View Full Version : Pe-2 & Boonty(?) box: anyone explain for me?

05-01-2006, 02:44 PM
Hi there

Apologies as i have been away from the forum for a while - however I was wondering about a couple of things that seem to be causing alot of discussion at the minute:
therefore i would be grateful if people could explain (admittedly I am too lazy to trawl a load of threads to work out exactly what these things are http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)
1) what is this bounty/boonty box thingy that people seem to be complaining about? - is it something to do with online clients or something?

what is the (paid?) pe-2 thingy - is this the addon that was intended for the russian market only (for which I remember many European/American complaints! €" and I must admit I agreed!) which i heard about a while ago?
Could anyone please expand on these things for me?

Thanks in advance!!

Have you seen the film Hellraiser??

The one where if you open the puzzle box it transports you to hell where flying hooks stick into you skin and cenobite creatures slowly torture you so you spend the rest of eternity in utter agony.

Well, Boonty Box is a million times worse.

At least

So there's 20000 threads per page nowadays?

Hi Fluke - good to see you posting again btw - BoontyBox is a game download manager somewhat akin to Windows media player, it is easily uninstallable and I haven't noticed any urges on my part to sacrifice babies or drink blood from the throats of nubile virgins since I downloaded the Pe2 add-on from Ubisoft's English on line shop. The add-on in question is, as you suspect, the first of three projected releases originally intended for the Russian market. New flyables Pe2/3 series, new campaigns, single missions and a few new ground objects.

I'm having lots of fun with it. So are others. Hope you do too.

There are a couple of mission files missing from the download - that's the sort of ****-up that can happen with any release, and is easily rectified by checking the Pe2 add-on thread at the top of this board.

I think that's covered it. Hope it helps.

Before i get anymore sarcastic responses i will say this:

the only reason i asked this was that unlike alot of kids who have the time to attend these forums frequently (read the initial respondent to my post) i have neither the time to read loads of past posts to work this topic out nor the luxury to read all the 40000 posts explaining what it is all about - I simply asked for a couple of kind souls to summarise it for me :|

Thanks to anyone with a more mature response

what we know:

1)when you purchase the Pe2 add-on you are forced to download it through a game/download manager called boontybox.

2)During the install, if you don't tell it not to, boonty box will check your HDD for other installed games.

3)BoontyBox will also set some cookies in IE.

4)BoontyBox is a game manager/ data miner/ and DRM program. It can be uninstalled at any time after the download completes, no information should be sent about your if you do this.

5)The BB install creates a service that runs with windows, and two processes that run whenever you play IL2. It is unclear if these leftovers are DRM or just inert remnants of the program, but none of them apparently 'phone home' anything. These two processes are launched through a modified .exe file and cannot be simply deleted. (game won't work)

6) members of the community have devised ways to completely remove these remnants.

7) If BB was left active on your computer it would gather data about what games (probably BB games only) that you play, how often and long you play them. It would report this back home for marketing purposes. There is nothing to suggest that any other type of information would be 'harvested' from your computer.

Thanks alot for your concise and informative summary georgeo - very much appreciated!

i must admit i am quite disappointed things have steered in this direction - seems this kind of stuff is probably going to get more and more frequent.....- at least its good to see somone in the community will be able to keep up with this kind of stuff and be able to share it with us http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Your welcome fluke

People have gotten their nerves frazzled over this mess the last few days. (including me) There are many threads on the subject, but you would have to read almost all of them to get the scoop.

And I'm responsible for the information I present. I didn't know that you could tell BB not to search your drive until I read it in the forums, but everything else I have experimented and confirmed myself. The conclusions that I draw about what BB dose and when it dose them are my own too. w/o a peak @ the source code, it goes w/o saying that I could be mistaken, but I've yet to see anything but speculation contradict what I've told you.

You just need to get a grip on Danjama's sense of humor; it's a bit rough at times.

Boonty Box is easily eliminated, I got rid of it simply using "Add/Remove Programs".

You will want to get rid of it once you have Pe-2 (Should you opt to actually buy it, I did) downloaded. Especially if - like me - you are using Zone Alarm. During on-line flying it kept popping-up (instantly minimizing the game and in one case saving a lucky blue pilot's heinie just as I was about to blast him into internet ether in my P-63) asking for permission for Boonty Box to access the internet. Telling ZA to block it in Program Control did no good, because the cunning little program kept fooling ZA into thinking it was a DIFFERENT Boonty Box, not that one Owner had said to block. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

All fixed now, though. The only problem is that many - if not most - servers won't be switching over unless enough members of the community buy it to make it worthwhile. Right now I have to switch versions when I go online.

I discussed this with Seahawk (CO of the 334th and the guy who makes the decisions regarding the server) and that was the decision made.
