Just got off MOH_FOX's server flying early war. Jumped around a bit, then kinda settled in on the Zero...WOW!

She turns sooooooo well, has a decent punch when cannons are brought to bear, and jinking from boom and zoomers was...intuitive, for lack of a better word. I got more air-to-air kills tonight than any other night in IL2 FP/AEP/PF. (died just about as much, too).

There was a FW-190 A4 driver who had my number, though (Mr. Falli of one of the JG squads). But other than that, she was a blast to fly.

Many kudos to my teammates as well (Soda and Impala). Comms helped immeasurably.

I dunno--I just had to share my WOW experience with flying something other than my trusty P-51. (now if I could just mount the canopy of the 51 on a zero...).

The zero is spectacular, except when you get targeted. It flames like a torch as soon as a bullet passes the plane within a metre

as long your foe is flying slower than 350km/h IAS http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

above the Reisen is like a bus !

yes, as pingu says, the late war zeros are better now

but i always go with the "best" zero ever ( in FB), the A6M3

take one up over 4000m and freak the D9 drivers out, hehe

I find the Zero similar to Yak.Overheats quickly,slow,good climb,great turner but....SLOW!!!!!

Recently I had more sorties in Zero.If you`re flying against fast airplanes it is very frustrating.Early Zeros are not much faster than bombers they escort so unless you do a close escort, you can try to shoot something and only try.

Overall superb for fighter vs fighter combat but for sortie purposes it is sloppy.

You can`t run from flak, you will not catch up with Hurri, you will end flight from the first burst you get..You will fly 390kph max. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Frankyboy, et al--

In a dive, I was routinely getting above 550 kph and catching foes down on the deck (<500m). The controls got much more cement like, but I was still able to catch all kinds of foes.

I tried the M3 a bit, but found it not so nimble--at least down low. Didn't try above 4000m, though, as the fights were typically under 2500m.

I typically have problems getting air-to-air kills with a P-51 (my poor gunnery, 50s being less effective in snapshot B n Z conditions than cannons, etc.). Although the 'Stang is a great multi-purpose plane (in mid and late war servers), the Zero I felt was really in its element in the early war plane set.

Granted, faster planes can cause great frustration, but I just wasn't seeing that many folks "get away" from me. Yak 9s, Lagg3's, 109s, Spits.... I was tailing guys back to their base (minimal to no AAA near bases on MOH_FOX's map to help with lag), peppering them along the way, and usually getting the Enemy Destroyed message.

At one point, FOX and I were on opposite sides and the only ones flying Zeroes. We got into a treetop turnfest near their base. But I had entered in the fight with a better position. Well, FOX pulled into a tight, tight level turn, hoping one of his teammates would blast me off his tail because we were flying such a predictable circle. Ever so slowly, I was gaining a few degrees per circle on him. Every 30 or so seconds, one of his teammates would make a pass at me--but just as they lined up for the shot and got in close enough, I would rudder jink and I would either sustain minimal or no damage (the view from the cockpit is pretty good) and they would pass through our little circle. There was 3 to 4 of his teammates doing this, BTW (enemy icons were off so it was easy to count them). After (no joking) surviving 8 to 10 passes like this (what seemed like an ETERNITY), me sustaining a bit of damage, but still flying and turning well (??), I was able to finally pull enough lead to hit FOX's Zero with a cannon burst (big fireball).

I'm thinking to myself, "Although that was satisfying, I'm dead meat now." But I kept turning, and jinking at treetop level. I figured I'd head for home...what the heck.

For a while, I was seemingly unmolested after leaving the furball. But then, I detected someone closing in from my rear quadrant. Faint, but definitely a "dot". As I could begin to discern wings on the dot, I had to make a judgement call as I was nearly at the threshold of my airfield--try to land or fight?

Trying to land earlier in the night had gotten me "killed", so I went with fight. Within two maneuvers, the agile Zero turned the tables on bogey (a LF Spit V). A squirt from the cannons separated a wing and that was that (another Enemy Aircraft Destroyed).

I landed at 100 kmh with the surprisingly forgiving landing gear (earlier in the night I did a field landing, all shot up with absolutely no problem). 200 pts. for that sortie. 17 kills for the night.

I retired for the night feeling on top of the world.

I wonder what team tactics could be developed for the Zero? From my investigation of the subject, the Japanese did not develop team tactics as part of their training during WW2. The Americans had to (re: Thatch Weave, team boom and zoom, etc.). This would be an interesting discussion.

well, you f³ught Zero vs Zero , so far in understand - so what ?!?!?!

and at all others , sry, wrong tactic !
even the real Spitfire pilots in northern austraulia lerned fast NOT to turn with a Zero , espacially not at low speed...

the Zero is a very good plane for the casual slow speed, low level dogfights that you can find on most dogfightservers (i avaiod them like hell - im a COOP pilot) - thats all - and no surprise
