View Full Version : Time to update Russian planes

Just for fun and practise I made a qmb and tested the defensive gunners from a H111 and found out that the I-16 is immune to MG-fire.
I had set setting to arcade and the nose was totally covered by arrows more than 50 hits.
I tested to fly against Hurricanes and spits and succeded to defend the bomber.
I tested a DB against Zekes and shoot them down all three of them two times out of three.
Its time for Maddox to update the damage profiles for the "oldies and goddies" like I-16 and lagg-series.

If anyone says that it is how it was, I suggest that you take a rifle and shoot five shots at the engine of your car or motorcycle and see how far you get. And if you dont have a car or bike, take your neighbors and say " Russian aircraft took this damage without failure, so should your car/bike also do"

How do you get the arrows to appear?

You have to set the arcade-mode to 1 (in the config file that can be found in the FB/PF folder)

At what range?

I-16s have armor in front of the engine that makes it resistant to machine gun fire.

But I can assure you it's not invulnerable from behind...

For the arrows;
go you your UBISoft dictionary on your harddrive, look for the conf file, open it with notepad and look for
[game]
Arcade=0

change it to

[game]
Arcade=1

and the hits are visible as arrows.
Big arrows are big projectiles.
Fragments of projectiles are visible as arrow to.

For the matter of distance.

I started to shoot at 500 m and stopped when the prop of the I-16 chewed on the elevator.
I made a screendump to save this.

For your own tests.
Select an aluminium engine. Most motorcycles got one, many highperformance cars got one.
Dont choose castiron-ones.
The Porsches and VW-beetles engines are almost of the same construction as radial aircrafts engines.
If you dont have any of yourself choose one in your neighborhood.

Find a rifle with calibre of 7 to 8 mm. Use full metal jacket ammo. Ammo for hunting dont give the same effect on hard targets.

Start the engine and put the throttle to half max rpm, try to put some shots in selected engine from different ranges, start at 500 m and stop at 25 m and compare the damage.
You cant tell the difference, I assure you.
You will find it hard to find any hit that dont make any damage. If every hit dont crack the engineblock or the cylinderhead, it will damage something else vital for ignition or carburator.

Put some birch-wood layers to protect the engine and you see that it doesnt matter for the penetration.

If someone dont like your tests, put the blame on mee.

As for the armour in the front of the engine;
put the link to a blueprint or anything that confirm this. Dont choose another post that says the same, because I can post one too that says the oposite.

A good resource on the I-16 is a book called 'Swastica in the Gunsight' by Igor Kaberov.

In one case, I-16 engine was found to be stopped by single mauser round. In other cases, stopped by short bursts of MG15. These weak bomber guns thwarted many ramming attempts. It saved the authors life in one case (shot out his engine as he was trying to ram a Ju-88).

Armor on engine? It's a early war plane, and didn't even have frontal armor for the pilot, never mind the engine. Probably you read info that said 'engine is the pilot's armor'.

Sweet Lord!!!!What on earth is that Arcade thingy about and is it even mentioned in the game manual?!Like I know we arent ever gonna explore a fraction of all the missions /features in this wonderful sim but that is a hidden(?) feature if ever there was one.Is Jugent(respect!) the only person who knew about this one or am I the only who didnt?!

You expect them to update the DMs for VVS "Stoli trolleys" ?

Come on....you'll be expecting world poverty and famine to be cured overnight, too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Oleg makes his delta wood from that green pool of alien slime that lives on the bottom left of the desert map. You know..the one that looks like it's out of C&C:Tiberian Sun.

Cheers,
Norris

The I-16 has a metal cowling that protects the engine from frontal attacks instead of the traditional hole that other radial engines have.

Pic of the cowling here:

The I-16 damage model is fine since the engine will conk out by Ju-87 and Ju-88 tailgun fire ,which is the MG81 that replaced the MG 15, but the I-16 engine does not fail under MG 15 fire. The MG-15 is probably undermodelled in this aspect.

Interesting idea BBQ, and you indicate you may potentially have greater testing skills than anything else exhibited in this thread so far, or at least test reporting skills. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

jugent, your report makes no sense, limiting Arrows to I~16 only, and confining the other "tested" aircraft to nothing more than "shot down" or "defend bomber."

Thanks.

I'm afraid to say that I was wrong on the Mg 15 issue, the gun does kill I-16 engines. I tested this again but I didn't know how the I-16 radiator work but discovered that those port will move as you open the radiator . One Mg-15 bullet into that hole and you're RTB. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Nah, the DM is realistic. During the war the Germans set their fuel and ammo to unlimited. This along with the patiences of a turtle was the popular but very secret tactic. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Anyone seen my medication? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

I've seen the I-16 up close at the local museum. It's simply a slotted disk inside the cowling. The disk seemed pretty thin to me. It would have slowed a bullet but to be honest I don't know if it would have been enough to make a difference.

Can anyone x-ray that head? It might be like that Godzilla film where the Japanese scientists take an x-ray shot while he's smashing up some pylons or whatever and they proclaim, "But look - his brain is only the size of a pea!"
