View Full Version : Was the Mig3 really that bad?

I hate trying to fly this plane- it sloooow to accelerate, cant turn well, roll is only average, and cant take a hit.
When i'm flying LW planes i love it when they turn up. All i have to do is get behind them for a short burst to turn them into smoking ruins.
If they get behind me it doesnt matter if i go vertical or horizontal- they bleed E so quickly they are soon at a disadvantage.
Compared to other VVS planes they are as fragile as a fragile thing that gets hit with a hard object(i apologise for my lack of imagination regarding an appropriate metaphor).

Were they really such a dud aircraft?
Why did they persist in making so many of them?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Still waiting on my DVD. Since the start MiG-3 is a more careful fly especially at low
speeds which to me is under 320 kph, about 200 mph in any decently fast warbird.

Treat that plane like a thoroughbred and it will give you speed, lots of speed! Keep it
trimmed always. Before the MiGs and Yaks appeared in numbers, the fast German bombers
got through to terrible effect. So here is a plane that could go from ground to intercept
where many others could not. Even IL2's were used as interceptors. The first ones, single
seat went after bombers.

I suppose that's where my experience with this sim misleads from reality. All my time in this game is offline and mainly with campaigns that involve action close to the front, such as Rebirth of Honor.
Migs down low are an easy kill- i find i really have to hammer the I-16's and Yaks hard to guarantee a kill. Without cannon's i cant hurt them, but i can still kill Migs with the MG peashooters.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The MiG was designed for and excels at high altitude intercepts. It should be flown not too disimilarly to a Fw190, which is to say fast, straight and attacking from above in a slashing bounce. Energy fight with it and keep it high if the mission allows.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Think of it in the context of when it was used.

MiG-3 is faster than 109E on the deck, and sustained turn equal or better. I've always had good results with the MiG-3.

Pre-42 it's one of the best planes.

Best plane of 1941 when the P39D2 is not around.

Against 109F2 it can fight above 5500m,against 109E at al altitudes.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

When I started to play IL2, the Mig3U was one of my favourite rides. It definitely has some great advantages, if used right, but you really have to keep an eye on your energy.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

MiG-3 is by far the best soviet fighter of 1941 in the game. It's fragile, has mostly weak armament and poor elevator at high speed, but it's fast and it can climb and even turn very well. It's definitely better than Bf 109 E and can fight successfully even Bf 109 F. The higher you are the more performance you have..

AM-38 version is a beast at low altitudes, you can outrun, outturn, outclimb anything..

U version is really good but sadly it's not very common on servers.. (as only a couple of planes was used in 1943 AFAIK)<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

AFAIK it was the fastest fighter in the world when entered in service (1940?) and very good at high altitude...

what if the germans would have done a strategic high alt bombing campaign agaist Soviet Union...

MiGs had very poor combat record that's for sure. While they were pretty fast even at low alt their handling qualities were poor. In hands of a good pilot it could hold it's own vs 109E, in hands of a poorly trained pilot using inadequate tactics it was a deathtrap.

In game they are significantly better in terms of handling and general maneuverability then the pilot accounts describe them. They are somewhere between 109E and F.

The Mig 3UD was the first aircraft that I took up when IL2 was first released. I liked it very much, but fell away from its use when more aircraft made the scene. Flying campaigns such as "Czech Wars" put me back in the Mig 3ud again. This time my skills were better developed and my understanding of the aircraft resulted in better results. The cockpit layout is simple but very well thought out. Possibly my favorite along with the Beaufighter.

Intercepting bombers was the best role that I found since the aircraft has speed and can sustain damage and still be controlled. The fast speed and weight of the aircraft requires more thought and planning than something like a Hurricane, but it still is one of my favorite rides.

That's pretty much the story of very hot aircraft for their time -- Camel, P-38, F-104, etc... but the MiG was cut off early before it had a chance to develop and correct training established as happened with the other examples, as the Luftwaffe posed no strategic air threat.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I used to hate the Mig-3, but after spending more time in it, I have gotten to appreciate it.

The Mig is a B&Z plane, you just cant dive very far in it. It does however gain speed quickly in a dive, and flown properly, completely dominates E model 109's, and can surprise the hell out of F models as well. The Mig is VERY fast for an early war plane, and while it isnt a great turner, its at least adequate. 4.071 does seem to have the Mig holding E a little better than before, and that helps immensely.

The MG aramament means you need to get very close and give them a good solid burst, but it can kill reliably.

The trick to the Mig is not to slow down, period. Low and slow = dead Mig. Get your speed up and stay that way and the Mig is a good plane.

There is also a signifigant difference in the other models of the Mig as well.

The Mig 3 UD shaves a little time off the turn, but also climbs better. Not a huge improvement, but sill helps.

Mig 3 2x12.7mm basically a UD with better hitting power, still not enough ammo though.

Mig 3 2x20mm, for an early war bird, this variant is pretty stinking nice. At altitude, this is a really good fighter, fast, and very good hitting power. Ammo is limited, but it hits HARD!

The Mig 3 AM-38 is a completely different bird. This is a down low dogfighter, and usually surprises the 109 jocks. Super fast down low, a better turner than the 109, and very good accelleration and climb. A dog at high alt, but if your down low (like a lot of online fights) the AM-38 is a killer bird. Armamrent is slightly better than the original (1 extra 12.7mm) but ammo is still limited.

I really like the AM-38 online, it can run down anything down low, and its climb rate down low will often catch the 109's by surprise.

The Mig 3 is tempremental and fragile, but its not a bad plane, it just takes a different set of skills to really make it shine. The AM-38 however is an almost completely different plane, and its killer for the time period.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
