I was thinking of buying one of these games to add to my collection and was wondering which one you guys think is better, and why? By "better" I mean:
Realistic FM's
Decent DM's
Online play capability

I never got a chance to play EAW, as I could never find it for sale, but I spent over two years playing Jane's WWII Fighters online. To this day, it still has good graphics, the museum and pilot movies are a hoot, but after playing this series, Jane's will seem quite "arcade-like" to you, I fear.

Not that it should stop you from adding it to your collection, but the gunnery and flight models are rather simplistic compared to this series and in it's base form it is limited in plane selection.

I truly loved the game from 2000-2002, but when IL2 came out, it died for online play at HyperLobby. When I first got into flight sims, I had CFS 1 and Jane's. I tried them both and CFS 1 is still collecting dust, lol.

WW2 Fighters was a great game for its time, but for me, it's no IL2/FB/AEP/PF. I tried it again back in 2003 for a couple of days, but it just wasn't the same after playing this series for a year.

Boy, that's a tough call. I have both and like them equally. Fighters has better graphics cause it's a little newer, but there is more to EAW. And a free d/l called DAW which puts you in the Med. Theater. I'm not an on-line flyer, yet, so I don't know about that part. And you probably find both of them for less then $15.00 together. I know EAW can be had for $5.99. WW2 Fighters for $9.99 or less.

With how cheap they are, do yourself a favor and buy both. Both are excellent sims and IMO are classics in the simulation genre.

Buy both and love it.

Like others have already said, if you can find them you might as well buy both. Jane's is definitely more of an arcadish feeling game than Il2 but its does have a great immersion quality to it with the little Hisotry Channel like videos on each aircraft and the period music.

I'm a die hard AEW fan. The graphics are horrible by todays standards but the game is still solid, a true classic. The cockpits are still nice and the flight models still seem fairly realistic.

Get both...if you can find it, try SDOE as well...has it good points...including over 100 ac, drivable ground vehicles, and a WWI set in mods

You may find that Janes has a LOT of features that FB simply cannot compare to

EAW can put so many ac in the air at once with no lag it will blow u away

As good as FB is, it still falls FAR short of many things these older games got right the first time

EAW provides a far better offline experience than IL2... in term of campaign, AI, a game engine that support 100+ bombers formation, and immerson http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

WWII fighter is not bad for offline play too, although its campaign mode is just canned missions, some of them are ready well-done.

I started with Janes WWII Fighters and loved it. But then I tried EAW, mostly for the Battle of Britian Campaign which was excellent IMO. After getting EAW I didn't return to Janes. One reason was a more convincing flight model. With it's version of "Full Real" turned on you had to fight engine torque constantly. I would get quite tired holding the stick against the torque during a P-51 escort of B-17's over Berlin. (although you could 'warp' to target I seldom took advangate of it.) And landing could be tricky at times. Navigation was fairly easy if you toggled the map but more fun not to. You could always radio the tower for directions.
Both games have lots of addons which improve the game quite a bit. When I had EAW I d/l'ed the Desert Air War total conversion and loved it. You can also d/l mods that give europe hills, (which the original game didn't model) and improved land textures including all 4 seasons.
Personally I liked EAW better than Janes even though, as stated earlier, Janes has better graphics.

I suppose it would be a nice diversion but I think you'll see why the IL-2 series is by far the best flight sim out there.

I would recommend EAW which I still play from time to time off line. The graphics are dated but not too bad. Decent though not great FM. Advantages which I enjoy are squadron management,(better than IL2 series and good for immersion) numerous mission and campaign options and the experrience of a really large number of planes in the air with no hit on fps. Woth picking up, as I have at times seen it for about $10 at best buy.

Too bad that Il2 doesnt have the kind of interface Jane's WWII Fighters has, and the music also. Jane's also has a nice museum section with cool 3D models of the planes, cockpits and weaponssytems. It also has some nice videos; guncam footage and interviews with pilot Aces. Il2 is definately lacking in that regard. Definately get Jane's, even if its just to watch the videos, hehe.

THne again EAW does have some nice combat against hoards fo bombers etc.............. Get em both or see if you can download bits for them, I seem to remember downloading a EAW update that improved the graphics, but my memory ain't what it used to be............................. what were we talking about?

I liked them both. EAW probably was more complete and had an excellent campaign - more immersive and fun than IL2/FB/PF for that matter. WW2 Fighters was just plain fun to play - and for the period had excellent graphics. If space aliens invaded and took away my copies of IL2 and its sucessors I would probably play WW2 - as its graphics are still not bad.

After reading back through some of the responses, it reminded me of those other features that really did make WWII Fighters fun. I mostly talked of my online experience, but I have to agree with the above comments as well.

That Fly_Now mission was a blast with all of the waves of fighters coming at you. In the middle, four Focke Wulfs come at you and that's the turning point...If you can survive them, even smoking a little, you had a chance at a sweep. You could edit the mission to use any plane you wanted as well.

Also, the pilot's voices and expressions were awesome. That British pilot and his pranged crate with more holes than a bleediin' collander! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I also used to fly Allied Mission 7 as practice. That was a great Spit mission. Wow, I almost want to install it again now...

Both games are very dated, therefore very inexpensive at the moment. You should be able to get them both. EAW has the coolest campaigns, WWIIF has better graphics, and somewhat resembles the IL2 engine.

I still play with WWII Fighters, mostly to paint skins and switch around mods. It works fine in XP and SP1, but I've heard that SP2 causes some problems. I also had EAW for a while and it also rab on XP.

The biggest problem you may have is graphic drivers causing problems. With EAW there is a problem with GeForce cards (with XP?) where the text is garbled in the mission briefing slides -- I never could resolve that issue and that is a main reason why I never got into EAW seriously. More recently, I ran into a similar problem with WWII Fighters and my Ti4600 card where drivers above a certain version number caused all sorts of graphic glitches.

As for style and playability, I think both are good within their domain of strengths. Oleg Maddox used to list WWII Fighters as one of his favorite games, and you can see its influence on IL-2's visual style: 3D cockpits with mousepan; damage graphics; squadron markings on aircraft; head shake; lens flare; and pilot bail-out animations to name a few similarities. However, WWII Fighters has a comparitavely simple FM and the aircraft machineguns act somewhat laser-like. On the other hand, it has a thrilling feel of speed, and white-knuckled action permeates the game to give it a very special feel.

EAW had more realistic FMs and damage models, but much simpler graphics and 3D models than WWII Fighters. On the other hand, the theater of operations is all of Western Europe (vs. only the Ardennes region), there are more planes to choose from, and the sim can put more aircraft in the air at once.

BTW, EAW is still sold at EB Games and Game Stop for around $10 US, while WWII Fighters disappeared from store shelves around late 2001. They were released the same year, 1998.

As I recall, when Coolbits was enabled in older NVIDIA drivers, it created a slider for Texel Alignment. Left or right a click or two and it corrected the text in Jane's WWII.

I bought WWII Fighters in 1998 when it first came out, and never looked back.You see, I'm an airplane nut at heart and a history buff to boot. So, playing WWII Fighters sort of put me right in the middle of all those great stories I used to read.
It's still a very playable game, but like "Evil" has said, the FM's aren't what we're used to in IL-2, and the planes are very limited.It's a keeper for sure but, If you can't find a copy, I have two spares, PM me if you want one .

EAW all the way. The whole feel of the game is better. There are also enough website mods out there to choke a horse...I even found some decent Eastern Front maps and mods to play with before IL2 came out. And there are Pacific maps and mods, sounds, jeez, by the time I finished adding all the sound, flight, map, and plane mods it was a whole new game that was amazing.

There's a mod called Enemy Coast Ahead that allows you to fly any plane in the game. There's a mod called EAW Stab that has an automatic campaign mod system that allows you to select the Med, Pacific, Euro theatre and the planes for it, then it automatically switches skins and skins with the different seasons. Great game all around. Best until IL2, etc..

Nice little touches, too: if you buzz a farm or other building you'll see people run out an sometimes they'll be troops who'll shoot at you. Also troops bail out of their vehicles when you approach and will start shooting at you sometimes. And you can always relax in the barracks by listening to the radio in it.

Do a Google to see the huge fan base out there then decide.

Do you guys remember that cool feature of WWII Fighters the kills online being painted on your plane as soon the other guy respawn? or the UFO award lol? and I still think the mission builder was better than what we have now on PF with all the programable trigers and stuff

I forgot that I had both titles...I think I'll blow the dust off of them and relive my glory days as a mustang pilot...I wonder, do they still work on XP or will I have to go download something?

I did like the vast numbers of craft in the air in EAW...but rudders that didnt move just dont cut it, lol

Yea, Skyghost, of course I remeember the victory crosses/ribbons on planes that increased or decreased as you killed or got killed....one of those little things that made Janes a ton O fun...in FB we get rolling pencils PFFT! lol

Janes features superior to or missing from FB/PF;

1 sounds-awesome sounds in Janes...the engine fly-by sound as HL opens is the 109 from janes...airframe creaking under high G...pilot voices (scalable to foul, hehe), no silly IL2 gunner "OHHH NIIIIYYYAAAHH", but "my kite's been pranged"(british) or "i'll see you in HELL!" (german) or "son of a b i t c h !" (american, what else?)...in ext tgt views, sounds of bullets on armor when hitting such vehicles...pilot huffing and puffing under high G's...excellent vintage music, too

2 graphics-no, not as good as FB, naturally, but d a m n fine for 1998, and not TOO far behind FB...excellent cockpits, some of which are STILL better than FB, and those hi-res skins are sweet!...also, when you consider system requirements to run either game, Janes has WAY more bang for the buck

3 pilot aids-on no cockpit views in janes, you could choose up to 3 instument pop ups, two sizes, and place them in any corner of screen...real instruments, not the 2+2 cluster in FB....tgt arrow, like FB, but only ONE, and available with or without cockpit, and on toggle...tgt "window" PIP, a realy handy aid, which, IMHO, compensated for limitations of virtual vision, and made "dots" less critical..also on toggle

4 mission builder-fast, easy, no fuss, no muss, with a decent selection of AI planes ground objects etc...single missions and campaign missions in janes MUCH more fun, too, and easily set for multiplay

5 interface-VERY user-friendly, easy to understand for the noobiest of noobs...chat interface for multiplay was quick simple and easy (in FB i STILL hit numbers first by accident and ruin my message...grrr!...and to this day, every now and then in FB when I type a message and hit "I" key, my engine quits, WTF?)

6 scoring-team/individual kills/losses counter...what more do you need? certainly not "points" that encourage kill stealing and prove nothing anyhow

ok, so it only had 5 planes...and simple FMs...but you couldnt beat it for strapit on and go! kinda fun...the museum, as has been mentioned earlier in this thread, was a great teat, too, with pics, videos, text and really nice CG walkaround of the planes

At Janes you would have to put up with occasional cheaters, and scumbag "revive killers", but that wasnt too often, and for the most part, pilots were classy and honorable...wow, what a difference at FB....its liek a zoo, sometimes, these scumbags with the kill stealing, and team killing, hitting prnt scrren, using wingsmoke and lights throuhtout an engagement, and general all-round boorishness....as for cheating, isnt there a "speed hack" in FB?

Im NOT saying FB is inferior...not overall, anyhow...but it does mystifies me that for Oleg, who Ive heard played Janes, could possibly not iclude some of these features for IL2....particularly sounds, chat and scoring sytem, which, IMHO are flops in FB

Speed hack was used in Jane's, too. Be sure.

As for online comparison, there is none. Jane's is an Atari game compared to this series for online play. Yes, it has some nifty features and cool immersive qualities, while still being quite simplistic, but FM 5 is a joke and the gunnery is based on hit bubbles and firing a gazillion rounds a second.

- All bullets looked the same for all planes;

- Same damage model over and over and over;

- No way to regulate a pit-on game, as it was local to one's PC;

- No way to rejoin a server (people always got dropped from a game constantly);

- Having to launch over and over and over to get all players to finally make it there (mostly due to people launching first to acquire Host's IP so they could backdoor connect directly on the next launch and avoid HyperLobby cheat protection);

- People using V1.05 patch to revive on sixes (fixed in V1.08, but HyperLobby did not check which version a player was running);

- Read-only quick missions and competition missions that were modded to make one team start faster and higher than the other side;

- Program exists to have two ww2.sqs files in the folder, allowing HyperLobby to pass the good one and being able to launch with modified flight models;

Shall I go on?

Jane's was a great game and still has a few qualities that are appealing today, but online play is not one of them for me. From a nostalgic point of view, grab it, install it, enjoy it. However, online it doesn't hold a candle to this series. IMO, of course.
