Hello Everyone,

Like some others, I am new to this game (only been playing for a couple of weeks). Still overwhelmed by the steep learning curve and advanced controls.

Firstly, us new guys are very impressed with this game. I jumped into a campaign just to see how it runs - wow! The graphics are great. I even managed (on easy) to win a medal for shooting down three planes.

But for now I am staying with Quick Missions and Mission Builder and practicing with one plane. Having said all this, I have the following two questions:

(a) I have set the game on Realism but prefer icons, padlock and external views on. I realize this topic generates a lot of debate. I wish to avoid such discussion. My question - Are there advanced players who prefer these settings with feeling guilty?

(b) I'm at work and don't have access to my manual. Saw in some of the screenshots smoke from the planes' wings and can vaguely remember reading about this. What is the command to issue smoke for display purposes?

I've been playing since the demo, and I don't feel guilty about having Icons, Padlock & External Views. And you shouldn't because:

In real life, you can spot a plane a long way off because your eyes will look for motion, and will see at very high resolution, while on the screen it's quite difficult. 5km is a reasonable range to recognise many of the plane types in the game, but this is not possible when it is a blob of pixels.

Padlock makes up for the awkwardness of trying to track targets with the mouse controlling your view, which is hard when you already need 1 hand for the joystick, 1 for the throttle, and 1 for the keyboard. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif In real life, you can follow moving objects easily with your eyes.

External views just look good. I don't think the F6 view is good to have online, but I always use flyby views & external views for offline play to fill the time between base & target area.

I don't consider myself an advanced player though. Why worry, it's just a game. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

to expand a bit on (a)

i would say there are players of all standards that play all different settings - alot of people here tend to get a bit snobby about externals and padlock. - whilst "full real" has it's value with immersion you'll never get to enjoy half the beautiful graphics this game has to offer.

as i said before - play what you like - and don't let others push you into thinking one way is better than the other - or that someone is a better pilot because they don't use this or that.

i personally play lots of different settings depending on how i feel at the time - this game has so much to offer - i think it's best to explore all options

once again welcome to the forums and FB -i hope you get as much fun out of it as i have /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Welcome to FB, MarkOHearn.

Realism settings are controversial, and many people have their own preferences. It is not anything that has to do with 'guilt', but there are pros and cons to each individual settings.

For instance, I myself prefer 'real' settings, but have an exception towards icons. For me, I don't really agree that a gamer should have a 2.0/2.0 eyesight with latest PC specs and large monitor, to enjoy the most out of the game. So I would prefer a game with icons listing just the distances, or other types of icons with modified options.

Try to figure out the setting you really like. But however, please do note, that starting off from "realistic settings", in the first place, would be a lot more helpful for you to become better in this game. The frustration levels are high, but you also learn that much.

I would personally recommend you a setting of:

* No external views
* No padlock
* Icons on
* Speed bar on
* Mini-map path on
* Map icons on
* The rest of in-flight realism options all set to 'realistic'

From that point, try to work your way up.

Welcome, use whatever settings you like, but you'll probably find that as you get more used to it you'll turn some of the more 'unreal' things off. It's all down to personal preference though.
If you get online one day then look for a server that has the settings that you are comfortable with, there's no point in jumping into a 'full-real' situation if you haven't practised it.

Above all, have fun.
Cheers!

Ladies & gentlemen, this is the captain speaking. Thankyou for choosing to fly Mandarin Airlines. Those passengers sitting on the left-hand side of the aeroplane please make yourselves comfortable. Those sitting on the right... please look to your left!

Exactly, play it like you like it, its your game. Dont let the uber whiners try to tell you your less then a man because you use some of the in game aid. Personnally, I love padlock but dont like icons. ( maybe just the dot that appears at 1 to 1.5 km is ok) For me, i really need padlock. I cant follow planes that well with the hat and i dont have track IR, so padlock is great, but we've seen a big downfall in padlock usage since track IR has become more wide spread. Some dont like it because they cant use it, others because they got their new spiffy track ir and they now disable padlock to get an advantage over those without it. Some guys claim they are all full real thsi and full real that, yet they use the track IR and dont consider it an in game aid. Well, I tried track ir and its great, i want one, gotta have it and will get one soon, but its for certian an in game aid, and will give you an advantage over those with out. Especially if you disable padlock. And dont talk about how a faster copmputer is an advantage over other too. That may be, but track ir is much more of an advantage then a faster computer gives you over someone with an older system. never under stood that defense.
