View Full Version : SH-IV ????????

Ok, I just read that the next silent hunter will be pacific based US sub style sim. Stuff that. Can anyone tell me honestly which way it will be going, surely a version offering people a choice + expansion options would be better. I like where I am right now, all I would really want is a full walk through version, with an option for assigning watch crews, and none of the silly (but sometimes funny) AI bugs that exist at present.
A US based sub sim game? Surely more imagination is required

What is another alternative? Playing a submarine sim as Japan, England... Italy? Making another U-boat sim would water-down this series.

I like the fact that a US based sim is in the picture. They do need to consider giving the player the option of sailing with another nation's navy as well.

And I agree, they need to learn from SHIII. They need to polish the next game so we can encounter little to no bugs at it's release.

Its true. UBI said it them selves. But there will be a Ex. pack for SHIII.

Phew, thats better. All I neded to hear, I don't mind the whole US sub thing doesn't phase me. The thing that annoys me is that Australia & England had equivalent sized sub fleets. The japanese subs had a field day off Australias east coast. In other words, the German U-boats were the cream of the crop, but under that, there are lots to choose from, not just U.S. They get enough credit for everything as is

I wouldnt count your chickens before they hatch, the so called 'built in expansion pack' is a RUMOUR, no one at Ubi has made any offical comment about it.
It may or may not happen, and its not expected to be a seperate release from SHIV, With SH3 approaching its 1 year anaversary, its a bit late to start one now.

With SHIV a little more than a month in to development (we hope) it really is way too early to speculate anyway. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

But we do know there will be one. Don't we? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

if im dragged outa my uboat kicking and screaming, then give me something abit unusual, like a british or an italian sub. or at very least if i have to use a US sub, then put a moddable flag on it and make the officers moddable to make em british (ie- rank boards on their shoulders). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

dont know why, but just cant see myself in a jap sub. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

Ill play an american sub, british sub or german sub but i wont play as a jap sub, i just dont like their theorys like suscide missions and all that

i hope its pacific. i would love it if it was a choice between USN or IJN subs. a whole pacific themed game. and i hope theres more capital and other ships. and there needs to b quite a few Marus. maybe with sum specific orders like during campaigns, like= "track and engage enemy carrier group" but not be required to sink it like in SH2. thats wat im hoping for http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I agree 100% that it needs to be Pacific, another Atlanic game (3rd in a row) would be marketing suicide for Ubi.
There is a divide though, some what Pacific, while some feel the Atlanic isnt finnished...
But its SH4 not SH3.5 after all right?

BUT who says we cant have both?? i personally think they should re-relase Sh3 on the same disk as SH4 pacific, touched up with all the improvments they apply to SH4.

Imagine if you could play as German British US and japanese submarines?

Look at it this way, the Atlantic campaign is already done! it just needs some more german and italian traffic moddelled, in the North sea and the Med,

The U-boats are already done! and just need to be imported from SH3, though they do need to model the type XIV!!! The Germans could still be included in the pacific for their limited role in the south china seas (Monsun boats)

They could model playable S,T,U,V class submarines for the Brits. (U and V are virtually identical anyway, like a VIIB is to a VIIC)
The Brits hunting grounds would be the Med, baltic and north seas. Later on they can join the pacific campaign with the U.S against the japanese (T-class subs were used here)

The U.S and Japanese Subs would all need to be done from sratch along witht the entire pacific Campaign! that will be the main priority for SH4
after all.

Think about it, they have the Game Engine (which will need some tweaking), Campaing Editor, a ton of ships already modlelled, and the best part of two years to work on the project, it would be rude not to do it this way!

Then Just think what a destroyer command addon could offer for my fantasy version of SH4!!!
The end product could be both theatres, with 4 sides, with playble Destroyers and Subs.
Now that would keep almost everyone of us happy so long as they maintain and improve on level of detail that was in SH3!

I know the more die hard simmers here might frown upon this idea, as they worry that four nations subs = less detail for each one, and yes, more content = trade offs theres no doubt about it.
But dont you think four nations subs is going to add to more lasting playabilty than say- being able to visit all your subs compartments?, lets face it we spend most of the game staring at the nav map anyway!

Did you ever play Silent Hunter 1, the very first in the series ??

It was an absolute joy to play even then with the dated graphics/game engine. Silent Hunter was USN vs Japanese Imperial Navy and it was the sim that put Silent Hunter firmly on the stage as the best most well executed sub sim out.

USN Submarines were more superior than the German U-boats, specially with firepower. You will enjoy having 6 forward tubes and 4 aft in the superb Gato Class subs and action around the Pacific Ocean including the Marshal islands, the Gilberts, Truk Atol, Solomon Islands, Japan, Indonesia, Indian Ocean, China Ocean, Sulu Sea etc will keep you glued to your PC for hours !

You can also expect a very high merchant kill count and the IJN did not have sophisticated radar, sonar, ASDIK or anything near it. They used quantity rather than quality of DD's to hunt you down with their somewhat basic sonar gear but spent more time at it pinging on the surface for hours and hours in most cases.

The US subs also used a Bathythermograph which detects thermal layers in the water something the Germans never even considered. This device WILL save your life in many many missions if used and interperated correctly.

As an Englishman I never realy enjoyed sinking British ships in SHIII. I played the Sim and thought it was great but my heart was never in it. So to go back to the USN vs IJN is a great and most welcomed move by the Developers.

I hope they implement the huge aircraft carrier battles aswell. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The subs played no role in them but it would be great to witness such an gigantic air attack on an carrier with the SH-3/SH-4 engine. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A word for Destroyer Command 2 (got it right this time) woudn't go amiss either. As far as air action is concerned, the absolute minimum would be a flyable Sunderland or Catalina.

I actually wouldn't at all be surprised if SHIV took a leaf out of DW's book.
