View Full Version : Crashes to Desktop and JVM.dll Errors - TIPS

Some of you may be experiencing a Crash to Desktop while playing IL2:FB. Sometimes you'll get an error message about the JVM.dll, sometimes it's just CTD with no notice. Even some of us that feel they have their system totally "in control" are getting this crash.

One possible relation is if you have an nVIDIA card and the newest RC of Riva Tuner... Read on.

Here's some tips and some advice (but not a solution-yet).

<div style="font-face:trebuchet ms;font-size:12px;background:#222222;color:#ffffff;">

<LI>If your computer is overclocked, use the default clock setting and CPU multiplier for a day or two while testing FB.

<LI>If your Video Card is overclocked, use the default driver and/or hardware settings for the clock speed of your memory (this is easiest to do if you're using Riva Tuner).

<LI>If you're running WHQL nVIDIA Forceware 52.16, uninstall, reboot, and reinstall a version of the nVIDIA drivers as suggested in Oleg's Thread Here (http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=Olegmaddoxreadyroom&id=zucvm).

<LI>If you're using any of the Check Six "Java" file packages, Sun's Java Package as a replacement of what shipped with FB, you're kinda on your own here. Test a fresh install and patch of FB to 1.2 RC01 as outlined in my post here (http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=Olegmaddoxreadyroom&id=ztyax).

<LI>Although likely not necessary, it wouldn't hurt to reinstall DirectX 9.x from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/directx).

<LI><span style="background:yellow;color:black;">There is an error file generated</span> in your Forgotten Battles folder immediately when this crash occurs. I believe it ends in *.pid or something like that. It's a simple text file. Attach this file to an e-mail or copy the contents of the file to the clipboard and paste into an e-mail message to the bug reporting email AND to the Technical Support forum.

</div>

If any of these steps begin to clear the problem up, start with one thing and change it back to the way you had it (e.g. overclocking, etc.) until the crash occurs again. It can be a tedious process, but it's the only way to isolate problems.

The Java engine has not changed in IL2:FB since the CD installation.

tolwyn.com, thank you for responing to my post concerning my FB v1.2RC01 CTD problem.

The problem is the JVM.dll error.
I recently replaced the MS Java VM with Sun's Java to increase security of IE6.0.

The Sun Java About contents are:

Java Runtime Enviroment, Standard Edition 1.4.2_01,
Default Virtual Machine Version 1.4.2_01-b06
Java Plug-in 1.4.2_01.

I will re-install FB per your post, Getting to RC01.
I will report results of re-install.

Below are the contents of the FB pid error log:

An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.

Hi.

As far as I know (read: I could be 100% wrong), having Sun's Java installed for your Computer OS will not (should not) affect IL2.

This is because IL2 (FB) uses it's own implementation of JAVA that should be used exclusive to itself.

Some people were using Sun's VM / Java stuff INSIDE of their game installation folders replacing the Java stuff from what the game shipped with.

Although I'm honestly not sure if one affects the other.

I've run about 20 different tests between Sun and MS VM. Without Sun java on my system no CTD's, with Sun on my system over a period of 3 days. CTD in each time I had played FB. A few users who had this issue uninstalled sun and installed MS VM....no more CTD's. Just food for thought and may not solve everything.

FB is very sensitive to ram OC,incorrect timings or fsb speeds, mismatched modules also can cause errors of this type under load for some reason. Alot of users get a false jvm error due to a memory issue and jvm crashes generating a report.

Re-installed FB per Tolwyn.com's Getting to 1.2 RC post.

Flew same FMB mission for 56 min. w/o CTD.

Sun Java still installed.

When I originally installed the RC01 file it was named
RC_01.zip (15,964 KB).

On the FB re-install I used RC_01new.zip (15,964 KB) per Tolwyn post.

Are RC_01.zip and RC_01new.zip the same file renamed?

If not, could RC_01.zip be the CTD/Java problem?

My pid error file refer to java, so calls to it maybe causing the CTD. If I understand want the file is indicating.

Is installing Sun's Java, with FB already installed, effecting FB's implementation of Java?

Is upgrading Sun's Java in the future going to require a re-install of FB?

Could this problem have been resolved by simply copying the FB java files before installing Sun's Java?
{They must be contained in the cab files and would have to be backed-up from \bin\ folder, not sure exactly which files, 3 are easily id'ed but there may be 1 or 2 more.}

rc01 and rc01new are different files....check dates to be absolutely sure. Somone could have renamed the RC01 download from where you originally D/L

should be fine...maybe first d/l was corrupt a few users have fixed their issues just by redownloading the patches and installing.....strange enough but it worked.

If I remember my CCNA stuff correctly-- /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Corrupt packets should have been caught and have been retransmitted by FTP, but if the errors were in the files to being with the errors would not have been caught by FTP.

If I'm correct, the problem was a bad file not a bad DL.

What ever the problem --- I've got to blow away a couple of suspect files before they create more trouble later on.

Thanks for the input and clarification Hunter82.

depends if they were dropped due to retransmit errors....ftp has been very busy lately.May also be the reason for the 'renamed' file from RC01 to RC01new in your download (bad file).

What files are CheckSix "Java" file packages, refered to in tip #4 of the original post by tolwyn.com?

Tolwyn: FYI

Had CTD problems on old FB installation due to java error and submitted bug report.

Re-installed FB per tolwym.com post Getting to 1.2RC using RC01new.zip. Flew for 56 minutes without problem.

Today flying a Single Mission at point I was shot down recieved expection breakpoint dialog box.

Below is FB pid log file contents.

Note: the link to SUN at bottom to report error, which I will do.

I have sumitted second bug reprot.

PS: I have been using IL-2 Stab 3.4 in both cases.

Is this one of the Check SIx Java File packages you mentioned?

I removed Sun's Java from my system and just CTD. FB has not generated a error file (hs_pidXXXX) for the last several crashes, so I can't tell what the error is.

Hope the problem is resolved before 1.2 final release. Really like the Normandy maps and would hate to be stuck at 1.11/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
