I'm thinking about building a new system and right now I'm running:
Dell Demension 4600, Pentium 4 2.66ghz, 2.5gig RAM, ATI Radeon 9000 Pro(AGP), 60Gig hard drive, WindowsXP Home (sp3). I have DSL for internet and online gaming.

I'd like to build something that would at least double my performance/speed. Is it possible to do a build for for around $500.00(US)?

Please give me all the suggestions and advice you guys can!

If you go with AMD CPU, AMD Based Mobo and a ATI Graphics card you can build a nice rig for about $500, if you stick to Intel you end up paying about 100 more for the same performance.

I just finished a build not long ago. Here's what I got and what it costs:

> Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D-LE, LGA-1156 ($180)
> Processor: Intel Core 2 i5 750 ($190)
> RAM: Corsair 4 x 2GB DDR-3 1333MHz ($260)
> Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4770 ($110)

All from Tiger Direct.

I ripped out the guts of the old PC and installed all the new gear in the same chassis. I'm thankful I initially invested in a good quality, sturdy power supply, chassis, and drives. Paid dividends on the new build.

Oh, and this is now a wonderfully powerful system, and it consumes less juice than the hardware it replaced. I can't say enough about the i5 and the 4770!

I just bought and built my fifth AMD system, parts all coming from Newegg.

Mobo: MSI NF980-G65 $159
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 $156
RAM: Corsair 2x 2GB DDR3 1600 $180
Graphics: XFX GTS 250 1GB $155
3x 320GB SATA drives (2x in RAID0 for the OS) $150
Antec case (has 3 120mm fans with pretty blue LEDs) and 750W PSU $170

All in all, a pretty nice system for not a whole lot of money. It's also much quieter than my last Athlon 3500+ system, mainly due to the fans and better case design.

And don't forget the second hand market!Lots of people moving from skt 775 to i5/i7/AM3 means quite a few bargains about.
I just upgraded from a single core amd 4000+ skt 939 system to a Q6600 overclocked to 3.2,a skt 775 motherboard,and 4 GB of ran for 150.
