I need some help. I'm looking at some 20.1" widescreen LCD monitors -
Viewsonic VA2021wb 20.1" http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddi...alueseries/va2012wb/ (http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/valueseries/va2012wb/)
Samsung 204B 20.1" http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001226 I want to know if this info posted by Bladie http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/63110913/m/850...411004742#7411004742 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/63110913/m/8501033742/r/7411004742#7411004742) will work on that type of monitor as well. One thing I've read about these LCDs is they only render 16million colors and these monitors optimal res is 1680x1050 @ 60hz. The in game view is stretched and not as crisp as my 21" CRT. I know I can't get to that same crispness with the LCD, but will fixing the size in the conf file help clear things up a bit more? I can see dots, etc. quite well on my current older CRT and don't want to lose that capability, but I've got to get a new monitor as the CRT is nearing death.

Any help for a novice LCD buyer on a budget (around $350.00) would be greatly appreciated guys. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Im planning on purchasing the Samsung 204B probably in a couple of weeks. Spec wise its a great monitor and being 1600x1200 means no messing with oddball 16:9 resolutions.

Anyone know about that Samsung? Looks better than the Viewsonic, and I like the fact that it's a 4:3 instead of the 16:10. Won't that make it more "normal" looking?

Yes it will. In general Samsung makes a great LCD monitor and if you go into a store and have a look at the banks of LCD's usually the Samsungs are best or second best.

That Samsung you're looking at looks QUITE good. I've got the Samsung 173P+ 17in and its SUPERB. Took me a while to get used to it because its so sharp and bright compared to my old LCD.

How's your SA with it? Can you still pick up the "dots" at distance well on it? Colors in game look good still?

I just saw this post Dart. I handed down my older Samsung 192N to one of my kids and replaced it a few months ago with the 204B. The picture is outstanding and I would highly recommend it. After flying on the 19" (with the lower response time and lower contrast ratio) the newer 204B looks incredible.

My SA is not negatively affected and is probably better. I run the game at 1280x960 (yes, I know it's not the native res, but it's still higher than the 1024x768 I was running before).

I have nothing but high praise for the Samsung 204B.

Thanks guys. Great to hear TB. I just ran out and got th 204B last night, and when I hooked it up to my comp and turned it on all I could say was "Wow!" Very nice picture indeed. I'll be putting it through its paces the next few days to really see how it does, but I'm very optimistic so far. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

yeah good too hear some feeback on it. I will be using mine at native res tho for sure, Im already running at 1280x1024 and very used to it, but I feel Im choking my X1900XTX at this "low" res and I intend on going Crossfire soon as well so I cant justify that without going at least 1600x1200 so the Samsung 204B is the perfect monitor for the job

Posted this yesterday, but seems was lost in the forums issues.

I picked up the samsung 204B yesterday afternoon after following this post. All I can say is WOW. Out of the box, it looks great. 1600x1000 looks very nice in game and on the desktop. I got to fly last night some and saw immediate improvement in my SA and gunnery. I expected an improvement but not like this. I wish I would have upgraded to an LCD even before getting hotas or pedals. I am replacing a hp crt that is ~6-7 yrs old to put everything in context.

system info: 2800 AMD, ati 9800 pro, 1 gig ram.

I'm in the market next month or so for a 19" (can't go above 200), and I was just looking at a Samsung rated at 2ms response and 700:1 for 199.

Is there an issue with response times being too fast? I thought I'd seen this somewhere? I was going to be happy with 8ms, just wondered if there is any advantage with the 2ms.

Just fyi I'm replacing a 3yo 15" Medion LCD so anything will be a massive improvement

If your looking at 200 max, the Hyundai L90D+ is probably the best buy on the market.

BTW 2ms response time is the minimum but not the average response time. Most of the time it will be well up from that. It probably only acheives it on the post screen when booting up!!

Thanks Mondo, Hyundai was what I was originally thinking of.

Is the L90D the same as a B90A but with speakers? Specs look the same, but the speakerless version is 40 odd quid cheaper at Scan.

I'd double check all the technical details on hyundais site to see if they are identical, I don't think they are though as theres allot more to it than view angles and response times etc. I doubt a couple of really **** little speakers would put an extra 40 on the price though.

I seem to have found it - the B90A has only an analog output, the L90D a digital and analog output.

So the next question is, do I need a digital output? I don't think this rig has a DVI-D output, do the most up-to-date graphics cards come with it? (thinking ahead http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif)

I'm happy to report back on my new Samsung 204B after having flown on it for a bit. So far so great! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I'm happier than I had expected to be going to an LCD from a 21" Trinitron. It has taken some getting used to for my eyes, but so far I'm quite happy. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

DVI is a must for an LCD/TFT. DVI outputs are pretty common even on old GFX cards, I had one on a Geforce 4Ti4200 which I had years ago.

Don't go with the analogue only out, it negates allot of the benefits of LCD's, it would be a total waste of money Stathem.

Ah, thanks. I read the blurb on Digital vs Analog, so I could see why it would be a good thing; I'll make sure to check round the back before I commit. My card is a ATi 9600 TX.

Many thanks for your help Mondo.

I expect my Samsung 204B to arrive hopefully Saturday and am excited about its arrival with all the glowing reviews I have read. I look forward to 1600X1200 as my X1900XTX needs to be knocked down a peg in the FPS dept( I swear I hear it snickering at me in 1280x1024 saying "Is that all you got??" )
