liked it. Now I look at the instruments as much as the speedbar.

Either way it's usually full and the pilots are pretty good.

See you in the skies! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Gents...

MOH sorta likes a happy medium mix, cockpit on, no foe icons, friendly icons with ID only, padlock, minimap, speed bar.

Flying a no minimap, no speed bar game in some russian planes is tough. You cannot see the compass.

Concerning the padlock, not everyone can buy the latest and greatest video card, large monitor, track IR,and cornea transplants for old guys like me. To me padlock gives those with older systems a chance to find the enemy. It also seems like the full real games are often down on the deck close to bases because that is the only way you can find the enemy, mowing lawns with our props is not too realistic either.

Many of us have limited online time and it gets old flying for 30 minutes finally spotting a black dot and when you get close find out it is a freindly.

Even if the "arcade" options are on YOU don't have to use them.

When I set up a server I don't lock the cockpit, keep externals and p/l on but use CEM, limited fuel/ammo etc. I figure that Oleg meant this sim to be enjoyed by everyone. Let others have 'Wonder Woman' view if they want and padlock. I choose not to use them. I don't worry if other people have the 'advantage' this gives. It just makes me work harder as a pilot to overcome them.

(and....SOMEDAY....I just might! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif )

This flexibility is incredible, and seems often overlooked by many players. Almost every visual aid option is client selectable on/off if the host allows.

I find lots of FULL REAL servers over there.

im getting into full real, its VERY hard/challenging.

the nice thing though is that when i acquire a kill, its because i did it on my own. without any sort of help from icons. because none of that is there, you have to adapt to new tactics.

if they flew like this 50 yrs ago,i feel like i should too, from time to time, just to get the full understanding of what they had to experience to be an ACE.....hell even to be just a SURVIVOR......

dont get me wrong I love my ICONS...but now that i am in a full real environment, im learning to be a better jockey, without any hints. now when i do play in iconed environments, i find it easier to shoot them down, because of the lessons ive learned from FULL REAL.

if its boring , its because your NOT LOOKING!

Good point about "difficulty aids" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif being optional for client.

I have Alt+I ready to disable icons because I hate them, I think they look ugly.
However we (JG5) are a Full Real/Full Boring/Full Difficulty (Whatever /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) squad, so that's how we fly.

If you want externals - watch a track /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

But really, this elitist attitude is Bogus and self-serving. I don't personally like so-called "arcade" settings, but I'm not going to give another grief if he likes them. It's all about personal preference and comfortable skill level.

The bottom line is that you bought this sim (well you better had! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) and you can choose how to enjoy it most. If your idea of fun is lining up 16 bombers and blasting away with unlimited ammo until you kill-em-all! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Then great. If you want to stalk around using clouds, sun, terrain as cover and hunt a target without the luxury of a "radar" map or externals views then cool - whatever floats your boat /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

If you don't like the servers out there, host your own. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Have to agree with this. Full real isn't everything. When I have a server running I choose everything on real except, Take off.
The reason I remove take-off is that when I play a game, I want to fly and shoot, then bring my badly wounded bird home. By removing Take off, it stops the vulchers (if you want to do that, fine, but it irritates most of the players I have flown with), and it saves time. I usually fly for about 2-3 hours at a time when I go online, and I find that take-offs waste minutes I could be dogfighting. If I want to fly it like a complete sim, I fly offline campaigns and single player missions. But if you read this thread, I actually have most real set on, just not the time wasting T/O. That is my oppinion, but if we were all the same, it would be very boring...lol.

Mike Ive said this before and Ill say it again......

Its Not Arcade Open Pit is more realistic View wise than closed pit....

The fact of the mater is you can look around and see LOTS more in the Cockpit of an AC than you can ever see in FB Pit only Mode.

As for Padlock I hate it

We use Limited Icons (custom distances) or none at all

and allow the use of externals...

I fly bolth Full hardness & less hardness servers & like bolth for there differant difficulty levels, there are plenty of full real servers & I see them with 30 People in them now since the DS.exe release & Update

I wish more Hosts would setup non full hardness servers on DS.exe

Seems all the realy good Server Admins are more into Full Hard (no visability) servers...

Sure closed pit is great for thoes who have TRKIR but its a lil rough for the others.... Keep that in mind

Choice is a good thing; this is an game. No matter which server, I never once passed out on the floor due to Positive "G" effects. Nor have I have been treated of gunshot wounds, burned flesh, or airsickness. Yet I have suffered many "virtual deaths" and have inflicted a few to others.
Perhaps create a server for your nitche of flyers you prefer to cater to? Many of great tools out there, and the old saying goes; "If you want to do things right do it yourself"

Here we go again ! every couple of months we get someone crying about the servers ,"There not Hard enough for me " " I dont want the cockpit off " " I dont want unlimited ammo " Wha Wha Wha ! - SHUT UP AND HOST YOUR OWN GAME THEN!

there is no easy and hard, on cogpit off externals etc u cant expoect it to be easy, because the guys you are flying against are going to have exactly those same advantages, it comes down to who can manover his plane the best.

With full real or what ever u cant expect it to be any harder or easyer, tho u cant see very much at all and have to guess diflection shots so do yr enemys alot of the time u can just sneak up behind them and down them before they blink, or just run away from the fight.

As for TackIR, I don't have one, but I have "poor man trackir": optical wheeled mouse, wheel mapped to throttle while joy throttle mapped to prop pitch. After while I feel very free with my view options in every pit. And I don't thing that FR is actually harder then it was in RL. Don't forget we are not subjected to G forces at all, most would puke all over place while maneouvring so violenly as seen on any online server..

- Arcade servers are fun when you just want a "short
- flight" with a "long fight", Harder settings are
- good for when you want a "long flight" with a "small
- fight"!.

- I fly both Ubi and HL under any settings which take
- my fancy, in both difficult and medium settings. It
- is a matter of choices for me and thier is plenty of
- variety available at varied times.

yep - i don't always have the luxury of having the time it takes to fly a "FR" game and have sufficient "engagements" to make it worthwhile - if i can only spare half an hour or so then i will chose a server with more difficulty settings off - in order to have more combat during my time online - sort of "instant gratification" if you will. When i have more time i will pick a FR server.

although there may be far to few FR servers on UBI - where i fly - it is definitely good to have several choices available

horses for courses basically.
