With all this birds on the deck, I begin to wonder how many of these birds can be carried by one single carrier. It is a general question, of course that vary from CV to CV, but if someone have some approx. numbers for specific CV it would be nice to see them..

Not referencing any historical documents, I think the general ballpark for the heavier US carriers carrying WW2 types were as follows:

Lexington Class 75-80
Ranger Class 60 or so
Yorktown Class 70-75
Wasp Class 65-70
Essex Class 80-90 (capable of 100+)

Again, don't quote me. If no one provides more accurate figures by the next time I log in, I'll look these up for you.

Those are total aircraft, including those below deck. Also realize planes were packed much tighter in real life that in the sim.

Remember that there were also smaller Escort, or "Jeep" Carriers.

In WWII USS Enterprise had four Squadrons of
combat aircraft on board 1 fighter squadron[F4F],1 scout squadron[SBD dauntles], 1 bomber squadron[SBD], 1 torpedo squadron[TBF}.Each
Squadron had roughly 15 aircraft. So this type
of carrier could carry 60 to 70 aircraft later
Cv's Carried more aircraft and at the end of
the war Enterprise had been equiped with F4U
Night Fighters.

Don't forget the hangar deck, which is directly below the flight deck. The hangar deck can hold a lot of planes, since no take-off area is required.

So...the number of planes on the flight deck at any one time doesn't indicate the number of total aircraft on a carrier http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Also, remember the number of aircraft on carrier decks could be misleading because carriers could ferry planes which would be land based. It was faster to deliver completely assembled aircraft to the various island bases.

The total actual number of aircraft could vary, but there was usually a basic number defined for operational efficiency. This number could vary dependent up the carrier's orders and type of aircraft in the respective squadrons assigned to the ship.

USN CVs embarked planes on deck, which is why we carried more planes than the RN or IJN. IJN practice was to keep all planes in hanger spaces, where the USN only took them below as needed for mainenance, and sometimes for spotting.
