Bob Hoover 7 a buddy would take turns re-filling their Cub or Taylor craft while in flight. much the same thing.
Atleast they were young & dumb...

The site never said, all it says is

Proof positive that it doesn't have to be new to be breathtaking, this is a photo of an in-flight restart on a Piper J-3 Cub. Since there was another plane taking the photo we might assume this was staged, but who knows? You can see the propeller is not turning and the man's hand is reaching to the prop blade. The early Cubs had no electric starter, so the only way to start the engine was to grab the prop blade and . . . PULL!
