View Full Version : Oleg...we want another radiator button that goes the other way

Oleg, with 7 posible cowl settings now in FB it's time to add another button that cycles the cowl the OTHER way.

To go from [cowl closed/auto to cowl open] should not take 6 button presses.
(when going from [cowl open to cowl closed/auto] only takes 1 button press)

I am the button man! Please make the game interface better and add this button that cycles the cowl the other way.

I mentioned this along time ago with the pilot head lean left and right but got no feedback except whiner and people saying the way the cockpits are made leans would cause glitchs in the model.

I think the radiator position - + are definatly needed and should be very easy to add but this will probally get overlooked like most things do on here.

Hey...this tread is very important....
every time we have to change cowl position we have to read in which position it is.
with 2 buttons is possible jus one way to full close or another way to full open...
Great post RBJ...

I like the idea. Similar to the way one can increase/decrease fuel mixture, prop pitch and supercharger.

Espically when you could damage the cowling at high speeds if you open them too far. I think it even says that on the P47 dash somewhere?

Maybe because it's true. How do you figure the simple facts to be whining? It's pretty well known that the plane cockpit modelling in this game as well as the cockpit textures aren't made to be seen from any other angle.

As much as I'd kill to have lean left/right it simply is out of the question until the next Oleg sim perhaps.

Hey. I have a free slider I can put that on. Hehehe.

Seriously, though.
That and map zoom.

Ray, I thought (and I am not trying to be facetious here!)
that you could put the radiator on a slider.

I just checked and nope. It's not there. Wouldn't want it on a slider anyway. I have 2 sliders, and they are for elevator trim and throttle.

I have cowl on 2 sides of a 4 way switch in the front of my CH Pro Throttle.

Sure would be nice if I could move it one way or the other to cycle through the cowl settings in one direction or the other.

Yes, put it on a slider! I want a USB box with 20 sliders I can label them all, just for FB and use them for a mixing board when I play disco and bounce up and down with my mouth wide open... and never look back!

Yes, that would be nice.

As for trim, I think that the host should have a way to force auto-trim to prevent the trim-cheating.

Trim speed should be setup with a stamina limit, the more it is used the longer it takes to move it.

I was waiting for a post like this. In this forum, one can post the most reasonable and logical idea in the history of mankind, yet there will always be someone who disagrees.

Someone will have an idea how to make icons better, and some surly idiot will enter and say "Just play full real, then you don't have to worry about it"

Pressing a button 6 times is not a "few" it is twice as much as a few. You is wrong.

VOL_Jon wrote:

Auto trim is a bad idea. If you think about it, it is almost immposible, since it would be fighting your stick movements. What if you are pulling the stick back? Will auto trim then try to level your plane? And if auto trim means the plane will trim for level flight based on speed alone, then you might as well just redo the plane FM and eliminate trim altogether. There is no such thing as trim cheating. Instead, there are pilots who don't know how make the most of the control surfaces of the game, which are available to all at any time.

- Trim speed should be setup with a stamina limit, the
- more it is used the longer it takes to move it.

You are close to a good idea here. Instead of sloth trim all around, it should be fast near the center, and slower near the edges. (on an exponential gradient) This way pilots can still have the precision of IL2 yet not be able to go from one max to the other instantaneously.

If you would like to discuss this further then start a thread about it. This thread is about cowl buttons.

Please ask this in the General Discussion forum. Prop pitch and superchargers are explained in the manual as well. Radiator is opened to cool the engine. When closed the plane goes faster (and may have increase the engine's protection from bullets) Supercharger is for cetain planes only, and it has 2 settings, one for below a specified altitude, and one for above that specified altitude.

Yep, a "R" and "Shift+R" combination for opening/closing the rads would be useful.

How about only 1 button for up and down

1 click for Open Radiator more (down) and a double click for close Radiator more (up).

Just like the mouse 1 click and double click.

Would save me a button on my joystick!

How about "Cntrl+R" Cycles Open,8,6,4,2,close

and "Shift+R" Cycles Closed,2,4,6,8,Open

And "R" is Automatic Only (for the newskers)

I hate having to go from open to auto & then close

Auto is worthless IMO

Actually I think the thing that is missing is feedback
on how open the radiator already is. Maybe in some
cockpits there are levers and the positions correspond
to radiator state? It would depend on the plane, but
some of the cockpits have levers that move as you change
mixture, etc. You just need to look for them. However
in real life is is easy to glance down and check a lever's
position, but not in a sim. That's one of the nice things
about Janes WW2 Fighters - whilst having the ability to
repeat instruments at eye level is unrealisitic in one
sense, on the other hand it gets over the restriction
on view management in simulations using current technology,
until the point we all have 3D headset goggles, head
and eye motion tracking, force feedback suits, and chairs
that tip to give a sensation of movement.

becuase ive got throttle, elevator trim, flaps, and prop pitch on sliders and i have one left i can do nothing with right now
and cowl flaps would make the most sence on it

good idea

the interesting question is with two keys should it then be implemented as a cyclic system the way it now is allowing one touch toggle from open to close and back again or should it work like current trim or flap controls where once it is full open or full closed the key no longer has an effect

Yeah, this was asked for since the first few weeks of release, it is a pain in the arse. But the topic or request was quickly buried or anti-whined to death.

2 buttons for radiator control, here here.

For anyone that has a Cougar HOTAS, programing H4 works well for the radiator, working it up and down with 1 button.

Whilst Im ok with the rad settings as they are (but yet can see your point totally, RBJ) I am curious;

When I set the rad to 'auto', it doesn't seem to cool as effectively as when the rad is set to 'open'. Surely if the engine is overheating, the automatic setting will open the rad as fully as possible? <confused>

Still, I must admit it can be a pain, but I have the luxury of having all my keys (yes, *all* of them) mapped to my joystick, and when I do use the rad, I tend to open it right up, cool the engine and then close it as I start my run...a few seconds into which I promptly get owned /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

You dont even need 2 keys just leave it on R & use Shift & cntrl to change cycling direction........

"Cntrl+R" Cycles Open,8,6,4,2,close

"Shift+R" Cycles Closed,2,4,6,8,Open

"R" is Automatic
