View Full Version : Good Heavens!! Where Do I start!!

10-17-2004, 06:11 PM
Hi guys,

Believe it or not, I have never played any of Oleg's games. I know, I've been living under a rock http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But I just discovered Pacific Fighters and am looking forward to playing this sim. But where do I begin?

Do I have to purchase all of the other IL2 games to get the full effect for Pacific Fighters? If so, that's no problem, I think it would be worth it. What is the install process with all the sims to get to a fully working PF?

What patches would I need? Do I have to patch all the other sims before installing Pacific Fighters?

Will PF have a dynamic campaign?

I'm really confused about all of this, and it seems a bit overwhelming since I have been really out of touch with the WWII flight sim genre. (My last WWII sims were Aces of the Pacific, and 1942 Pacific Air War)

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've tried reading the other posts here but I'm only getting more confused. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Hope you guys can help me.

PF will run stand alone once you get it.

Or you can buy Il2 forgotten battles and AEP first them patch them up to vers 2.04 to play online with us. Or leave them as is, then wait for PF and load it on top of those.

I would imaging PF will install over any version of FB,AEP just fine.

Only time will tell.

10-17-2004, 06:25 PM
you can buy a Gold copy of AEP i think that has F.B and AEP togather then patch it up to 2.04 and then get P.F and youll have everything.or just get P.F but you wont have access to all the russian & german fighters.or from what i hear the p38.

10-17-2004, 06:54 PM
you should definately consider getting the ace expansion gold pack which should be forgotten battles and aep together with pacific fighters.
if you are interested in playing online and install pacific fighters standalone you will be missing out on probably about 80% of the servers.
i assume that many people will already own fb/aep and do a combined install of pacific fighters.

10-17-2004, 06:56 PM
ive heard on good authority that the Full install over AEP and the original IL2 fixes the oversized Muzzle flashes, this can only be achieved by a Full install over FB though (this is regarding the BETA version anyway)

Im hoping this is the same for the retail version, Getting very inpatient..

Thanks for the quick and helpful responses guys. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This won't be as hard to get into as I thought. I'll go for the Gold version of AEP and just patch it to 2.04 then I'm set for PF, and I still get to be overloaded with the complete air war in WW2 in all theateres http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks guys, and thanks to Mr. Maddox for making a sim like this, I have literally waited years for a simulation like this to come along.

10-17-2004, 07:50 PM
You need patch 2.01 first , then patch to 2.04. There are no 2.02 or 2.03 so don't worry about them... just 2.01 and 2.04 are the ones you need.

10-17-2004, 07:51 PM
I would buy the previous two too. I'm not exactly a flight simmer, but this game is awesome!

10-17-2004, 07:56 PM
Be prepared for a new addiction. These games are very indepth, very immersive...be prepared to learn your landings, takeoffs, gunnery, and all those good things. But its so worth it.

10-17-2004, 08:27 PM
Ther good thing about getting the AEP GOLD is that once you get PF on there you will have an awesome planeset with an awful lot of good maps and the whole package together just makes more sense. I dont think anyone who gets PF is going to go the solitary route for long. I bet that within 6 months at the most they will be going for the GOLD. The differing FMs of each plane in this series is just mind boggling. Couple that with the graphics whhhooooo baby. Flight sim heaven for sure.

10-18-2004, 03:00 PM
Thanks for the clarification GT182, 2.01 patch first, then 2.04 then install PF http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks everyone for the help and the encouragement, I'm literally the poster boy for culture shock, or should I say graphics shock? I have played Aces of the Pacific for years, and then thought that 1942 PAW was great with it's graphics, for years lol. Now that I see some of the Pacific fighters screenshots and some of the videos from IL2 I'm really floored by what I'm seeing.

I also noticed I'm going to be able to fly my most favorite aircraft, the F4U-1C http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif in all of it's 4 20mm cannon glory http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I hope this series gets more popular, I would really like to see a B-25H with a 75mm cannon. Would be really cool to make island or anti-ship raids with a low altitude strafer like that, but I can see I'm going to be busy for a long time with the other aircraft to try out first.

Hehe, I'm getting addicted and I don't even own any of the games yet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Full force flight modelling with proper ballistic and gravity modeling is really going to spoil me. Thanks again guys for the assistance and thanks to Oleg and others for taking the time to work on a project this large and diverse.

I heard that it only fixes the muzzle flashes on the new planes in PF, not the ones in FP/AEP.

I know how he feels! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I've been playing IL-2 and AEP since they were released, mostly single player and small groups of friends that set up a server on their own PCs.
I've tried flying online through hyberlobby and other public servers a few times but my skills just didn't seem to measure up, I usually don't last very long before I end up a flaming yawn dart.

This game is abit overwhelming at first and since I don't play on a regular basis, I've never really sat down and tried to master it.

But, I've always loved these types of aircraft since I was a kid and will try harder in the future not to embarrass myself and show what a true noob I really am!

Yes. You'll get the planes, maps and objects from both games.

quote:
I think it would be worth it.

You're right. It is.

quote:

Most likely this:
FB -> AEP -> 2.04 patch -> PF

quote:
Will PF have a dynamic campaign?

Yep. Like FB, just better.

quote:
I'm really confused about all of this, and it seems a bit overwhelming since I have been really out of touch with the WWII flight sim genre. (My last WWII sims were Aces of the Pacific, and 1942 Pacific Air War)

My hope is that PF will recreate the amazingly immersive feeling that I got playing AotP, and I think it will http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

10-18-2004, 04:58 PM
You would be best served to buy all of them.

IL-2 FB and AEP are pretty cheap right now. PF is going to rock and if you buy all of them you get Europe and the Pacific. El mucho aircraft. Not to mention your online possibilities will double.

10-18-2004, 08:15 PM
Ok. I'm sold. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

How do I purchase IL2 Gold and Pacific Fighters from Ubisoft? I tried, but it didn't give me the $10 discount on the price of Pacific Fighters that they promised.

10-19-2004, 12:47 AM
OK, I have IL2, IL2-FB and I'm getting Pacific Fighters. I don't have AEP and probably won't be getting it. What will be the best way for me to install Pacific Fighters to use the planes from IL2-FB?

Note: I tried downloading and installing the AEP 2.01 patch, because I read a thread at another site that said it would work and I would get a couple extra planes, but IL-2 FB wouldn't run with any of the AEP files installed.

10-19-2004, 02:59 AM
WilliamDu, you need AEP too, to make FB and PF work together, no way around it.

Almighty, welcome to the forum and to this game!

I recognise myself in your words: I spent all my childhood (and since!) reading about the WWII air war, dreamt of flying Spitfires in the Battle of Britain, etc, etc, etc... - And then suddenly one day, this amazing game called Il-2 came out and I got MUCH closer to my dream.

Remember that some frustrations will crop up in the beginning, when both AI and other on-line players beat you up completely. However, applying the principles of energy fighting (see the Robert Shaw book), knowing the weakneses of your opponents plane, and so on, will help remedy this.

For fantastic immersion, investigate a thingie called TrackIR as well.

Hey, hi Freycinet! Glad to see some familiar names on this board. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It's certainly been awile since I've played a WW2 flight sim, I usually play more modern jet aircraft or helo sims. I always hoped that they would just improve on games like Aces of the Pacific and such. Looks like my dream is finally comming true in a big way http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'll enjoy playing in the European theater as well, but the Pacific theatre holds a special interest to me.

Thanks again guys for the help and encouragement.

10-19-2004, 03:35 PM
Thanks Freycinet. I'll just play them as two separate games.

10-20-2004, 03:54 AM
Ok WilliamDu.... - I guess the AEP will be in the bargain bin soon, though, so if you find it cheap get it, there are some nice planes in there...

Du yourself a favor (Pun intended http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif) and get the AEP. It can be had for $19 in the US at just about any retail store. The additional planes in the AEP like the Spitfires round out thew sim. To get the full effect you need the whole package. Would you settle for a partial orgasm? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

That's an - um - interesting analogy, Bearcat; I'm now worried that you're playing it too much. You should cut back a bit, doing it too much is bad for your health.

10-20-2004, 07:10 AM
I'm basically in the same situation. I'm after AEP Gold, but cannot find it anywhere, except US sites. Is it a US bundle only ??

10-20-2004, 07:15 AM
AlmightyTallest. I really think you should read over Luckyboy's Guide For Complete Users. The guide simply compliles together Other people's ideas what works and answers many of the general questions I'm sure you'll have about the game and how to get the most out of it. With the exception of my psychotic diatribe on heating and power issues, most of the other ideas are those of smart people (surely not me!) and proven to work. The Guide is not intended to answer every question, but by the time you are done reading it, you will at least know what the real questions are as it relates specifically to your PC and needs. The link to the Guide is in my signature.

I warn you though, this game is addictive. Even with buying both Gold pack and Pacific Fighters, you'll find that for hours actually played and enjoyed, this game is priced on the cheap! I also think that yes, at first you'll want your areas of interest like the Pacific planes and fair enough; nobody says that's a bad thing or that you'll even get tired of that. However, hopefully, sooner or later you are going to stumble across things like the TB-3 and the IL-2 and the list goes on and on of planes that just don't look different, they behave as their own beast in the sky. With Pacific fighters, this game has yes, more planes than any other WWII flight sim. The bonus is that they actually come closer to actually behaving like real planes than any other flight sim game out there. Is this game perfect? Well, for perfect, you'd need $15,000,000.00 U.S. and the warehouse space to hold it! This game is as good as it gets for PC's and the developer has shown over and over and over again that they care about not just getting it right, but making it playable on as many PC's out there as possible. As a result, you can select many different levels of eye candy in order to get the frame rate you need.

Speaking of PC's... what PC do you plan on using to play this game on?

After reading the Guide and getting used to the game some, seek out a online squad. Be aware that many of them want you to feel that they are granting you some great favor by joining theor squad and nothing could be farther from the truth. There is a whole lot more demand for Indians out there that there is Chiefs! If you run into a squad that treats you like you are supposed to be some obedient AI plane, drop them like so much rubbish and find another one!. Don't get discouraged; you may have to go through a few squads that way.

10-20-2004, 01:38 PM
LuckyBoy, thanks a heap for the guide http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I've got some reading to do!

To answer your question, I'm sure I'm going to try the IL2, the Me-109, P-38, heck I know I'm going to at least experiment with every aircraft that is available to fly http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I don't know why my facination tends to stay in the Pacific though, my grandfather was there and has many stories about it. His ship was struck by 2 Japanese Kamikazi in 1945 off Okinawa, so it holds an interest for me.

But I know I'm going to enjoy every aspect of this sim, in all the theatres and aircraft presented. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Also, I'll be running the sim on the following:

P4 3.4 GHz
1 GB Kingston PC3200 RAM
Audigy 2 Gamer
GeForce FX 5900 128MB

Hope that will allow me to enjoy the eyecandy, I'm going to look into a Trak IR or perhaps even some stereo 3D gaming glasses if I can find a report that 3D stereo effects work good with this sim http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks again for the assist guys, I appreciate it.

10-20-2004, 02:33 PM
wow..i wish you luck on flying every plane in this sim. I've been flying at least 10+ hours a week(even sometimes 10 hours a day!) since IL2 first came out a few years ago and still don't think i've flown ever plane.(i havent really been keep track) also when you factor in weapon load-outs there must be over a million combos(just this weekend i found the wickedly cool weapon on a IL called VAP 250..its literally rains fire down on your enemy..was the COOLEST weapon i've ever seen http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif )

in fact just yesterday i flown a fiat for the first time(on-line server) after about 10 mins i realized it was one of the worst plane ever made..so i flew back to base landed it and look at the outside view before i hit refly...on take-off a enemy had made a pass on me. I thought he had missed but in fact he blew one of my elavtors totally off and put some nice holes in the rudder!!!!!

i about died laughing because i was amazed that the plane flew as well as it!!(i scored hits on two enemy planes) so after that my repect for that little plane when up a ton :-)

so welcome to IL2...the best flight sim ever http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

All this goodness and we haven't even gotten to 128 plane MP dogfighhts and MP dynamic campaigns and sqauds.
