The sonar man everytime i ask him to give me the distance of a ship he says there is no ship targeted. How do i get a ship targeted so the sonar guy can give me the distance?

This a big question i have been searching all over to find a answer. Can someone explain the best way to attack a ship at night? How can i torpedo a ship i cannt see with the perascope. I have no idea how to do it at night.

Sorry for the newbie questions any info would be great thanks

To get the sonarman to ping the target for range, you need to have the hydrophone (H) needle pointing at the target so that its name (warship, merchant or unknown) appears in the notepad in the top right of the hydrophone screen.

Night attacks are harder. Get closer so that you can see the target.

Try and attack when the moon is up, preferably behind you.

Use the 'recognition manual/notepad' low contrast mod to minimise the glare or cover them with your hand.

You could also try and do your own plots on the map using hydrophone information to get a solution (harder). For ultra hard you could try and count the number of revolutions of the ships screws and make a table of revolutions versus speed. Not sure if it would work but I understand it was done in reality.

Also when at the Sonarmans station, pan down slightly and you will see the 'ping' button on the left also you can adjust the volume of the hyrdaphone, on the righthand side of the wheel are the volume buttons.

"if he can see it he can ping it "

Sorry for the newbie questions any info would be great thanks

well heres a tip for the night: don't bother staying under water. do a quick survey and find out if any escorts or destroyers are nearby. (95% of the time there is destroyers). ok next step surface. its night and unless your REALLY close they won't hear you, the noise from all the other ships makes it almost impossilbe to detect another one. get close, and aim the bow up with the ship and FIRE. but when they see you dive and shut down your engines for awile and then after they leave go the other way and surface for more speed. always works! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

THANKS EVERYONE!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I got my first kill at night. They never knew what hit them. Thanks for the help everyone it really helped. I mean i was so happy i want to grab my weapons officer and kiss him. He did a wonderful job http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Now i just need to learn how to get distance speed AoB better and play with TDC.
I have been getting the info myself then seeing how close i am by letting the weapons officer do it.

Hey in real life did the Captian enter the info he gets (speed distance and AoB) and put it in the TDC or does a officer do it? I guess im asking for is what the captian did and did not do in real life. Reason why i ask is i would like to do this game as real as posible some day when i get better at it.

Thanks again.
