I'm thinking, she's not the most maneuverable dogfighter, but as long as I could jettison those big-a*s*s floats, I'd give it a whirl.

I'd just have to brush up on my beached whale landings. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I can imagine seeing this Spitfire floatplane against the A6M2N Rufe in some combat missions for this game. Now that would be intresting! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Only five Spitfires were converted to floatplanes, of which one never flew. None saw any action.

MkVb floatplane W 3760 flew at top speed of 251 mph @ sea level, 324 mph @ 19,500 feet during trials at Helensburgh, near Glasgow. Spring 1943.

The only converted MkIX (MJ892) was re-converted for land based operations.

In 1940, Spitfire MkI R6772 was fitted with Blackburn Roc floats. Trials were abandoned after the Norwegian fjords that it was envisaged this aircraft would operate from were lost to the Allies. The project was ressurected in 1942 when plans were made to operate from clandestine bases in the Aegean using converted Mkvb's. The plan was abandoned in 1943 after the Germans occupied key Aegean islands following the Italian surrender. Six floatplane conversion sets were sent out to the Middle East where three Spitfires were converted and used for a time in the defence of Alexandria. The MkIX floatplane had a maximum speed of 377 mph @ 19,700ft - making it the fastest floatplane in the world.

OMG, that picture (secudos sig) finally confirms that the Spitfire is really an UFO! Seems like it just came back from the moon to rescue Laika. Need more proof?

I know the Spits' floats were big but they make the plane look like it's developed a case of elephantitis of the landing gear.
