I've only been playing for a month, but I thought only neutral or friendly passenger liners gave you negative renown. I sunk an enemy liner on my last patrol & it definitely doesn't seem to have hurt my renown. Ended up with a personal best (tonnage and renown), thanks mostly to that liner, I think.

Neutrals give you negative renown. Friends give you negative renown per 10. Enemies give you positive renown. So you can sink anything and get renown, as long as is an enemy ship.

I don't know what mods you are running, however, in my game Liners become valid targets in Dec 39 as long as they don't belong to neutral countries.

just make sure it's a British ship and you can sink it without worrying about your renown, liner or not.
