View Full Version : New ground objects

Do you guys reckon we need some more ground objects? I do. Definitely some troops, some axis AA mounted vehicle, like the US M-16 i think its called in the FMB.

With the troop unit, one way would be to:
For example, the mortar team consists of 3 people. You could bunch the human models togther, so they all react together with the same animations. If you shoot them enough, they all die at once. This would look good for strafing runs. A group of say, 3 10 man teams (sections, with rifles, infantry equipment etc.) would be bunched into a larger group to make a platoon of soldiers. A suitable icon could be made for these, and, like vehicle columns, the icon would disappear of the map when all the sections are killed. When they run from your bullets, the running pilot animation could be used, just with them carrying a rifle, etc.

That wouldn't be to hard, would it?

Something like this?
Edit: i've also noticed that the "soldiers" object is quite invulnerable to any weapons except bomnbs/rockets. 20mm shells won't even screatch them. I know that life on the frontline would have made anyone a tough person, but a a 20mm round should cause damage to human skin. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

The problem I think is lack of human animations, and the amount of processing power needed to play them all on trigger. At the moment, they have a running animation (basically reusing the animation of the pilot running from his plane). There'd have to be a marching animation, and a separate animation for running and diving with a rifle. Not to mention an extra algorithm to cover the way and direction of scatter when the platoon ducks for cover.

Not impossible, but a bit of work - perhaps some 3DStudio Max wizz out there could do the animations?

It'd be fun, but not incredibly realistic - our Aussie troops (as you said, 30 man platoons) in new guinea didn't march around in lines, for example. We'd developed the basics of the staggered, cover to cover counter-guerilla movements that served us so well in 'nam. Japanese troops probably would have, and from what I remember the Yanks wandered around in big bloody batallions, which is going to be a massive frame rate hit.

The mortar team would be pretty easy to implement, though - and you wouldn't even have to add any animations.

In the Battle Over Europe add-on you get a fair few extra ground objects - concrete bunkers, sandbag positions, etc, and that was entirely 3rd party, so it mustn't be impossible to get these things added to the game.

So, money where your mouth is, mate. I could probably whack together a pretty decent mortar position in Studio Max, but I texture like a blind interior decorator. Know anyone?

I think the bunkers and sandbags camed with patch 1.22, when we first got the Zero and the Mustang. The concrete bunkers are also present on the Normandy map. Don't have BoE, but AFAIK, that was a 3rd party pack, with no contribution from 1:c and thus i don't think they could have added anything except missions and skins, as long as the game code is closed.

Ahhh, rightio then. Nah, can't do anythign with Studio Max, and don't know anyone. Sorry to be of no use http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif, but I'm sure there would be SOMEONE with talent around these forums....

Ground troops and horsedrawn vehicles will not be added to the sim. Maddox first mentioned this about 2 years ago.

there is a mortar team. I sometimes place them next to a gun crew on my missions to make it look like people manning guns.
