I play LOMAC every now and then, and I still have Flanker 2.5 on the HD. LOMAC may be the better of the two, by Flanker 2.5 runs better on my system.

I fly a bit of Falcon 4: AF now and then (Maybe when I have several months of free time I'll learn how to fly the Viper), and some Crimson Skies. I recently installed CFS3 and Over Flanders Fields after watching The Blue Max. (Which according to my dad was my favorite movie as a little kid... Could've sworn it was Memphis Belle, but with Ursula Andress, who knows? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif)

Mostly, though, you can find me taking the FMB for a spin.

I always thought the civvy sims were useless without a gunsight....picked up FS2004 and found it surprisingly fun. Working my way through the flight school lessons taught me a lot about really basic flight stuff....made me a better sim pilot for sure!

I play both FSX and LOMAC. Been playing LOMAC quite a bit, only started playing it in August or so, infact, I probably play it more than IL2 right now. Going to get Xplane next I think to check out its flight model,

Blackshark actually runs much better than Lomac. It's better optimized and since you're flying slow and low you can turn vis. distance and some other options to low and boost FPS without much cost to graphics.

I have Black Shark, its impressive, but after fooling around with it for a few weeks, I don't really play it anymore. When they come out with fixed wing addons I'll probably get them and keep at it.. helicopter+ground pounding just didn't do it for me,

I only play IL-2 and FSX for a change. I have played IL-2 off and on from the original(never been very good). I like FSX, but find it can bore me at times. I used to play B-17: The Mighty Eighth and really enjoyed the level bombing.

I'll actually fire up Red Baron (the first one that came out in 1991) with DosBox every once in a while, it was the first flight sim I ever played and I became addicted.

I'm this --&gt;&lt;-- close to getting a WW2OL subscription, though...

If you're after WW2OL for a decent flight sim experience I'd pass....

The flight is probably the worst part of the game- especially if you're coming to it from IL2, or other dedicated air combat programs.

You'll understand if you were to play on the axis side and your BF109 is out maneuvered by a Havoc/DB-7.... Or when the same mentioned aircraft can run away from you even when you come in from a dive..

I've flown this sim every since I first saw Il2 Sturmovik on a store shelf, and every other version of this series.

I've tried many others - but nothing could keep me away from Il2. The mods just made it more interesting and kept my attention.

LOMAC FC, I have but it gets little attention - possibly unfairly. It's certainly a complete sim, but my heart and soul was with this one and particularly all the friends I made in the Il2 community.

That was until Thanksgiving. We've been flying, learning and exploring Black Shark over at TX for some time. We all love Il2, but can't seem to stop playing Black Shark.

I cannot say enough good about that product, it might even get me back into Flaming Cliff's.

Two mods in Il2 might get me back over the holidays, both being Channel maps - Canon's and 352nd's incredible works. I also think I smell (guessing) a new unified installer but who knows.

If the Rise of Flight and Storm of War are anywhere close to Black Shark in fidelity and immmersion, then this may be the richest year for flight sims ever.

Black Shark is incredible and you don't need huge frame rates to play it, as was said above.

I own just about all of them. . .but there are some that really shine above the rest. Condor Competition Soaring Sim is one of the best at flight physics (the singel best aerobatic flight model ever made - but of course there are no powered flyable aircraft)and does an exceptional job modeling wind and its interactions with obstructions, cloud formation and dissipation with associated atmospheric instability (convective systems are well modeled) and the various sources of lift, of course IL-2 is great fun, and offers a rather nice feel of flight, and while still severly lacking in many regards, it's one of the better sims at edge of the envelope flight. I use FS2004 and FSX for teaching virtual ground schools and doing "dual instruction" via shared cockpit in FSX, and of course for my own fun or keeping shark on IFR procedures, I've used X-plane for the same things, plus it also serves as a digital wind tunnel for rudimentary flight testing of concept aircraft before we build scale models, AeroFly Pro Deluxe is a great R/C sim that I enjoy flying, I flew on two formation aerobatic teams in LockOn (but the lack of clickable cockpits killed it as a combat sim for me), Black Shark is just awesome, I've still got all sorts of other things, but most are on the shelf. The above are the ones that still get play.

Looking at Black Shark I notice that the trees stand out to much - the color is too different from the background. And I note sharp angles on the river. I fly EAW which is so old that when I see these brand new sims I expect these kind of things NOT to exist. I must expect too much.

B17 "The Mighty Eighth" was my first Flight sim.

Had the rather unusual concept of having R/l actors moving about to positions of plane if you ordered them to.

I couldn't get the hang of it at all http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Also have "Fighter Squadron" By Activision. Don't remember playing it though.

B17 was a very fun sim. I just may have to dig that out again sometime. The intro was very good. My wife got that for me for Christmas several years ago...not sure of the year. When it was new. I named the characters after my grandfather's bomber crew.

That was a weird sim. Hardly any single player content to speak off, only a few maps, but a lot of potential, particularly with the open programming. I've seen a lot of add-ons for that game.

It was advanced in its FM modelling from what I remember reading (I played it too) but the planes seemed to often feel a bit light. If bits fell off the fluttered down like paper which was a bit odd. As you say - lots of addons.

B17-II? Certainly there were a host of options for selecting delays for sticks of bombs and a lot to learn with the Norden. AFAIK they decided to add flyable 109, P-47, etc rather than have all versions of the B-17, but to be fair the majority were the -F and -G.

Well Condor is a great Sim no doubt beside it's more simple graphics but the sim look real clean and smooth.. Fun also many other sims can take a lesson from it as well as IL2.. ( 6DOF )

I love IL2 even with it's fast cessna FM alike..
Engine management is too simple that actually make mediocre pilot a chance to fly with a balance feeling. ( now 6DOF )

BOB2 "no online".. it's enough for a no go for me but it has some great innovations and mass flight war feeling. Great for offliners ( 6DOF )

Black-Shark, The best Helico Sim ever made with a great system simulation and clickable pit ( a must to have when there are soo much commands )
the down side is after a while you want to get into a fighter jet and blast at Mach 1 over the bases... See Flaming Cliff, Black Shark is a load of fun if you are willing to learn.( 6DOF )

Lockon/ Flaming Cliff.. All around fun, not too difficult to master your favorite plane. Best turbulences "effect" of all jet sims, Can be also real fun a Guns only fights, Some annoying Scripted moves like refueling and some in older design jet. SU25T is great , No cockpit clicking but also not really needed unlike Black Shark. Great complement of Black-Shark speed frustration and if you want to carriers landing it's fun and challengeable.

F4. Great Sytem sim not good FM and graphics for now watching for future developpment.( 6DOF )

FSX is great if you know how to tweak and not to go into extreme maneuvers in many planes. ( 6DOF )

As i always say, those are just one or two clicks away in your PC you are not betraying no one by trying others and have fun but you will enrich your experiences.! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

One of the "nostalgia" sims that I have a fond memory of was SWOTL's precursor.. "Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain".

It was worth it just for the manual that had all kinds of historical stuff including a whole bunch of pilots accounts from both sides..

It was the first combat sim that I ever played- and got me hooked.

Anyway to keep from derailing too much:

You can run games like SWOTL and the Aces Series on todays machines if you use a program like "Dosbox". I use Dosbox to play a lot of my old favorites... many you can find for free download from retro gaming sites and the like..

The only "new" sim that I'm giving any real time to currently is FSX. I burned myself out on combat sims a bit with IL2 and LOMAC. I'm having too much fun learning how to fly IFR in FSX that it doesn't matter if I can't blow anything up...

Other ones I miss:

If you really want to get nostalgistic about WWII sims their was "Their Finest Hour" back around 1989 though my big thing back then was F15 Flight Eagle which booted from 5.25" disks.

There was also another WWII sim I played back in the early 90's that featured Spitfires and Tempests raiding nazi occupied France from Tangmere (with lots of "Angels five we have trade for you at .... style comms) but i have totally forgotten what it was called.

Helicopters, schmelicopters, meh, never really interested me. Other "sims" I played in the last decade or so, Red Baron (the first one with Mission Builder), Aces of the Pacific, Aces Over Europe, X-wing, Tiefighter, Wing Commander 1, Wing Commander 2, Wing Commander: Privateer, Wing Commander 3, Wing Commander 4, Wing Commander 5, Aces of the Deep. I also spent LOTS of time with X-com UFO Defense, X-Com: Terror From The Deep, Civilization 1 & 2, Warcraft2, Diablo, Jedi Knight 1 & 2, Medal of Honor (the whole series), Fallout 1 & 2 and some others.

For nostalgia I'll use DosBox to play many old DOS games that I use to have, lost, and have subsequently downloaded to play.

I know that the flight models in WW2OL aren't really great, but the fact that it's all player controlled with very little AI is VERY appealing. That added to the fact that what a teams air force does can have an effect on the whole campaign is really neat. The fact that the air force has to coordinate with the ground forces to take a town and acheive a strategic objective is super cool.

It's just astounding how far technology has come regardless of what we play. I think about the first time I saw Red Baron in 1991 and my jaw dropped at the graphics and realism and compare that to IL2 and it really boggles the mind and makes me excited about what's going to come out in the future.

I_KG100_Prien

RE: WW2OL

A lot of the air combat that happens in WW2OL is ground level furballs, people daisy chain enemy aircraft.. and as there is no friendly fire shoulder shooting happens frequently. I can't count how many times I've seen a BF109 being chased down by 3 or more spits.. each one of them guns blazing.

Plus the "circles" that appear around planes really kills the realism factor. It's a beacon of death that will get you spotted when perhaps you shouldn't be.

The term "Air Quake" gets thrown around quite a bit in the WW2OL community- and for good reason IMO.

I enjoy the game, but will not touch the air aspect with a 10 foot pole.. Perhaps if I had never flown IL2 I could handle it, but since I know what a real flight sim should feel like- despite the "combined arms" aspect.. I just... can't...do it.

I could go on but I won't- don't want to further de rail the topic.

I'll actually fire up Red Baron (the first one that came out in 1991) with DosBox every once in a while, it was the first flight sim I ever played and I became addicted.

I'm this --&gt;&lt;-- close to getting a WW2OL subscription, though... </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The PC version by Dynamix of Red baron came out in 1990.
At least that is what it says in the startup screen.
I still have and play my original version on occasion.
Not as fun as IL-2 but good for a change from time to time for me.
