I saw two guys in Pe-2 strafing their ground targets and when outta ammo, they landed on road, parked in front of German bikes and then gunner finished off few of them. Then they take off and RTB.
Just like your experience this one is also very unconventional.

Several years down the line and still the odd surprise or two - that's a sign of a beautiful relationship, that is http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I used this metod a lot on UKD servers with my He111. No prob at all getting it off the ground afterwards.

Hell, once I parked behind tanks in order to strafe them with my nose 20mm cannon, but forgot that tanks shoot back! LOL, I never took off that fast.

You can also land on any road...even a dirt track, and it behaves like a runway (very little bounce). You have to keep to the road though, if you stray into 'the rough' you tip over. I land on roads all the time if I'm damaged. you just need really low speed and to put the plane down as near to a stall as possible.

Yeahj I knew about the roads.... I expected that... but I never considered the frozen rivers... now random points in the river where you break through the ice.. that would be a hoot.

I recall running out of fuel in a Corsair and was a few feet shy of dry land when I had to set it down. My gear skimmed the top of the water just enough to make it up on the beach.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gifWhen learning to fly they teach you to land between two trees at proper angle. The idea being that the wings will sheer off, and you will have a chance at survival. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif They recomend this in the absence of clear roads, or smooth fields (identified by color from the air). I do this alot when needed in game. It's just fun http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif too bad not real effect

more interesting is the AI trains and convoys that happily chug across the non-frozen summer lakes and rivers in the offline dynamic missions http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh yeah, the over modelled rolling pencil, it's great isn't it?

I had to set my badly shot up IL2 down on a frozen river when playing a campaign a few years back. Coming from Norway, it never crossed my mind I couldn't.

A few points of rotten ice, especially at tight curves and river outlets would have been really cool, but in -30 centigrade Russian winters, I don't think it would be too realistic. Ice can usually hold even tanks in mid winter.

my old CFI was an ex bush pilot and had to do that more than once .. he said the scary thing was if you looked like just clipping one tree rather than one with each wing ...

Trying out the Pe-2 stuff I had my first mid-air that resulted in neither plane going down a couple of days ago; I kissed a Pe-3 in the tail with my right hand Merlin, removed that and one of the Pe's Horiz Stabs, we both stayed airborne...well at least until I filled it full of hispano shells for getting in the way.

When i tried out my new Pe-3bis against a Me110 in my very first QMB dogfight, i heard for the first time ever, since i am playing this game, that my reagrunner alerted me of beeing under attack and told me to break left. I knew that this has been implemented in the game for quiet some time, but it never appeared before. I first thought, that the appearance might be a feature of the new Patch, and repeated the dogfight, but it never happenend again yet. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

Too bad! If it would happen reguarly, the Beaufighter's observer would be at least somewhat useful.
