i would love to know how the progress is on the second nav/air scope? the dev team stated that we will get we will get besides the attack scope a nav/air scope . i would love to see some of this in screen-shots.

it is the attack scope that we have been waiting for ....not the nav/sky scope if I am correct.

How about some fold-down handles on each periscope?

Leif...

There are no fold down handles on a type VII attack scope.

no you are not correct . if you look at the screenshots its the attack scope thats has been raised all the time . the nav scope in the front is not functional . in the current version of sh-3 the attack scope is in the controll room while in should be in the conning tower .

I still hope this Periscope thing will be corrected by the DEV team, but that would make it necessary to build a conning tower interior.

A correction of the radio-captains-cabin-messroom-section would be nice also!

But hey... the DEV team stressed the word "realism" so much http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Mhm, I thougt that the conning tower is already part of the interior...

Voyager is correct, it is already modeled
its in the game play video with the ice berg
why they didn't model both scopes when they have the conning tower already done is just beyond me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
its like waiting till the alpha phase to ask the consumer what they want

the devs have made some mistakes in the past, but seem dedicated to setting it all right, which is admirable http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

anyway the new VIIB/C screenshots never show the nav scope raised , or anything that indicates that there working on it.

Yes...what is the deal with a second scope? I just finshed reading the thread on this subject and immediately watched the iceberg scene in the video. I see that we have a conning tower interior, but I don't see any scopes in that compartment.

Are we going to have two scopes or not? If yes, will they actualy be in the correct compartment and also be functional?

@ Voyager532

I did not see the INTERIOR of the conning tower yet. This should be the room where the Attack-Periscope is located!

The Scope that should be up there is down in the Zentrale right now, where it does not belong!

According to the new subsim preview the attack-scope will finally find its way, where it belong: <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> For the first time you can enter the conning tower and man the attack scope (which in this build was the same as the navigational scope). <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
I hope they build this large cylinder into the Zentrale, which functions as the homing of the attack-scope!

(which in this build was the same as the navigational scope).

I take that to mean that there is no difference between the two??? So they model both, but they are the same?? this doesent make sense to me.....someone elaborate if they have any info on this, please!

maybe "this build" is what they consider to this point in production....so maybe there is hope for this?

The place to keep an eye on for more info is over at the SubSim SH3 Forum. Quite a few questions are being asked there about the demo played. What was in it, what wasn't.
Apparently, the 'build' they had was missing quite a lot of things that are still being worked on. I would think that even though the two scopes were the same type, it's only because they haven't finished the second scope yet, but they put where it's going to be with the first, since they have that one done. Seems like a reasonable explanation to me.(I think)

Yes, with €build€ they mean the version they where trying out. A large program like a simulator consists of a truckload of different files. The actual executable code is €œbuilt€ from these files. So each time they make a change in the source code and want to test the new modification they have to build the executable.

So I take it as the build they where testing didn€t have the code for the second scope finished, but instead of no second scope at all they slammed a copy of the first scope in place.

I did not know that in the Type IX, both the attack and observation periscope were both in the conning tower.

how was the nav scope used? i mean was it used to spot the north star to determine position? being a amateur astronomer, i'd love to make use of this feature.. what was the magnification level of such a scope? i can't seem to find any details about it on the net. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I watched the videos last night...all of them. I did not see any exterior scopes greater than 1-scope. On the interior, I only saw one scope what I presume to be the attack scope because of the gradiated lens.

Any comments here? How many scopes should we have? Where are they?

11.(martes86): Will you add the two periscopes (coning tower and vessel command) and if you do, fully accessible?
(Devteam): SH3 will feature both the attack periscope and the observation periscope, each with its own characteristics (stealth, zoom level, field of view, light sensitivity and instruments).

(RedTerex): Will the player be able to 'walk' around inside the U-boat or will he be fixed?
(SH3DevTeam): Yes, the player will be able to walk around the boat, in certain locations: the command room, the radio/sonar room, the conning tower, the bridge. However, to be really efficient in controlling the boat, you will need to "jump" from station to station.

God, I just hope that they get the Nav scope in front of the conning tower ladder where it belongs, by the depth controlls! There is currently NO nav scope in all the type VII screens ive seen. That scope poking down behind the conning tower ladder disturbs me and fill me with a sense of dread! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Bear with me, but how many scopes did U-boats(VII,IX,etc.) have and what was the difference between the different scope types? I know "Nav" scopes were used for navigating and "attack" scopes for attacking of course, but how were they different? What is the scope that we always famously see protruding out of the water from a submerged sub?

To necrobaron, I can only say as far as I know that the attack periscope is much more difficult to see (that is, stealthier), and the nav periscope is appropiate for searching for planes too.

Anyone know how the sky periscope works? I can't find any references to it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
how was it used? at what depth could the scope be used? did it have a wide angle view? how was it used for navigation? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
anyone got any pointers or reference i can look at??

Well, if they confirmed it, they'll have a hell of a lot of explaining to do if it isn't there and I doubt their career as a dev team will survive if they cannot keep their promises.
btw, where has the walking feature been confirmed? I want to see this for my own eyes. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hi Leif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

...i think it could be possible to have a free moving cam working indside the boat, some screens are made with it. The bad thing will be, that it wouldn`t be possible to open the hatches to enter the tower/bridge/radioroom for looking/walking inside and so on. It would be great if you could see your crew running across the command-room while crash-diving...
