I was flying alone at a server.

It was very smooth, no stutters at all.
After 15 minutes somebody came. And it cause
one big stutter. After he took a plane playing
was again smooth as silk.

Then there came a third player, again
a big stutter.

I think that people don`t untick download skin. That
causes the stutters i think.

Skin download is the devil.

It's a shame the host can't ban it from his own server.

It's also pretty sad I have to download other ppl's Osama Bin Laden pilot faces and whacko logos even with the skin download off.

People joining will cause lag no matter what though.

You are right RBJ, but people want their individualism so we have to live with it.

And yes I have finally taken to using a skin on my 190A9. Purely for cosmetic purposes /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Skin download is a big problem. I don't use it. Still, I believe that since V1.11 when the host disables skin download that it disables all clients also. Of course, pilots and logos are still transfered no matter the setting.

It's not the only reason for stutters. Otherwise there would be no stutters offline.

Dogfight hosts still need to put static planes on map, to match the planes available, right?

So if hosts don't have the matching planes, then every time someone joins, and selects a plane, there will be a pause in the game.

This hasn't changed from the early days of IL2, has it?

It isn't just skins, but the planes themselves, which if missing, will cause pauses.

If you see those pilot faces, then you are in the Noob servers /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Anyways, These skins that causes the lag, was in the very first FB an issue. Everyone would have a nice ping of about 150 and yet, the game would stutter. They fixed it. I would very much like to see other ppl's wonderfull creations so, switched skind download on again.

Reasons I understand for the stutters is:

-Massive FPU action with the CPU, lotsa math to calculate. 1.7GHZ req.
-Throughput of computer, buss speed, ram speed, FSB of processor. Need at least a 266 Mhz buss speed.
-Audio card. Nothing good yet, audigy is OK for now.
-AGP X2 or less won't cut it, AGPX4 or more.
-512 MB ram or more, 1 GB would be nice.

I do find a big change when the sound is off and I take out my sound card, I have a SB Live 5.1 and had problems so I uninstalled it and pulled it out of the computer, thought I would try some games without it and found massive FPS increase . No good without sound but it seems that the audio hardware hasn't kept up with the video hardware, since most cards are PCI and run at 15 MHZ, where as a good video card has 300-400 mhz speed, mind you there is way more colour and pixels than sound but still bigger jumps in video technology than sound lately.

If you haven't got a 2 GHZ, 266 MHZ system with at least a 64 MB 4X AGP card then forget it, you'll be like me, stutter all the time.

its from model and lods loading up, pettergul has discovered if he hides one of everymodel on the map you get no studders because all the models are preloaded,

as for skin dls if the host has them clicked off they are off for all players.

there is no way to disable regiment and pilotskin dls

skins dls dont cause pauses but slight warp then its done with.

The cause of stutters has absolutly nothing to do with skin download. The problem is loading new textures and shapes. Custom skins do increase the number of new textures that must be loaded, but the planes themselves cause the biggest stutter. If you fly offline and a plane, tank, truck, tree, house or whatever else there might be in the mission spawns after you do, then you will have a stutter. The size of the stutter will depend on how detailed that object is. If there is an absolutly identical object already in the mission then there will not be a stutter because the geometry and textures are already loaded. This is why many mission builders place atleast one static aircraft of each type in the mission. This greatly reduces spawn stutters because the geometry and textures are already loaded. However if someone uses a custom skin, or even a slight variation (such as a different unit insignia or plane number) then there will be a stutter for the textures. End result is you cannot remove stutters from DF servers no matter what you do. But you can reduce them by placing static aircraft. Turning off skin download really doesn't help. I have tried it numorous times and it just doesn't do anything other than suck out some of the eye candy.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

reasons for lag ... warp ... stutters : .....

Host Computer power

host connection speed

client computer power

client connection speed

ppl spawning

lots of objects in map

lots of AAA in map ( i think we can agree that AAA is not a sure fire protection against Vultching , ) AAA causes major processing of info = slowdown

really bad pings

& of course having skin DL on is an additional load on ya Bandwidth

hitting printscreen

lots of ppl in one room

Thanks Major....
I am sick of servers that force you to use the boring, ugly, and usually incorrect default skins.

I also think that ground details and textures have a LARGE influence on gameplay. DFs over large ocean areas are always smoother than over land masses, regardless of skins.

Yes it does, but it's not the only thing.
When someone joins the server using a different plane, your machine has to go to your hard disk to load the plane 3D model. That causes a pause. It also has to spend time setting up the new plane location, speed and orientation which means a short burst of heavy netcode, that also causes a brief pause. It all adds up.
