Months ago, I posted a similar question and of the many suggestions I came up with Hidden and Dangerous 2. I love that game. Didn't like Call of Duty or Far Cry nearly as much.

H&D2 is considered a "tactical squad based" shooter. I am looking for something similar that is strategy/stealth oriented. I like WW2 or sci-fci, but it doesn't really matter. I like H&D2 because:

You have to think and strategize.
Great settings and atmosphere of tension and suspense.
Interesting missions
Open-ended and flexible, not linear and scripted
Squad based

So I am looking for something similar. I have heard operation flashpoint and black hawk down team sabre are good. Also wondering about Half Life 2 and Red Ochestra. PS, I have already pre-ordered the H&D2 expansion pack.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Ghost Recon would be closest to H&D2 of those that I've tried. Not WW2, but small unit tactical with a fair stealth element in the offline play.

If you want the stealth aspect, you should try Splinter Cell or Hitman2.

Half-Life 2 will be released in 2023 and Doom 3 is exactly the same as Doom with much better graphics. AI is not very I which makes it quite boring.

Unfortunately the IL-2 series has made all fps games seem dull & repetitive for me so I'm not much help I'm afraid http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I would suggest DOOM3...however, all i've done so far is blast a load of freaky zombies and Demons, run out of ammo for the decent guns, i'm now left with a peashooter and a flashlight...i'm cowering in a dark room scared stiff to move http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif...its SCARY!...oh and although the graphics are stunning 80% of the game is in near total darkness...HUH!...wasat about http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

I'm the same as the above poster...Oleg is controlling me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif...theres a H&D3 coming out , also have you played Medal of Honour?...if so theres a new one coming out soon i think its Pacific, but not to sure...havent got my PC gamers mag with me, will post as and when i find out...but its approaching Xmas so there'll be a load coming out http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Get Operation Flashpoint GOTY. It's way more than a shooter. You'll have tactics, command, vehicles (jeeps, tanks, choppers) and some very good SP campaigns. Not to mention the really powerful editor... and there are quite some mods already with WW2 stuff.

Hλ² should ship after the lates news I heard:
Nov 23rd US
Nov 26th EU
Just get it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Nobody mentioned Brothers in Arms (http://www.brothersinarmsgame.com/teaser/index.php)...I'm looking forward to that one. You might want to check it out cos' it'll have some elements of being a tactical shooter. They say it's a hybrid of Full Spectrum Warrior's tactical squad control from a fps perspective. I say it's Rainbow 6 with on-demand fire & movement control...with a WWII D-Day/Band of Brothers setting.

And as for Doom3...overhyped. Beautiful, I'll give you that, but same old recipe gets tedious, especially the dim-lighting. What? These hitech marines can't get NVGs or at least a flashlight duct-taped to their guns? Stupid...for the sake of being scary.

OH YES!...cant wait for Half Life II....however PF is looking great, cant wait to try out crashing into Aircraft carri...er..landing ON carriers http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I believe theres a WWII Mod for Battlefield Vietnam(i've got BF/v but im not keen on it)...and also a WWI Mod for BF 1942, although both arcade, BF1942 is great fun, but only online(SP is for getting the gist of it)

I'm slowly going off these speed freak FPS, but do enjoy the slower paced tactical FPS/games

That was the one i was trying to remember Bucketrider..Brothers in Arms looks brilliant, i'll definately try this out

I liked Thief III for the stealth aspect.

You may also want to check out Star Wars Knights of the old Republic. While this is more of a role-playing game than shooter, it has more action than any role-playing game I've ever played. plus elements of strategy, open-ended plot, and a brilliant story-line. It's more cerebral and immersive than most games, and by what you said about H&D, you may like it.

Operation Flashpoint is a must, just make sure it includes the Resistance addon. If you get it you will definately want to go get some of the mods for it. I strongly recommend FDF v1.3, CSLA 2 and Invasion 1944 mods. The game is of the same generation as IL2 v1.0 so its graphics are starting to show their age. However the mods listed above greatly improve the graphics and sound. The AI is simply brilliant in OFP, it is by far the most realistic AI out there in any game. Another good one that I came across at the cheap rack was Hitman 2, best $10 game I ever bought lol. There is no team aspect to it and it isn't even slightly realistic, but it is very entertaining none the less. Like Far Cry it can be played with multiple styles, you can either do the guns blazing thing and waste everyone in sight or you can do the stealthy thing and strangle only your target. It has no multiplayer capability but it doesn't need it, SP in that game kicks *ss. I recommend staying away from Rainbow six 3 and anything in the Delta Force lineup. Rainbow Six 3 has by far the worst AI I have ever encountered in an FPS. The Delta Force series is simply ****, it's rediculously easy to beat and it still has the Delta Force trademark of 1 shot in the toe = KIA for all bad guys.

The following are more visceral FPSs coming out:

1) Men of Valor - takes place during the Vietnam era - very interesting and brutal setting. Graphics are amazing and run on very reasonable computer specs. Very good rendering with realistic looking backgrounds and character graphics that lend well to the Vietnam theme.

No squad based play and pretty scripted in the single-player mode. However, online play is very fun with a good balance of hit damage and weapon power. Free download available on Gamespot for the online multiplayer version - I've spent way too much time playing this lately (can't fly a p47 anymore!).

2) Medal of Honor: Pacific - coming out for the PC. Pseudo-squad based play, but typical MOH stuff - very scripted, outrageous hit damage allowed, and lame character graphics. However, the maps are beautiful and are complete islands where you can roam around without any restriction. Online play may be the way to go with this one, but again, players absorb way too much damage.

What he said.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. looks like the best. My guess is it will be better than HL2 but time will tell. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will feature a very open play mode, a large map to play on, interactive objects, driveable vehicles and from what I've seen so far, one of the highest "I's" for the AI. Looks very promising.

Doom 3 sort of dissapointed me. Graphics and gameplay are a charm. It works quite well on a R9800Pro. But the game is too friggin dark! I can't understand why mr Carmack didn't include night vision goggles or why one can't use a flashlight and a gun at the same time. It's plain silly! So, as a game, Far Cry is a much better game, and you can use stealthy approach if you choose to do so, or knock out enemies from long range with sniper rifle or a rocket launcher. It even has night vision goggles, for crying out loud!

If you want a good but old game, try SWAT 3. It involves plenty of stealth and the objective is to arrest, not to kill. There are also fairly complex missions. Try it.

2 more oldies that were fun but I couldn't get very far with are Deadly Dozen and Deadly Dozen Pacific. They both frustrated the hell out of me as you had to be very stealthy as AI was very good. You control the squads but it's still a FPS. Graphics were dated a bit but they weren't all that bad.

Well I like you have been running through H&D2 and I recently found out that they have released an expansion pack 'Sabre Squadron' 9 new levels of single player goodness and they have (at last) reintroduced the online coop mode of the origional game. I have yet to try it online but I find coop much more rewarding and sociable (there is a word I wouldnt have thought of using in a description of an FPS until recently)

So I would suggest you snag SABRE SQUADRON expansion pack that is if you haven't already

Vietcong also in terms of multiplayer beats a lot of the FPS out there for me simply because it has a coop mode.

The only thing lacking in H&D2 now is a mission editor.

Moh and CoD single player were fun (COD left me with shell shock for a bit). But these two as an online experiance have little to offer or improve on what was already out there in terms of game play.

My fingers are crossed for a mission editor for H&D2 and who knows in the future a H&D3

Mafia now that was a game I can honestly say I did enjoy (not technicaly an FPS) great story good plot and reasonable graphics and set in a great time period.

Not sure I would call any FPS a simulation though mainly as you can't plant your boot in the guys face / chest / nutz but I would say H&D and OFP are good tactical simulations (seem to remember reading that the OFP has been developed further to aid in real military tactical training excercises for its officers)

man MAFIA finished way too quick for me

they do the robbery & then he runs for the cops & its game over heres your final CGI scene

i wanted to have some "fight for control" missions but noooooooo

they have you tail between your legs off to the Coppa who dont want to know

but yea , asides from that its a classy Checkoslovakian game ( who would have thought some guys from the check republic could do such a good job at replicating 1930's Chicago !)

A good product always leaves you begging for more hehe only down side to both Mafia and H&D was that there is no mission editor (and in the case of mafia an online playable version would have kept things going for me )

Still I hear a rumour that Mafia 2 may be in the pipeline but don't quote me on that one.

America's Army sounds right up your ally, and it's free.

If not that, try Rainbow Six series (Raven Shield is the Latest, and it's not half bad)

Also, you MIGHT like KillSwitch. It's kinda arcadey, but you have to think about your next move or else you'll get shot up. DFBHD and Joint Operations are good if played with clans and stuff, but just by yourself they're pretty basic.

If you like third person shooters a lot, Line of Sight: Vietnam would be a good one. the best game I've played by JoWood's creators.

Mafia is probably the game I would say is the best ever for PC, taken all around.

It is very slick and immersive. The only things I could see that they got wrong was

1) Everyone's drinking in a bar on a main street during Prohibition, when any fool flatfoot could look through the window and see you swilling the local rotgut, and the place even says "Salieri's Bar" during prohibition.

2) the cigarettes wouldn't have filters under any circumstances

Those are the only two things that are mistakes as far as I can see. The game is even anti-politically correct, gotta love it. Run out and get it if you don't have it folks
