In Silent Hunter III (which I played yesterday for 12 hours straight!), you have to make sure that the torpedoes hit the target at 90 degress against the hull. IF you hit the hull with the torpedo at say 107 degress angle to the hull, it will only bounce off http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Is this the bitter truth, was it that hard in WWII??

As far as I knew they were more likely to dud if they hit at 90 degrees. The reason its bouncing off is because its a dud. The firing pin is faulty on german torps and doesnt always "pop" the explosives.

As i said though from my readings this most often happened with "perfect" 90 degree shots, the pin was more likely to work at more acute angles.

well, I´ve benn firing quite alot of torpedoes in this game now. And same problem everytime. 90 degree to bow hit, explodes every time. some angle= Bounce!! I´m not kidding...

To hit a ship who is coming directly towards you (always used this tactic in SH2 against destroyers!), will not work anymore. Just bounce and sink to bottom of the ocean http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I just tried the game with dud torpedoes set off. THEN I could hit a detroyer charging at me!! Hmmmm... a little to much duds in the game when dud torp edoes allowed maybe?? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Yeah Im finding the same thing...
I shot of all 5, all five hit, , only 1 exploded.
They really should be the exception...
Mind you, i did select the torpedos which apparently have problems... just the other ones are so visible from above the water...

From what i know dud torpedoes were a big concern for the Uboot force at the beginning of the war.
Can you select different types of torpedoes within the game?.
