Obiously some of you have, theres a whole forum dedicated to this subject. I was just wondering how many of you fly under your own name, Or a squadrons?

Wasn't sure where to post this, feel free to move it :s

That looks nice, ill have a go at making my own now

08-08-2009, 01:33 PM
Looks nice, i'm not that great at making good skins, but i have mad a Template and final for our squads plane, the F4U-1D Corsair. its basically what i think a Army brown ground based corsair would look like with our squad emblem, and an eagle on the nose instead of a sharkmouth. I'll see if i can get it to work on a photo hosting web site.

I have a few made for me by Kristorf and JestersInk.
They taught me how to skin when we flew together. I have been making my own and those for others from the experience I gained from their tutoring.
If you two are reading this, thank you again for all the help.

Some of mine, I've used HunHunter when gaming in NZ since 2001, but there was already one here when I turned up http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I started a few of these a while ago, as you can see i'm still not done.

Being a skinner, I have my HD full of the stuff. Here's a few examples:

Spitfire Mk.VIII, ETO and SEAC version. The "NV" is the code for no 79 Squ, my online squadron (Jesters template):

When I joined, I had to go through OTU. Being a bit vain, I wanted to graduate in style and made this school Seafire for myself (notice the big, red "L", again Jesters basic template):

In my opinion absolutely best skinner when it comes to single engine American stiff is R-Target (he posted one of his own skins further up). I skin mostly British planes, so I asked him to make a Mustang for me. It's absolutely smashing:

Here's one of my American models, ready for adventure on the high sea (again thanks to Jester):

08-09-2009, 06:48 AM
Wow you guys, your skins are slick! Nice, and don't complement me on mine, I only added the kills, Haely, "All or Nothing" and the shark mouth on the nose. hehe, I'd like to thank whoever made the original but I dunno who did :S

08-09-2009, 08:29 AM
What program did you use AllorNothing? It looks quite good, so I suppose Photoshop? My "slick" skins are all courtesy of Jesters ready made Photoshop templates (well, not all, the P-47 below is my own template), ready made templates will give you a super slick skins with very little effort. Your Lightning is very nice, considering the Lightning is among the hardest planes to skin decently.

08-09-2009, 08:38 AM
hehe, thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Yep I used photoshop along with a few gogle images http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Haely williams, japanees flag etc. What is a template, and where can I get them? They sound fun! ^_^ thanks

08-09-2009, 09:26 AM
Here's my personal ride, fit for almost every occasion, used with II./JG53:

I personally love them, skinned by me using Jester's Ink template with a few tweaks and weathering etc.
Although I do have a lot more skins on my HDD from various skinnings from the greats such as Kristoff, Jester, Canon etc. all the way to new skinners and amateurs such as myself.

08-09-2009, 10:55 AM
Just to answer the basics:

A template (when it comes to skinning) is a Photoshop (or similar) file in many layers. The painscheme and markings are the lower layers, the layers above has things like the panel-lines, rivets, dirt etc.

Here's an illustration of the basic idea:

To make the file into a skin, the whole stack of layers are saved as an 8-bit index colour TGA-file, and the resulting file is put in the appropriate skin-folder.

Here's a shot of a Mig-3 template showing various paint-scheme layers:

There are a lot of very nice templates over at http://www.simmerspaintshop.co...lates-il-2-series-5/ (http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/forums/dlcat-templates-il-2-series-5/)

As a non-member you can download three files a day. If I may be so bold, I will recommend my own Hurricane template- It is made to be easy to use for the novice skinner and give you the basics before you start on the more difficult ones:

http://www.simmerspaintshop.co...e-mk-i-template-178/ (http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/forums/downloads/templates-il-2-series/5/hurricane-mk-i-template-178/)

08-09-2009, 11:30 AM
I made this skin with windows paint, beleive it or not:

08-09-2009, 11:56 AM
I can believe that, I made a few in paint myself befor moving on to photoshop http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I like the idea of adding dirt/weathering just not sure how without literaly drawing it on. I'm into this stuff from good old Airfix kits and the such. i've painted loads of real models but not realy any P.C. ones, should be fun! ^_^

08-09-2009, 02:37 PM
You're not the only one staring with Airfix, mate.

The idea with the templates is that all such things as wear and dirt is there to start with. All you need to do is adding the markings (or paintscheme if you want your own colours like Silverfish).

08-09-2009, 02:59 PM
I did that one from the void...

08-10-2009, 02:13 PM
For Paint that's not a bad result, Silverfish. If you enjoy skinning, there's a free program called GIMP that will do most of what Photoshop does. It will allow you to work with layers, and it can even open Photoshop templates, though you'll need to adjust the layers a bit.

Templates for the Goha:

08-10-2009, 03:05 PM
I like GIMP, it works well...

I havent quit figured out the layers yet...

08-10-2009, 03:46 PM
I've not used GIMP, what a name. But I would recomend photoshop. Just a pitty everything has to be BMP files, sucks all the quality out of any photo's of stuff u wanna stick on the side, Haely williams, Swastikas etc. How does a template differ from a Blank skin. i.e. when u download a skin you get marked and unmarked. How is the unmarked version different to a template?

That just lets everone know I'm a 13year old...

08-10-2009, 05:21 PM
I've tried GIMP, but I just cant figure it out. I can't view the video so I dont know how. And I'm 16 in two months, I think its good of him to be honest and not exagerate. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

A template is a skin-file in may layers. You can add your own markings on it (name, killmarks, fancy paintjobs like Silverfish made), without painting out the panel lines. An example:

Here i have taken a Hurricane skin and painted some personal markings on top of the existing skin. As you can see, I have painted out the ribbing and exhaust stains where the markings are. Actually, I used a template an put the markings layer on top, but the effect is the same.

Here I have put the same markings in the marking layer. They are below the ribbing, panel lines, rivets and dirt layers. As you can see, the text now appears to be a part of the plane, contrary to the above example.

Just download a template and open it in Photoshop, and you'll get the idea rather fast.

If you are concerned about quality, there's a small utility called Bright that will convert Photoshop templates to conserve as much quality as possible.

08-11-2009, 10:47 AM
Does gimp work with layers?

08-11-2009, 11:03 AM
why use GIMP if you have Photoshop?

08-11-2009, 11:24 AM
I only have Photoshop 6.1 or somthing... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

My other blue plane is also blue.

You make these flying barrels look so good, Target!

Silverfish: Bout Photoshop 6 and GIMP work with layers. Actually, you can open layered Photoshop files with GIMP, and GIMP can save in Photoshop format. The only limitation is that Photoshop can't open files saved in native GIMP format.

As I said: Go to one of the links I posted and download a template for a plane you like. Open the file in Photoshop to get an idea of how things work. Soon, you'll be churning out high quality skins by the dozens!

08-12-2009, 02:24 AM
Thanks, I so will. Just as soon as I have a some spare time! Looking forward to using a template, thanks for those huricane pics I totaly get how a temoplate differers to an unmarked skin now! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Cheers, I'll have a go some time and post the results in the Paint Schemes forum ^_^ Thanks again.

I look forward to seeing your creations, Gents!

08-12-2009, 08:15 AM
I selected the last layer and brought it to the top and Painted it all red, then I moved it to the bottom and nothing changed?

How do I do it?

08-12-2009, 08:19 AM
How do I know witch one is the Marking layer?

08-12-2009, 08:54 AM
Alright I figured it out, but when I save it as a bmp once I'm done then It dosnt show up in the skins list in the game so I open it with paint and its saved as 24 bit so I save it to 256 color and then it loses some of its color!?

What do I do so it saves right without losing its color??

08-12-2009, 09:50 AM
Save the skin as a BM-file in full quality, then run it through this little baby:

http://www.simmerspaintshop.co...batchfile-bright-35/ (http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/forums/downloads/general/12/batchfile-bright-35/)

It will analyse your skin, and allocate as much shades as possible to the colours your are using most. It is a really neat utility.

Not all templates are equally easy to understand. I know this is shameless self promotion, but the Hurricane template (here: http://www.simmerspaintshop.co...e-mk-i-template-178/ (http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/forums/downloads/templates-il-2-series/5/hurricane-mk-i-template-178/) ) has all the layers named to make it easier to understand what is what, and an extra "where is what" layer to help you navigate the skin-file. I'm not suggesting sticking to Hurricanes, but it is a neat template to learn how templates work.

08-12-2009, 10:14 AM
A BM-file in GIMP?

08-12-2009, 10:28 AM
OK, I'm totalyy lost... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

08-12-2009, 11:10 AM
Check it out:

I saved it as a jpeg and then opened it with paint and then copyed it and then opened the void skin and then pasted and then saved...

Looks nice. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Thanks Friendly Flyer. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

08-12-2009, 11:39 AM
Hah, there you go, the beauty of templates!

What you do is possible, but you do loose quite a bit of quality on the way.

I have Photoshop 7, but I think you can go File -> Save As... (it will bring op a window) Format -> BMP in Photoshop 6 too.

If you PM me, I have a small file you put in \Plug-Ins\Import-Export folder, that allows you to export as a ready skin right away. It's very useful!

Great, I finaly habe some spare time and Photoshop dies on me, I'll try the good old on and off again in a minute. Also, how do I get tht 24 bit program thing to work?

08-14-2009, 01:54 PM
Is it a problem with Bright?

08-15-2009, 02:02 AM
Just finished this one for myself

08-15-2009, 12:28 PM
Yeah, got bright in win war but it won't run when I doiuble click on any of the icon, theres 3 :S Beasutifull p-40 skin! I am reminded of the fast show guy going "SNAKE!"

08-15-2009, 03:56 PM
AllorNothing, you are not supposed to click on any icons, you put the plugg-in the relevant folder and export through the Photoshop program.

Also done more MTO and SEAC stuff
