So, it is now March 1942. I am in command of a IXC U-boat out of Lorient. I am on my 19th patrol. This is my second career, I accidentally deleted my first career after nine patrols when I tried to clear out some of my saved games http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif (BTW, that's a really ******ed system of saving and loading games). Since my 7th patrol on my FIRST career, I have been playing at 100% realism. I am currently running patch 1.03, but will download 1.04 tonight.

Anyway, I have noticed some things that really make this game get really boring after awhile.

First off, there are WAY, WAY too many ships at sea. I couldn't even get across the Atlantic Ocean on my way to my first patrol off the coast of the United States without expending 65% of my ordinance on the way on random single merchants. This is WAY unrealistic, and frankly I get sick of sinking a gozillion of the exact same 4 or 5 types of ships every patrol. Ships where no where near that plentiful.

However, more importantly, this game is really hurting in another, even more important realism department. It is just way too frickin easy! I mean, I can attack a convoy, sink 2 or three ships, go deep, reload, surface, catch back up and attack it agian and again, until I run out of torpedos! In real life, the destroyers would prosecute a U-boat contact for like a 24 hours, pinging it with sonar and dropping depth charges until it either escaped, was destroyed, or had to surface. Either way, it got pinned down and lost the convoy. As it is, when I get spotted by a destroyer (which is very rare indeed), I am only tracked for something like an hour till it gives up, which is LAUGHABLE. Come on, the depth charge attacks are the most exciting part of the game, but a typical destroyer only makes ONE run! What the !@#$. The ease at which I can find and destroy enemy shipping just makes this game very boring at times.
Don't tell me it WAS this easy for the U-boats early in the Battle for the Atlantic. It wasn't. If it was, then Britain would have lost the war VERY quickly. Destroyers and air cover were MUCH more effective than they are modeled in the game, and the ease at which I can evade them both makes sinking ships in this game like popping bubble wrap.

I am awaiting the later stages of the war, where being assigned to a U-boat in the real-life kreigsmarine was like a death sentence. However, based on what I have seen so far, I can't say that I expect to find the game to be much more exciting.

So, are there any mods out there that decrease the number of ships, and/or make destroyers a more potent force to be reckoned with? I'm not asking for MORE destroyers numerically. Numbers won't help when the AI is so dumb. I am asking for smarter ones.

BTW, however, I must say that just about everything else with this game was done VERY, VERY well. Heck, my mom is a school teacher, and when she saw how I did manual targeting and programming of the TDC, she wanted to bring the game in to show her kids!

You will be able to find solutions to most of the issues you brought up here in RUB 1.44, (be aware that the mod only goes well with 1.4b patch).
What the mod does:
1. single merchant routes are reduced to 8% after 1940, you will spend most of your time tracking convoys as a WWII u-boat commander did in reallife.

2. smarter escort: they tweaked all the escort's AI level to ELITE...you asked for it.

3. increased gun loading time to match the historical use of deck guns as a secondary weapon: finishing off damaged vessels or sinking smaller target (say, fishing boats). never again expect to sink a C3 with this http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

4.most importantly, you can now only get a rough diea of the target's heading from radio contacts, no more than what your sound man can tell, which makes ship interception much, much more challenging.

give it a try, RUB 1.44 is simply a different game with similar graphics. highly recommended for hardcore sim fans.

Thanks! This sounds like just what I was looking for... however, I don't want the deck gun load time increased to be unrealistically long as a blind fix for less realism in other areas (lack of enemy response to a surface u-boat attacking merchant vessels). I will try to track down this mod... I just hope I will be able to turn off the long gun loading times option.

That's an easy fix though, simply backup some certain files of the stock game(SUB_GUN.SIM, and shells.zon), put them back in after intalling the mod, you will have your original loading time and shell damage.

cheers

Thanks once again! Just curious, does this RUB mod decrease the amount of CONVOYS also?

Ok, well I figured it out... I will try out a mission tonight, set to leave port for a patrol off of Halifax http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The patch has a typo in it. It says 1.3 but it really is 1.4B. You'll see the new version number on your loading page.

As well as mods, there are other ways to make the game more challenging. I for one think that there are way too many "radio reports" of single ships. On my last patrol I was rounding by Scapa Flow and suddenly there are three singles. The real war Kaleuns did not have such a rich supply of reports like that. I ignore those single contacts. I will attack a single if I spot one. In spite of not tracking down the single contacts, I still get enough singles just by visual contact.

Another self imposed rule is how to deal with your external torpedoes. I do not load them into the boat if the weather is bad, just as in real life. They had to wait for a calm sea and a find a quiet place where they could feel reasonably secure enough to open the hatches and start the download.

If you are playing at 100% and are still not finding the game challenging enough, I think that is a testament to your skill and mastery of the game. I am about to make the jump myself to manual targetting. I just want to finish my current career and start fresh with a new Kaleun.

one final thought: make sure you have a clean intallation before enabling the mod, and it's better off to start a new campaign.

How does people determine there is too many ships in the game? Where is the data? Could it be that we actually hear pretty far with the hydrophone and therefore cove a large area.

How is WWII merchant frequency compared to today. And I remaind you they were small ships back then. Today the frequency is high with BIG ships, so how about then with small ships? And a nation such as great brittain, Im sorry but I think people might confuse many ships with the effect of time compression ...... is there anyone who have data sheets?
