View Full Version : Maybe I'm slow, but why do I need to buy the platinum DVD?

03-16-2006, 05:15 AM
Is there something on it that is new or different?

03-16-2006, 05:18 AM
No. If you have it all allready, you don't need to buy it. But at least I am very happy to advertise this to all my friends, so some of them might join us.

Not all people on this planet are IL2-Veterans. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

i have all the cd's also (somewhere...i just moved) but i'll be purchasing the dvd just to support the cause (as was already mentioned in another thread).

hey, good stuff maynard!

I want a backup. A single DVD backup is more convenient than 5 CD's

With all of the empty or underpopulated servers, it's pretty obvious that we need a crop of new players. As I mentioned in the other thread, I'd like to get my brother to try the game. But the idea of trying to get him to install all of those CDs (and patches) made me realize it would never happen. If it isn't simple, he'd never get around to it. Now I can just buy one disk, and he'll be able to install it painlessly.

This will also help get other fresh blood interested. Those of us who've been playing since the original IL2 aren't bothered by the complicated install. But it is an unnecessary obstacle to attracting new players. And we need new players.

03-16-2006, 08:18 AM
It took me months to find FB in the shops after I bought PF (for some reason PC World had loads of copies of AEP).

The complicated install is a bit of a pain, and I guess if you were coming into it now the patches would be a drag, but the real show-stopper until the dvd comes out is simply finding copies of all 3 games...

I agree...for that reason I'll buy it. And it's a heck of alot easier to reinstall when you need to.

03-16-2006, 09:42 AM
Its a great idea to release the DVD, such amazing value for money. Can you imagine not having played any of the series and then sudennly getting your hands on that DVD for birthday or christmas? WOW. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

03-16-2006, 09:45 AM
Easier for new people to get hang of it...and I´m gonna buy it for same reason as Tully.

03-16-2006, 09:51 AM
Like Capt Frank I'm buying it to support the cause. That is my primary reason for purchasing it however, as the DVD will likely not come out of the box for a long, long time, if ever.

And like Tully, I need a convenient backup, but I'll go through "the process" before opening the box simply so that it stays well kept. I'll open it only if I have no other way available for installation.

03-16-2006, 10:04 AM
Some of my reasons have been mentioned already ( show support and as a thank you to Oleg, convenience of having 1 DVD as a backup instead of 5 or so CDs), but in addition as a DGEN user also, I'm hoping the latest version of the dynamic campaign will be included in an official product and which would be installed along with the rest of the game, compared to the complicated process of the post-4.04 DGEN installation.

i have not reinstalled the game ever. i want too but my disks are scratched.

Why? That's a good question. For those who are comfortable with the current crop (and associated installation process) of the existing stages (i.e. FB, AEP, PF) of this sim it's not a big deal, but as has already been stated, the additional new blood that can potentially be brought into our obscure world will be good to have. Not to mention the seemingly daunting task of the 'patch' process than they will be able to forego.

It would be nice if it coincided with some new content, but then we're faced with online compatibility problems. I have a couple friends that have expressed a desire to delve into it as a result of my endless diatribes and aeronautical exploits. More than one has said they couldn't find one part or another due to limited availability on store shelves.

Like a few previous posters, I'll buy a DVD and likely pay forward my existing copies.

While you or others don't need it, some may want it.

That said, you'l have two way the need against the want to figure out the distance between the to and pint point the exact location of the known, unknown, have.

I would say there isn't a need to buy the forthcoming DVD for anyone who has everything uptdated and current, and doesn't mind sorting his/her own collection of original disks+patches/updates for backups.

However, for the sake of less typing (and for what it may be worth), allow me to quote what I posted in reply to very much the same question in another thread, as my own reason to buy it (even without a 'need'):

why buy it if you have it allready
For instance (and for me): I'll buy it to provide some actual and additional support to the developers, as a way of thanking them for so much improvement at no charge in something that I enjoy very much. The 'thank you Oleg' posts after free patches are very nice, and I've posted them too, but this is even better, IMO. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

P.S.: A quick note on designations: in the official announcement, Ubi is calling the collection to be released at the end of this month 'IL €" 2 Sturmovik Series: Complete Edition'. From what I've gathered, 'Platinum' edition or DVD would be the name of the release scheduled a bit later, around next summer, and this would include everything plus the so-called 'russian add-on' plus some other new things, maps and planes. So that would be indeed good reason to buy the 'Platinum' thing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I am all about supporting 1C/Maddox and will more than like be buying the DVD, but I wasn't sure if there was any other reason like new content...I wouldn't want to be in the unmerged portion of the community (which was a hideous idea in the first place) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Fact is I haven't reinstalled the sim in several years, I have a couple of backup copies that I patch when necessary, but having a mondo sized DVD might come in handy if I ever need to.

You've had the game running for 5 years without a reinstall? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

hi all,

Buy the darn thing and keep this genre alive. I don't need to buy it as I have all patches and discs but lets do it.

Also, a reinstall is easy with one DVD !!

Best Regards,

At 14.99p from www.play.com (http://www.play.com) I'll be buying one for backup purposes and to show the flag for IL2.

03-16-2006, 05:06 PM
i'm not gonna buy it. I just got done buying FB Gold Pack and Pacific Fighters a couple of weeks ago. I'm not going to use more money to buy the exact same thing I have right now.

I do not have a whole lot of money to toss around.

03-16-2006, 05:48 PM
I'm going to get it mostly to line 1Cs pockets a little to help them with BoB. Plus, it will be convenient way to reinstall in the future, rather than all those CDs and patches you have to go through. I will not be in a big hurry to buy it but I will have a copy, not a matter of if, just when....

03-16-2006, 05:56 PM
I still have Aces and Pacific Fighters. I gave away my original IL2 and the guy I gave it to LOVES IT! Hopefully another fan of this great sim. I plan to buy the new one just to support Maddox games.

03-16-2006, 06:01 PM
All the reasons cited for getting it are good. I also intend to get copies of the DVD. One for my backup, one for the 10 year old kid next door who is obsessed with anything to do with aircraft, and one for my son who is too damn lazy to "fiddle" with all the discs and patches http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

03-16-2006, 06:15 PM
Even with BoB coming up in several months or maybe longer, it'll be 2 to 3 years before we see the variety of ac we have in this collection. It'll be on my hardrive for a long time to come.

I have only one question. Will the DVD be patched up to 4.04m or Pacific Fighter out of the box?

03-16-2006, 06:17 PM
If my hard drive ever has to be replaced or when I upgrade to a new machine I definitly don't want to reinstall all of the CD's updates and patches one at a time. I'll be getting the DVD.

03-16-2006, 07:07 PM
Me too, backup , because my Cd is gettting worn out and support for the guys who are doing all of this.

Agreed http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif it's great to have the mortgage paid off ... so many toys to buy ... so little time.

03-17-2006, 01:39 AM
I'll buy it just to pad Oleg's stats.....

03-17-2006, 03:15 AM
Because if you don't buy it we'll come over there and rip your bloody arms off.
Beware of aunty jack.
