View Full Version : Nightwitches

What I would love to see added to a patch at some point is the Polikarpov Po-2 biplane, a more or less unarmed crop duster.

I could have sworn I saw one parked on a runway at one point, but it was the fancy kind with a rear-mounted machine gun.

My interest is purely selfish. I know that if I told my girlfriend that IL-2 included missions for the nightwitches, she'd probably want to learn to fly.

The plane, of course, should come with several different loadouts: my favorite is a couple of small calibre bombs and no machine guns.

I've recently read german and russian descriptions of some of the nightwitches' raids. The russian accounts talk about turning the engines off and gliding in to drop bombs in near-silence (except for the wind whistling through the wire struts of the aircraft). The german accounts mention the distinctive sound the aircraft made as it approached, and how you always knew when you were about to be attacked because you would hear that the engines had just been turned off.

That aircraft is in the game as AI only. It's called the U-2VS. There are even female pilot images for it.

There were U-2 cockpit model pics floating around a Russian site, made in Russia (I think) for FB. But, it seems to have never made it into the sim. Sad really, as the Hristo-ically older in time and lesser performance aircraft are in FB, the more pure fun they are to fly.

Sad really

Indeed http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif Too much of that d**k-swinging, high-perf, high-armament (read: boring) junk in this sim already and all too few c**p-planes... it's not fair is what I say http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

A nightwitch campaign would be great fun, I've read up on them and they truly were heroines who devised some brilliant tactics to harrass the German troops using inadequate equipment. A campaign featuring low performance biplanes would be great - I'd love to have seen a Swordish campaign too, alas it's too late now....

Rumour has it that the Po-2 is being done (as flyable presumably) for RRG's 'un-named title' based on the SoW engine.

I was at work on this project for a very long time. Unfortunately, the model seems to have disappeared and there didn't seem to be a large enough fanbase surrounding it to get the plane in anyway.

I've studied the 46 GvNBAP for a few years now. They're an awesome group, as well as the other squadrons of women they trained with at Engels. For now, we can only hope to watch their engagements through AI. But that still doesn't mean you can't play as the 586 IAP with Yaks or the 125th GvBAP in Pe-2's.

BTW Amanuensis2007, the Po-2/U-2VS wasn't just a crop duster. It served as a Scout plane/light transport/mail carrier/medical evac aircraft/night bomber/ground support aircraft/supply plane/basic trainer/etc... The plane was in use until the end of the Korean War, where it still had amazing success against UN forces as a night bomber.

Oh, and just for the hell of it, here are some shots of a 46 GvNBAP mission I made a few years back:

Many thanks your reply, PBNA-Boosher. The more I learn about the women who flew those planes, the more impressed I am. There's a women's history project in there somewhere that I doubt will get done by a woman historian because it involves an interest in 'guy stuff'.

Nice screenshots, especially the second one. Did this come from a mod you were working on?

Careful M8, Billfish will come over here and give you a beating with her frying pan.

BTW: I did some nice hires skins for it. Just check my skin site

This is completely unrelated, but can you make a high resolution mod of double railway tracks and their roadbed seen directly from above?

I play (and sometimes mod) Combat Mission, and one of the problems I have never been able to solve is the twin-track problem. There are many nice high resolution single track mods, but only one and a half not very good low resolution double track mods. I've tried my hand at it, but have always stumbled when I realized that I needed to draw four perfectly concentric sets of five pixel-width circles (each rail can be represented by five diferently colored lines of pixels). The main technical constraint is that the pair of tracks can be no wider than a certain width in straight sections because of bridge crossings (i.e. they can't be wider than the bridge they cross).

If you can solve this for me (or help me solve it), I'll add your name to the list for accelerated canonization.

I have no idea what you're asking for specifically, can you clarify a bit better?
