Been thinking about the Mustang and the role as an escort fighter. The niche the Mustang held as a long range escort fighter was preeminent only for a very brief period of history.

The days of hundreds of bombers and masses of escort fighters battling their way through heavy defences, will hopefully never be seen again. Had the War in the Pacific not been ended by the A-bomb, it was my understanding that the Twin Mustang was being groomed for the escort role of the B-29. When the Soviets copied the B-29 as the Tu-4, what plane do you think they planned (if any) as an escort fighter?

What I am really asking any one who cares to participate is, what plane do you think that the Soviets planed on using as an escort to this plane, if any? Maybe they exclusively wanted the Tu-4 to operate a a truck for nuclear weapons.

The greedy engines of jet fighters probably killed the long-range escort role. Bombers went very high post-war to the limit of single-engine fighter performance. The SAM forced them down onto the deck. The USAF played with bombers carrying their own escorts (the Goblin). If I am not mistaken, the Voodoo, F-101, was intended to be a bomber escort. Don't know what ideas the Sovs had on the matter.

La-11 was the post war Soviet longe range escort fighter, but not in the Class of F-82.

F-84E and swept wing F-84F were the standard long range escort fighters for SAC in the early 1950s.

In 1948 the decision was made to establish an air force base near the North Pole. This was the only place to base Tu-4 Bulls so they could reach their targets deep in USA territory. Lavochkin fighters were intended to provide an air defense as well as to prevent American aircraft activity in this region. The support was provided by Li-2s of the 650th Transport Regiment, C-47s of the 1st Transport Regiment, and llyushin ll-12s of the 708th Transport Regiment. A Tupolev Tu-6 (the reconnaissance version of the Tu-2) would be employed as a pathfinder/leader aircraft. On 7 May 1948 one Tu-6 and three La-1 Is landed at the ice airstrip near the North Pole and the next day they flew several training missions from the unusual base. Several such expeditions were carried out by the fighters of the 1st Fighter Division and 53rd Fighter Regiment. </span>
